Staying at The Castle, was an expensive purchase, but it was our 30th Wedding Anniversary, so we…read morewere willing to pay for a quality experience. At first glance, the surroundings are beautiful. Visually The Castle looks incredible. However, on closer inspection, you find little things that are less than satisfactory.
These include:
1. A beautiful sizeable double shower that could only be used by one person. The water pressure was abysmal, and the hot water is not that hot, so we never used the cold.
2. While there was a big enticing spa bath, we only used it once, as due to the water pressure, it took too long to fill. We also had to use straight hot water, which was yellow and had a metallic odour.
3. The dive pool was something I was looking forward to, however, due to COVID-19, the temp could not be increased and was too cold to use. Very disappointing.
4. Carpets looked worn and tired and had a mild red tinge. The grounds had rich red soil, so this was not surprising.
5. While the food was delicious and of high quality, you don't get to order, it is decided for you. The 'surprise' breakfast is not available before 8:00 am. It is a strange system where the hosts knock on your door to see if you are ready for your meal. Then you wait 15 to 30 minutes for your breakfast to arrive. I really struggled with this as I wake at 4 am, and our breakfast usually came around 8:30 am. By that time, I was starving and shaky.
6. With no door on the bathroom, the large window over the spa delivers blinding sun at the crack of dawn, directly into the bedroom. Mind you, I was awake, and it didn't bother me, but I would think others would not be impressed.
7. Workers at some time had cut through the phone cable, so there was no phone to reception.
8. There was no room cleaning during our three-night stay due to COVID-19 restrictions.
9. There are some paths, however, not everywhere. Be prepared to track red soil into your room or car.
We didn't mention any of this to management because there really wasn't anything they could do to fix the main problems--for example, COVID-19 restrictions, and water pressure.
Now for the positives.
1. The food was nice, and we could see they had tried to present it nicely.
2. The bed was comfortable, and I had no problems with it being too hard or soft.
3. Rich, lush gardens that are well kept.
4. The location is good, close to where the hang gliders take off and near to Gallery Walk.
5. Best massage I have ever received. I actually fell asleep as I was so relaxed.
6. Friendly reception staff.
7. It was nice staying in a castle and have one side all to ourselves.
The Castle has a lot of potential. If it wasn't such a special occasion for us, we might not have been so disappointed.
