East India Club - 16 St James's Square

East India Club

Groucho Marx famously asserted that he "didn't want to be part of any club that would accept him as…read morea member." Well, the East India Club is unlikely to accept this working-class boy into its ranks. So how exactly am I meant to feel about it? Signed in by a friend who has membership from his public school days, I instantly felt a bit out of place, sweating slightly thanks to the July heat and my thick funeral/interview/wedding suit-tie combo. But two quite-reasonably-priced drinks in, I'd stopped worrying. Three, and I'd decided that no-one in an ill-fitting double-breasted blazer could intimidate me. Four, and Tarquin was my new best friend. Eton, donchaknow? Smashing chap. Assuming you don't want to spend the whole evening lamenting the country's lack of a strong, Thatcher-esque leader - ironic given The East India Club is mostly off limits to the fairer sex - the restaurant has to be the main attraction. And oh my, the food is exquisite. Once I'd stopped giggling at "gentleman's relish on toast", I finished every last morsel of my generous duck main. And wolfed down a large slab of raspberry tart. The house wines were superb, as was the port. And while it was all pretty far from cheap, the quality well out-stripped the price. So will I be looking to weasel my way into this old boy's club and experience such fine living on a regular basis? Erm, it was nice and all, but no thanks. Besides, I'm too old to grow a floppy haircut and too young to die of gout.

The best bar in London, really friendly atmosphere and great staff. Can't recommend it enough!read more

Don't go! Seriously - it's all mine and I don't want to share it…read more Okay that is a bit extreme but this place is the most magical club in the world and I'm resenting every letter I type here. So here's the deal, I'll write this and you'll appreciate it but never actually set foot it this place..okay? Good! I discovered this club/venue through my far too cool flatmate and we went on Halloween. It was like a huge house party full of your friends in some of the most horrific fancy dress I have ever seen. They have a small stage at the front where local artists perform alongside burlesque dancers for a truly eye opening experience. The place is filled with party people who dress funny even when they aren't in fancy dress and the drinks are cheap enough to get drunk on £20. That is after playing a whooping £10 to get in. Since that night I have been back a few times and every time I do it gets harder to get in. The queues are longer and the door staff ruder, in fact this Halloween we got there and they wouldn't even let us in at all. At 7pm (and I like to say that the normal starting time for things like this is about 11pm) there was over 200 people outside all waiting. We were not one of the lucky ones. So if I have had all of this trouble why so many star? It will still always be an amazing mixture of students, artists and free thinkers out for a good night with like minded people in a historic venue. There is even a Banksy painted on one side of it's wall. I wish more places would be like this so that we could all fit in!

What -is- this place?!…read more A girl was putting on lipstick in the mirror whilst I was using the urinal trough in the gents'. Another girl was in the toilet stall. The seat of the chair I sat on fell through between the legs as I adjusted my bum on it, and the stage was set with a massive light-festooned heart and a fabric vag the size of a sofa. Admittedly, this happened to be on the night of The Vagina Monologues performance and the crowd was teeming with lesbians and feminists, so that might explain the decor. I figure that the booze is typically cheap and that the space is just as grotty for any other event. The beauty of it is that's all it's meant to be - no more and no less. ---- As an aside... how does one punctuate the gents'? Gents? Gent's? Gents'?

Went there at noon but we had to wait 20 mins before the cook would return (he was out for lunch). So we were taking in the atmosphere, noticed the grime on the table (probably hasn't been wiped in a long time. We ordered a Chilli Dog, Tots with Beer Sauce and a Veggie Dog. We had to ask the waitress three times until we got napkins, ketchup and cutlery for the tots that were starting to dissolve in the beer sauce. In the middle of our meal I noticed things moving on the walls. A family of cockroaches coming out from behind the booth. WTF?! It made our skin crawl to sit in that cesspool, so we quickly ate up (while closely expecting every bite). Had to pay 23 quid for it, which is IMO unjustifiably high for fast food. As I was paying I informed the waitress of the infestation problem, and she just brushed it off as a constant issue. No apology whatsoever. Disgusting place.

Monday's they have just started to do an event based around guest speakers and showcasing hip hop music videos; choosing their favourites and showing them why. So though it's not a place is typically hang out because of the crowded small space, the hip hop vibe it clearly favours is something I feel is always missing with London and I embrace when I find.

Loveliest in the sun, because of the gorgeous garden; its equally fun on a winter night, round the log fire, playing snooker or listening to jazz. Members can - indeed are encouraged - to have exhibitions here. Lunch is either al fresco on the patio,or in the bar - cheap but very delicious - or fine dining in the very elegant dining rooms. All rooms lined with paintings by members past & present. There are regular events : the Artist's lunches : (3 courses with a lecture at £9) concerts, classical & jazz, theatrical performances, exhibitions, visits to studios etc etc. (look at the website for details) Metered Parking is possible outside. Buses 14 0r 19 & South Kensington tube. I love going to the V&A & then walking to the Club for lunch or supper Esp when Eton Mess is on the menu! NB : Cameras & mobiles absolutely forbidden!

Chelsea Art's Club, Chelsea - I would not have known that this place existed if it was not…read morementioned to me. And even if it was recommended, I would not have been allowed into the place without the company of a member. Chelsea Art's Club is in the heart of Chelsea, established in 1891. The building is not a flashy one, except when there is an art exhibition on, the front of the building is in its artistic form; bright and colourful. When I was there, it was just a humble whitewashed establishment. I would have walked past it without knowing that it is actually a club. It has a plaque outside of the entrance door, again, nothing fancy, next to a small door which means someone taller might have to bow down to enter the place. Situated off the busy King's Road, I was truly surprised at the little bustling interior this place has to offer. Chelsea Art's Club is very popular as an arty hangout and membership is strictly only by nomination and invitation. The Chelsea Art's Club also offers accommodation for their members. The entrance looks a little poky, narrow and small but enter the dining area, here, it is spacious. The glassed ceiling and windows lightens the place and gives a sense of space. A large snooker table in the middle which also functions as a newspaper/magazine stand. The downside for me is that smoking is allowed in the interior of the place. The split level balcony makes more dining space. The place is furnished with reading sofas, coffee height tables and chairs, all the furniture is different in style. A little worn but in good taste. It is the main social room of the Chelsea Art's Club. Also situated on the ground floor is a smaller reading room and a separate more formal dining area. At Chelsea Art's Club, the bar menu is a very simple menu with choices similar to brunch and a light lunch, sandwiches, salads, pub style. Drinks prices were very reasonable starting from GBP 12.00 per bottle for their house wine. thai green chicken curry with rice GBP 8.50 boiled ham with dauphinoise potato GBP 8.50 - the ham, while plentiful, was nothing special, but the potatoes were rich and delicious, altogether a hearty dish. smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and toast GBP 8.50 - the scrambled eggs were done perfectly, lightly runny and really buttery! goat's cheese sandwich steamed treacle pudding GBP 4.50 - the pudding was moist and light with the treacle sauce which is adequately sweetened too my taste (ie. not sickly sweet). Very good. Generous portion too. apple and berry crumble GBP 4.50 - sweet and sour of the fruit but the crumble was not properly cooked. Self-service. If you are lucky to be one of the ones to have access to this place, please invite me again :). It is indeed a very comfortable, friendly and sociable place to be spend a cold rainy afternoon. Ok, food is not at its best but the place makes up hugely for it.

Covent Garden

The Hospital Club is a very special place for all those involved in the entertainment business…read more(like Mrs. G who has written a new musical opening in London summer 2020, and a screenplay in the final stages of a minor rewrite). So there are musicians, plus theatre and cinema types all around - but sometimes this is only apparent from overheard conversations etc. The club spreads over 6 or 7 floors, cool décor, a nice restaurant, a few bars and lounges to relax, write, chat or meet. There are also several bedrooms that can be taken by the night - of course it is in an excellent location for the West End, Covent Garden and more. There is convenient garage parking just around the corner in case you are foolhardy enough to drive a car into London (only at the weekends!!!!) There is a twin club that has recently opened in Los Angeles (which we have yet to visit). In order to enter the club you need to be a member or be invited. It is difficult for us to justify the (pricey) monthly membership fee since we live some 2 hours outside of London and so would likely only 1 or 2 times a month - we would LOVE to....but ... $$$ We have been twice - once to have a meeting and lunch with an agent and once for a small party. Both times we really enjoyed it, the whole experience, ambience, food and drinks. Two thumbs up Review #110 2019

Oh boy, oh boy... it's story time with Laura N!…read more Upon coming back from the gym at lunch, I turned onto Endell Street only to see a massive congregation of paparazzi buzzing outside of the Hospital Club. Frustrated as all get out (read: giddy and excited to see what all the hot mess was about), I went inside only to find... standing oh so casually in the lobby... Chris Martin of Coldplay. Turns out he was there with a bevy of stars putting on a Telethon to raise money for Haiti Earthquake relief. Cool enough, right? Well I thought so. It ticked my "celeb-spotting" box as well as my "good-story" box for at least the next month or so. After a full afternoon of work, my excitement turned from celeb-obsessed to food-and-wine-obsessed. (Hey, a girl's gotta have priorities, right?) And by 6:45pm, I was finally ready to call it quits. As per usual, I popped in my iPod, hopped on the elevator on the 4th floor and waited for the painfully long ride back down. Wouldn't you know it, the dang elevator stopped on the 3rd Floor. I mean, as if that ride isn't long enough already... add the fact that it's nearing 7pm on a Friday night and I'm about an hour late on my wine alarm. Blast. It was a large group of people, and as the first girl walked in, she casually said "Hey, how ya doin'?" in a beautifully familiar accent. I looked up, pleased to be in the company of one of my fellow compatriots, and was in the midst of returning the "hi" favor -- as any good, optimistic, and painfully eager American will always do, when I realized just who I was hello-ing... In what will not be remembered as one of my most tactful moments, my "hello" came out a bit like this: Hiiiiii -- Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyonce ... ? That's right. I'm in a packed elevator, literally pressed up against Beyonce. (She was pressed up against me, to be fair.) It was a Beyonce and elevator wall sandwich, and I was the filling. And can I just say... I don't think you're ready for this jelly. -------------- Dear Hospital Club, I would like to formally apologize for EVER complaining about the slow speed of your elevators. In fact, I would recommend, for safety of course, that you consider easing up a tad bit...
