He gladly answered all my questions and gave me his number if I had any problems. He even charged me less than the $50 minimum since the tattoo was so small. They are significantly less creepy than most of the other shops in town...but that doesn't make them stellar. Yes, they are clean. Yes, their prices are fair. If that's all you need in a tattoo parlor, stop reading Yelp and go call them. I, however, need a little bit more. Like, say, decent art and artists who aren't stoned when they work. My lady has a permanent reminder of a tattoo artist who didn't follow directions and was so stoned that he told us his personal theology (in a nutshell: the Virgin of Guadalupe is actually a vaginal conduit between the spirit world and our world) about eight times. Unprompted. Oh, right, and the old guy who does piercings? He's a total creeper. He asked to see my body piercings no less than four times even though I was just buying a labret stud. But this update is to acknowledge that in the nearly 6 years since I posted my initial review, the owner (Don D) has spent more time commenting on my review asking me to take it down than he has in actually creating happy customers. The best way to counter a negative review like mine is to make changes in your shop (better lighting, better quality jewelry, cleaner shop, sober artists, no smoking, etc, etc, etc) then actually have happy customers who want to share their opinions on Yelp. Otherwise, the folks who had a negative experience will be your voice in the world. And my experience of Legacy Tattoo? Still negative.

I just finished a full sleeve project with Joe DeJoya, and the whole experience was great. I got to a point where I was looking forward to not only getting the tattoo work done, but also to hanging out at the shop. Joe was amazing. The sleeve turned out better than I had dared imagine. We did a traditional Japanese dragon and had a challenging previous tattoo to cover, and the result is stunning. Over a 7 month period, Joe transformed my left arm into a piece of beautiful art. I am so proud to wear the result every day, and I look forward to planning the right arm with him. When we finished, it was actually kind of bittersweet. It felt great to be done, but I will miss spending regular time there watching the piece develop. I have found the perfect place to continue this journey, and I feel that there is an artist at Damascus who is a great fit for every style, and the environment there is one that really communicates how well the staff supports each other. They seem to genuinely act as a family. The way they check out each others work, the way they collaborate, the banter throughout the day, the sense of community at lunch - not only are the artists amazing at what they do, they do it in an environment that is a real pleasure to be in.
