Looking to kill some time, we stopped at Cauley Square Shops. Did not know what to expect of this small village, but made our way through the shops and walked around the area.
Quality
Cauley Square Shops bills itself as a historic railroad village that has shops, restaurants, and functions as a wedding venue. I don't understand the appeal at all. Of the twelve or so shops, only six were open. The most interesting of them was a bird store that was filled with exotic species. However, the rest were craft shops, which would be better labeled as a mix of junk that would not even stand out at a flea market. The buildings are old, many having been around for decades and that is their charm, but I personally do not like it when the whole shop shakes with every step. They had three or four food spots, the tea room being the most intriguing, but none of the menus seemed tempting. I also felt like the grounds were poorly maintained and almost a joke. The bridge garden and the sled leading to the largest laughs.
Quantity
It took us about an hour to walk the grounds and to visit the five or six shops that were actually open. It is a surprisingly large area, but there is just not a lot to see.
Value
There is no charge to visit the area and I had no problem not spending any money here.
Ambiance
Cauley Square Shops is located near the Homestead area in Goulds. Over a hundred years ago the area was a railroad stop that helped ship items from nearby farms up the coast. Now the remaining buildings are filled with eclectic shops for birds, crafts, art, and healing as well as a few restaurants. The main purpose of the area though appears to be for hosting events such as weddings. While I do see some elements of charm, I feel like the whole place needs work. Overgrown plants and weeds, massive puddles, fallen limbs, and piles of garbage decorate the area that is supposed to be picturesque. Bugs swarm almost everywhere you go and I left with a few bites. I also couldn't help but laugh listening to music over the speakers that was constantly interrupted by text messages. Someone had just plugged their phone into the speakers.
Crowd
When we arrived we saw a good deal of cars parked on the road. However, I do not know where the people were. The place was practically deserted, with the only exceptions being the bird store and the tea room. We only passed two or three other people during our walk around the property who were not staff.
Service
The shop owners were very friendly, but I don't think they have much of a choice when peddling extremely expensive craft goods. I also saw some groundskeepers who were power washing a walkway. I think they may need some additional help because the property is in very rough shape, or perhaps that is what it is supposed to look like.
Parking
We followed the lead of the other cars and just parked on the side of the road. I did not see any signs and we did not have any issues. There was a small lot towards the center of the property, but it appeared designated just for guests of the restaurant.
Extra
I believe Cauley Square Shops has the potential to be a place for a nice family friendly afternoon. However, it requires some maintenance, more intriguing stores, and community events. I do not see myself returning unless I decide I want a colorful bird in my life. read more
