Cath Cobb Woodlands only seems to be well known by locals in St Mellons, where this green area is located - but it's a spot that's filled with wildlife and is a nice place for a stroll if you've already visited most of Cardiff's other many parks.
It's fairly easy to find, located right next to the area's main shops, and it's well used by locals but few other people really seem to know about it.
This is what the whole area around Old St Mellons would have been like before it the new part was developed, and new estates built. It's mainly made up of ancient ash and oak trees, and is known for its healthy populations of resident bats, birds and butterflies.
The woodlands are the wildest and most interesting part of Cath Cobb Woods, but there are also recreation grounds for sports, and a bowling green - although for me this end is far less appealing.
If you're driving over, you can park in the car park for the recreation ground on Brockhampton Road and walk through to the wooded area. read more
