Zoom zoom partystarter. This was way fun! My husband and I did the 45-minute "Casino Tour" which takes you from the miniature golf parking lot on Sumner Ave to the famed casino along the bay. It was super scenic, and our guide Joe was very informative. He was patient when we first started (we were segway newbies), and gave us helpful instruction. He was also very willing to help us take fun pictures! They have a variety of more extensive (and expensive) tours. I wish we had more time to spend on the segway! It was a blast. What I didn't like was how Joe kept answering his cell phone while we were on the tour to schedule tours with his clients, and at one point this resulted in us "standing" around for nearly 15 minutes (which ended up extending our tour time, since he didn't count his cell phone time as part of our tour). When you are stuck on a tiny island with 5 hours to kill you'll find you're willing to do things you told yourself you would never do! I never understood why people use Segways. I mean, how lazy can we Americans get? Now we can't even be bothered to pedal on a bike or drag our legs on a skateboard or scooter? Our sedentary lives aren't enough? Now we need to STAND STILL on a motorized mechanism to get ourselves from point A to point B? All this being said, I did see that movie with Kevin James where he plays Paul Blart the Mall Cop (don't judge me it was a free movie on a flight). He had some pretty nifty moves on that segway of his so in the spirit of Paul Blart and needing to kill some time we decided to rent segways. Since it was our first time, we opted for the 1 hour package to the casino and back. I believe it was around $42 for the hour? The employees were very friendly and spent time with each of us teaching us how to operate the segway in a safe gated area. I have to say this was the funnest part of our experience. Each of struggled for a couple minutes before we figured out the machine. I think it took me the longest to figure things out. It took me a hot minute to figure out how to stop. I almost drove into a tree but seriously the instructor is so on top of it he doesn't let anything bad happen to you. He stopped me right in time. They took all the necessary safety precautions and once we all gained confidence in how to operate the segways, we were off! I felt safe with the employee leading us through the streets and down the paths. On our way back I realized that even though we looked like complete dorks, it was a great way to zip around and cover more ground. Would I use a segway ever again? Probably not.... I'd rather do Stand up Paddle boarding and use more of my core, paddle and have the added adrenaline of potentially falling into the water. Am I glad I did it? I sure am! read more

Segways can look ridiculous, but they are so much fun to ride!! This tour was my favorite part of our visit to Catalina. I would highly suggest the Hogback tour, which takes you up hills and mountains for a REAL adventure rather than taking a tour on ground level. And, the best part is that you aren't being gawked at by tourists on the streets--you have a private tour and can take in the beautiful sights from up above. I want to try the "Offroad Adventure" tour next. My boyfriend and I had such a great time. The tour was supposed to be 1.5 hours, but because it was a huge learning curve for me it took 2.5 hours. I really didn't think I'd make it alive the first few minutes, but Joe assured me with confidence that I'd be a pro --and I was! Joe was really patient and did not give up on me! If I can learn---anyone can learn. He also has a really cool personality and cracked jokes in between the history lessons of our tour. Neat guy. If you ever go to Catalina, please check this place out! Highly recommended if you are up for trying new things. read more

CATALINA SAGWAYS was a real "HOOT". A real Senior Citizens Adventure! It so happened that on our Sagway tour all in attendance (four) happened to be in the 65-70 year old age group. No one in the group had ever ridden a Sagway prior. so, the pressure was on for our instructor and tour guide. Well, CATALINA SAGWAYS did a fantastic job and with about three minutes of training per senior adult, we were all riding with confidence and were ready for the hour ride. When the Sagway tour was over, it was unanimous that everyone was smiling from ear to ear. "ONE MORE BUCKET LIST ITEM SCRATCHED OFF!" So when it comes to novice training, safety and a fun hour, you must rate CATALINA SAGWAYS a perfect 5 star. . . . Currently the short excursion on the Sagway is priced at $42.00 per person. It's a very easy ride along the board walk to the casino and back. Is this tour exciting? No it's not, but for a novice on their first ride, it's perfect. We booked the "Off Road XT Segway Adventure". We arrived early, so we did the safety talk with the "city tour". Joe, our guide, fired up our XT Off Road Segway's were awesome. Very clean and had pouches to carry all our stuff (purse, water, sunscreen.) We put on our helmets (safety first) and tested our skills in the parking lot. Then we headed out onto the streets. We headed toward the Catalina Golf Course, where our off road trails began. We traveled up the old horse trail. We ran across several runners on the trail, but otherwise we had it all to ourselves. We saw Catalina Quail, Joe explained that they are unique to Catalina, as are many other animals. He was knowledgeable about plants, animals & landmarks of Catalina. After we were done going up and then down the hills and trails, my husband and I headed for a snack and some beverages at the taco place. As we sat there looking out at the harbor, my husband said that this trip was the coolest thing he's done in a long time. This is so much fun. I was very nervous initially since I had never ridden a segway before. They give you some training before leaving and they make sure you're comfortable before starting on the tour. We did the hour and a half Hogback tour. I believe our guides name was Chris, and he was entertaining and helpful. The tour goes in a big loop up the hill and then back down. I wish the speed was set a little faster. They start at 6 mph then midway allow you to go 14mph. I would give this 5 stars if it wasn't for the price. Although very fun, I feel like $180 is too much. Granted everything is expensive on the island, but this is highway robbery. read more

This is our second time visiting Catalina Island on a Carnival Cruise ship. The first time was awesome, but this second time was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! If,we could give more than. 5 stars we would. Chris was our tour guide and he took great care of us, especially with one of our riders that never been on segways. We took the Hogsback tour and saw a different side of Avalon. Not boring at all. Soooo much fun. If we ever have the opportunity to come back, we'll be going to Catalina Segways, asking for Chris. THIS IS A MUST DO TOUR. I have toured a number of cities on Segways and generally find this a great and enjoyable way to see new places. In Avalon, they are required to limit the speeds of the Segways, so the riding is less fun. But much worse, I took a supposed 90-minute tour with this company. Their guide was a few minutes late and then ended the tour a full 20 minutes early. Given the cost of these rides, it felt quite inappropriate of the tour company, Catalina Segways. Note: they are booked under other tour company names, but I believe this is the only Segway tour company in Avalon. I strongly recommend not doing business with them and renting a golf cart instead. The golf carts are cheaper especially for multiple people, you can go wherever you want, they travel faster, and they're more fun. read more

We were there over the Fourth of July weekend, after reading some of the past reviews, we were a bit skeptical about the Segways, because of the review from John P. But we took our chances anyways and went with the hogback tour. We were very impressed with our guide Chris, he kept an eye on our safety, and filled our heads with nothing but knowledge of the Island.... As a response to the John P review, h couldn't be more wrong, if you read the description, tour times were very accurate, (with our training and ride, we were exactly 90 minutes, the comment about the speeds, well put it this way, the speed limit in that little town of Avalon is posted 10mph, with the segways doing 6 to 14mph, what more do you need??? At any rate I would go back and ride again read more

We planned a birthday trip to Catalina just for the Segway tour and their birthday discount--about $120 in ferry fees plus another $150 to make a wonderful day. We called a month ahead of time to reserve and asked for the best day possible--they suggested Monday. While on the ferry dock, we received a call that a cruise ship arrived and they rented out all the Segways. My wife's birthday present was ruined by these selfish folks who preferred to rent to paying customers rather than honor their advertised birthday discount. Of course, if we had not showed up, we would have been charged a penalty, but it does not work the other way around, does it? I'm speechless that a business would pull this on a person's birthday after 3 hours of ferry roundtrip ferry travel. Shame on you, Cataline Segways. read more

This business posted a birthday special. When trying to sign on for the special, it was explained to me that the business recently sold, and the new owners were not aware of the special, and the previous owner could not in good faith commit them to honor it. However, because I was asking in person, the previous owner paid for my extra tour himself. Great service from these guys. Don't be put off. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We have enjoyed touring on Segways in other cities, but left unsatisfied at the end of this Avalon tour. We arrived at noon--along with 6 other riders--for a widely advertised 90-minute tour at a price of nearly $80 per person. We paid, signed waivers, and then waited in line to receive a helmet, a Segway, and operating and safety instructions. The tour started 40 minutes later (12:40pm) along the specified course and ended about 1:40pm,effectively a 60-minute tour, not 90-minutes, as advertised. (Note, the next tour group started at 2pm, so the guide had to be back at the corral.) Lesson learned: Ensure you get your full 90-minutes. So while we covered the specified route, we felt cheated out of 30-minutes. We reasoned that value is measured more by the time on Segways, rather than by a specified route covered, that's why many people chose to ride Segways; otherwise, we could have covered the same route on a golf cart. read more
