I came in with my own felt hat, planning to add some ribbons and feathers. The shop down the street was closed, so I decided to try this place instead. When my friend and I walked in, no one greeted us or offered help. Eventually, someone led me to the back to look for ribbons, but they just stood there watching while I sorted through bins myself. I settled for a simple white ribbon since nothing else stood out. It then took about 15-20 minutes just to sew that single ribbon on. Then after feeling disappointed with the service, I decided to check out. At checkout, I was charged a whopping $20 for a single plain ribbon?? Definitely won't be coming back, and neither should anybody else. read more

They make some darn fine hats here, and the staff will help you get the right size and shape of hat. If you try to do something like cut the brim down to 2 inches, they'll tactfully and gently dissuade you for your own good, though in the spirit of customer service, I suspect they will cut it for you if you insist. Their house made hats are great quality and look great. I'm not a real cowboy so I couldn't tell you if they'll stand up to the rigors of every day cowboying, but I've been wearing their felt hats outdoors in the winter day in day out and they've held up for years. The machinery to make hats isn't really made anymore, but by gum they keep them running. I once took a beaten Akubra to them for a cleaning and new liner too. They did a great job fixing it up. The "steam bar" is in the middle of the store and is a great place to shoot the breeze with the gent shaping your hat and other patrons, including real ranchers who are giving these hats hard wear and seem happy, so there's my second hand info on if their hats are sturdy. Please remember to tip the gent steaming your hat, he'll take good care of you regardless. All in all, a great shop with great service and great quality, the kind of place that makes you proud to be an American. read more

Good luck trying to get an exchange on something. Even when they don't explain the policies and their signs do not either. Signs say all sales final but will do exchanged and in store credit. But they don't. Won't be going back here for poor customer service. read more

I've been coming here for yrs and not sure why I never did I a yelp review but here it is. I bought my first "quality" hat here. An American straw. Since then I've bought two felts and two additional straws. All felts are hand made on location and shaped to your liking. Straws are all name brands, pre-shaped or un-shaped. Felts from 10x - 500x. Straws of all qualities. If you normally shop at chain western wear stores for hats, then you've got to try Catalena's. Prices are comparable to the chain on equal quality hats. And it's custom fit So two weeks ago I got my newest, stepped up to a 20x in medium grey, I think. They had to make it as my size was out of stock. After an hour of shaping, the fit is perfect. Very unfortunate that when someone goes in for the first time and purchases multiple hats spending hundreds. The staff wasn't even very friendly. When we left we my husband said have a great day. The lady rudely said what did you say? He again said have a great day and she just looked away. And you explain to the shaper it's gifts for multiple people (mind you this is the first time we have ever went into a hat store like this) he shaped them before we paid for them. Well one of the hats didn't fit, so I called about exchanging because their sign says "all sales final" understood we did not want to return. We wanted to exchange as the same sign says exchanges and in store credit only. I was told "there's nothing we can do for you" the refuse to do an exchange when their process was never explained to us. Lack of communication and their signs are not honored. Was looking forward to doing more business there until all this. Had this been explained this could have been avoided. read more

I've been wanting to get up here for sometime to replace a long lost favorite hat of mine. I've heard so many good things about Catalena Hatters! When my wife and I entered the store we were promptly greeted by Angel who asked if there was anything he could help us find. I've been wanting a good summer straw hat that breathes good for the Texas Summer!!! After looking at several different hats I picked out an American Hat company model with plenty of venting in the crown for letting that Texas heat out! We walked out over to the shaping counter where Travis put his magic touch on it! I didn't have a standard request for a shape either! I picked out a Hat with a 5"inch brim, but you can get them in 4", 4 1/2", and like mine 5"! I asked Travis if he remembered the old PRA "Bull Rider" shape from the 70's? He said he thought he did and described the basic shape. I told him that sounded right and he went with it! When he got through I was very impressed by what he remembered, he nailed it!!!! Outs been a long time since I've seen a good hat shaper in action, but Travis is very good at what he does!!! If you've been thinking about getting a new Lid for your noggin you need to make the trek to Bryan, Texas and let the nice people at Catalena fix you up!!! They also have felt hats by American Hat Company and Resistol. They have other unique items in the shop as well like leather goods, shirts, caps, and cowhide type purses, hat bands. Never take your hat here for cleaning ! ! They will take a 100x Resistol and gut it out and label it with their own band and liner. This should be illegal . How can this even be allowed? I will be contacting Resistol and Stetson headquarters to inform them that Catalena took my dad's excellent 100x Resistol in for cleaning and gave us back a gutted out Resistol with Catalena logo all over it ....so, so sad. My father was devastated and all Catalena employees could say was we did a full restoration. Which we did not request .. My response was Catalena will never Ever be as good as Resistol ! So don't put your logo on something you did not build ! Last time I checked, Restoration means restoring back to original condition. I had a buddy who cooked for trail rides each March and he recommended Catalena Hatters when I told him I was in the market. Said a lot of folks on the Saltgrass Trail ride had their hats made there. I live in Houston, but was not deterred by the 1-1/2 hour drive. Found the shop, went in and told them what I wanted, they sized my head, and said they'd contact me when it was ready. Several weeks later, I got the call to come pick it up - I put it on my head, and it fit like a glove from that moment. All they needed to do was steam the crease I wanted, and I wore it home.
