This tower, called a castle, is currently just a site for picture-taking. The building was claimed under municipal ownership in 2001, but funds have not yet been raised to complete plans for a rehab in order to make this a tour-able property. There is currently a fence around it, and no public means of climbing up the hill to access it. It's simply a scenic piece of architecture, for now.
Though created in Italian Renaissance style, the current Castle of Santa Catalina is actually a 20thC construction. It was built from 1929-1933, as a tower to house a light for maritime traffic signaling. It was constructed on the site of a prior hermitage by the same name, although many structures have existed here though the centuries. The hill it stands on, as well, is named Santa Catalina.
The position of this "castle" has always been geographically strategic, and thus, historically used, off and on, for military purposes, throughout the centuries. read more
