One of the great things about Portugal is that there are still so many places to go that are inexpensive and not overrun by tourists. Chaves is one of these towns and we ended up choosing our hotel spontaneously.
My fiancé did the booking as they offer spa services as this is something we had talked about enjoying on our trip. While it ended up being too late to enjoy a massage, we did get to use the spa which consisted of good size hot tub (many massage jets), a small yet warm pool that had two water spouts that you could sit under to get an amazing upper shoulder beat down, along with a sauna and a steam room. As we walked in, another couple were leaving and we had everything to ourselves.
It was fantastic.
The hotel was modern, elegant, and extremely quiet, even though our room was eye level to a small street. It sat at the base of the of fort and tower that overlooks the town and river, Rio Tâmega, which flows into the Douro and then eventually past Porto and into the Atlantic.
Our stay, which was on a Sunday was 74€ and also included a breakfast. Out of our 11 days of travel, we stayed at some great places, but this is the one I'm writing about.
The location was great as it was located in the old town section. We were in easy walking distance of many things, including the Roman bridge that spans the Rio Tâmega.
After experiencing my trip, I could easily see using this place as a base to check out other parts of the Galecia that encompasses both Spain and Portugal in this area (it is about 10km south of the Spanish border).
You are also close to nature areas, other smaller and more remote towns along with being near many vineyards. In this location, you are just north of the region where most Port wine is grown.
Definitely worth checking out, no matter how old this review becomes. read more
