This Castle here is very easy accessible from the town. You could drive and park on top. But it's nice to take the quick walk up here. The stairs might be steep for some, but it's really a 10min walk only. Castello di Montebello is a 13th-century fortress built by the Rusca family. Perched 90 meters above the city, it was expanded by Milanese rulers to secure vital Alpine trade routes. The complex features heavy 15th-century fortifications, including a deep defensive moat and distinct round outer towers. In 2000, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the city's other two medieval castles. Today, it hosts an Archaeological Museum showcasing ancient regional artifacts and offering sweeping valley views. Even though we didn't go inside (there's a fee), the views from outside are rewarding enough. What's even more rewarding are the views over the town and especially the Castelgrande! There's plenty of space around the castle to walk, to take pics. To take a picnic. It makes some nice pics here with the ancient walls around. Even if you have only little time in town, it's a quick walk up you shouldn't miss. Just take a left after you pass the church in the heart of the town and head up. And don't miss out on the Castelgrande of course. There's an elevator going up there just in case.

The walls of Castlegrande…read moreconnect to Montebello, and it is quite impressive to see the three castles standing strong together (although the third castle is not connected by the walls of the other two). Unlike the Castelgrande, Montebello was not protected by natural features. It is surrounded by deep moats that protected the walls. The castle is a bit smaller than Castlegrande. There is a museum here, but the Sunday we went it was closed, but, the grounds and castle walls free to explore. It was fun to explore and climb around the castle. As it is smaller, it is not quiet as breathtaking as Castlegrande. But, still fun to see. The inner keep dates back to before 1313.

Entrance fee was small (about 8CHF). But wow, what a view! And the flowers! Heavenly. The smell of Jasmine was everywhere. Loved the flowers from around the globe, the Roman "bath" and the Bamboo garden. Very easy to spend an entire day here. A must visit, especially if you like nature, flowers, spectacular views, and the outdoors.

Riding the funicular is like taking a step back in time, with wooden seats and paneling. The ride takes you up the hillside in about 5 minutes, giving a great view down over Locarno, and a couple of stops on the way up. Then the cable car awaits...

So much luxury shopping it's incredible, and some amazing restaurants too! This shert magnitude of the architecture & history is awe inspiring. A great place to come and feel energized... but also a little overwhelming with so many people! I love sitting in one of their indoor cafés and people watching, just adore being here! The beauty of the floors, walls, ceilings, is truly magnificent. The up keep by the Italians is a marvel. Bravo to them from maintaining such an amazing cultural landmark! The sweeping glass ceilings alone will make you swoon!

Luxury high end shopping bonanza is how I would describe the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II. There…read moreare so many luxury brands here from Louis Vuitton, fendi, Gucci and of course Prada. It's a fashionista's playground and also a window shopper's potential maxed out credit card. Architecture here is absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing. Look for the Lucky Bull mosaic throughout the marble floors. It's actually a few feet away from Dior. What you do is place your right heel on the bull's testicals and spin around three times for good luck. I'm not certain that it would bring good luck, but it's worth a shot. Plus it's funny watching others do it whilst trying to keep their balance. I did it a few times and I couldn't stop laughing.

Plenty of Gelaterias for the ice cream addicts like myself. All though, it's a little hard to tell where one Palazzo ends and the other one starts, it's all one beautiful village.

It reminds me of the Catalan Romanesque, so maybe I'm not being impartial. Only the exterior walls and the church tower remain erected, and some of the interior structure can be guessed. The area, which is very well looked after, is reached after a 10 minute walk from the parking lot by the road, past the Santa Maria church. When I was there last summer, I was the only person around, so I guess it's not very well known or the location is not very convenient for a spontaneous visit if you are not nearby and happen to have some time to spend. I also found a pagoda-like structure, but I couldn't find out what it was for, maybe they celebrate events in there.

It's very beautiful and spectacular both outside and inside, and it's the most impressive church in this area. I'd certainly recommend visiting here.
