Each time we were transferred to the Infectious Disease Department from the switchboard and had to leave voicemail. They never even called back! And they either did not call back my immunologist, or said they can't help me. Not sure which until I go in for my March 21 appt and talk to the doctor. I lost my infectious disease physician in 2014 when he retired. At the time of his retirement I had I not seen him in 6-months because my treatments were working and I was fairly well. My husband and I were on the road alot(doc called us his "nomads" because we traveled extensively in the US) and when I called to schedule a follow-up appt my doctor was gone. I spent the next year trying to find a replacement between trips. Then last year I got sick, infection after Infection, in the ER for pneumonia, nasty sinus infection, UTI, etc. I've had two separate oral surgeries to remove multiple teeth due to abcess. My rheumatologist gave me the name of an immunologist and I had to wait nearly 2 months for an appointment.. while waiting I got sicker. The sinus infection migrated to tooth roots, eye infection resulting in ulceration around my cornea, and an abscess on my lower jaw. My esophagus became inflamed due to 3 months of Augmentin, and I had to have an emergency endoscopy to remove food that I tried to eat before it became stuck halfway to my stomach. But EVMS - called the immune deficiency center in the previous review won't set an appointment for me.... So my rheumatologist is seeking another Infectious Disease specialist for me. A doctor or clinic that won't see you is as bad as one that doesn't exist.

Dr. Daniel Spencer will not communicating with you or your child the diagnosis he makes. Those diagnosis are put into the electronic chart system and show up to any CHKd provider (pediatrician, specialist, after hours location) and you still do not know. My daughter was diagnosed as a hypochondriac by Dr. Spencer over the first meeting they had which was on Zoom. My daughter was accurately describing what was found to be an extremely rare disease. Dr. Spencer was formally asked to retract the diagnosis based on him not observing the DSM-5 recommendation of seeing a patient for 6 months before diagnosing them as a hypochondriac and that he made the determination while asking her to give him he medical history. Dr. Spencer refused. My daughter is so visibly ill with this rare disease that other medical systems have taken off the diagnoses Dr. Spencer gave her - without being asked. What Dr. Spencer did is so egregious that it makes him look bad. It turns out she is actually that sick. Dr. Spencer is horrible for patients with rare diseases.

I called the next day and requested a new doctor, Restaino, and he LISTENED. He agreed with my concerns, got me all the appointments I needed and we worked out a plan. My son's surgery was scheduled once he gained up to 16 lbs. Had I stayed with Flatin who knows when my son would have been treated. The way she laughed at me and making that smart remark really disrespected me as a human and a first time mother.
