Here's a little tip for you lefty Guardian readers of liberal middle-class Edinburgh (don't worry,…read moreI'm one of you too). The Grauniad is a mere 40p in the shop down here. Sure it was 20p when I started uni, but it's still 60p cheaper than in a normal shop. And anyone can walk in here! But don't tell too many people. And I guess it's supposed to be for students. They also sell snacks, stationary and the like and none of it is too expensive. And stacks and stacks of envelopes. I've never seen so many envelopes. If it's envelopes you want... I often felt EUSA become a little exploitative in my last couple of years at uni, trying to make massive profits when they should really be breaking even and keeping it cheap. The basement seems to be about the only place that missed the price hike.

Tucked away next to the copying centre, and across from Cafe Senses, this gem of shop is a lifeline for students. If you are ever in need of stationary, snacks, sandwiches, drinks, newspapers or even a birthday card then this shop does not disappoint! I only found this shop during my second year and I still constantly go back to it for its convenience. The staff have been there for years now, and they are very friendly and chatty and make this shop stand out! Also, they are very knowledgeable about the campus, so if you're a new student, they won't mind giving you directions or hints about student life in George Square. So if you think you have to keep on walking up to Potterrow every time you need a sandwich or some pens, then think again as this little shop will save you the hassle!

This particular branch of Barnardos is dedicated to books and as such has an amazing selection. On…read moresunny days there are usually boxes of books displayed outside to entice bookworms in and it certainly did the job for me. Unlike other charity shop, this one if very well categorised and organised and it makes it easy to browse for the type of books that you're into. I spotted a few German books which I was seriously considering buying so I can brush up on my grammar but that's just nowhere near as fun as the cookery books that I spied. There were tonnes of cookery books from quick meals, elaborate gourmet dining recipes, cake recipes and many more mouth watering recipes on offer. Prices are very reasonable considering what many of the books would have cost brand new and most of them are in excellent condition, plus it's for a great cause.

A real gem of a charity shop, you could easily spend a good hour and a great deal of money in there!

The shop has an icy look about it, with just the glass cabinets holding the jewellery as you come in, and a kind of gray/blue, futuristic look surrounding everything. Minimalist I would say, in a good way, as it makes the jewellery the only focus because you're not peering about getting distracted by fancy interiors. Or maybe that's just me, my attention span is admittedly very short. The smiley lady helping me out with my browsing informed me that the shop stocks a lot of Greek silver designers, and there are certainly a lot of beautiful silver pieces. I thought the earrings and rings were particularly attractive. The simple combination of pearl and what looked like twisted silver in the rings, as well as the angular Coeur de Lion earrings in different colours, were very pleasing to my eyes. A good price range too, in the sense that you can come in and make a casual purchase if you see something you fancy, or go that bit higher in price if you're hunting for special occasion items.

I think it's location perhaps gives it a little more prestige that it's deserves. It's very shiny and dark, and the interior is cold and unwelcoming. There was a couple of things in there for a fiver but then again these were few and far between. For what you could get anywhere else for £50, they were charging £300 for something I knew was worth 1/6 price.

It does a lot with it's small space though, with a hell of a lot of stock to spend some time browsing through. If you're on a budget go to the back of the shop, where there is a bargain basement section. When I was there they had a special 50p for everything deal, but normally I think prices are pretty decent. I didn't have a big look through here, but this looked like the usual shelf-fillers you get in most second hand stores - the greatest hits of Bread in about half dozen different front covers, and lots of 70's and 80's stuff. The key thing here is that everything is all fairly priced, so it's cheap enough to take a punt on. The main space is set up for new records, and quality second hand stuff. I couldn't see a huge new releases section (I couldn't see a section for stuff out that week, for example), but there was good selection of newer releases, and a solid local offering. There were boxes upon boxes in this area, and i don't know what the deal is with opening up the ones at the bottom - a wee bit more space may actually be a help if it means they can get more stock up and visible. Finally, a sale selection had some genuine bargains - in fact, the prices were pretty fair throughout the whole shop. Special shout to the guy behind the till, who was really friendly. All told, this is a great wee record store, and one that would definitely reward some serious browsing time.
