I don't know why is so famous, maybe because of the song, but I said...I need to take a picture of it...and several I did.. A wooden bridge spanning the Rhône between Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Avignon was built between 1177 and 1185. This early bridge was destroyed forty years later in 1226 during the Albigensian Crusade when Louis VIII of France laid siege to Avignon. Beginning in 1234 the bridge was rebuilt with 22 stone arches. The stone bridge was about 980 yd in length and only 16 ft 1 in in width, including the parapets at the sides. The bridge was abandoned in the mid-17th century as the arches tended to collapse each time the Rhône flooded making it very expensive to maintain. Four arches and the gatehouse at the Avignon end of the bridge have survived....and it's a tourist mecca. Many people get on, take pictures, stroll around the area.

The town is beautiful and all contained in high stone walls. The popes palace is a must see and try and go to a night time concert there, it was quite the experience! I could have spent another whole day here.

From medieval streets and houses to private mansions from the Renaissance, passing through all its old and enticing squares, some no bigger than a tiny lane... And the diverse dining opportunities, ranging from family-run restaurants, good and inexpensive to some of the greatest Michelin-starred chefs. Recognized for its architectural beauty and historic importance, the centre of Avignon was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, and the city served as the European cultural capital for 2000.

This place is nothing short of incredible! It's amazing to see something back home (in Washington…read morestate) that's over a hundred years old and we get really excited about a tree that's 300-400 years old. This structure has been around for 2 millennia and remains structurally sound - I feel like if they could get a waterway to stand for 2000 years, we should be able to figure out how to make a roof last more than 10 years! We opted for a group tour and despite not speaking French (our friends did) we learned a lot via those who could translate for us! The aqueduct traveled nearly 30 miles and only fell 35 feet from top to bottom. It also went out of commission in 500 AD due to calcium build up in the channel. The tour takes you through the actual waterway up top and provided some unparalleled views. We went on a cloudy day and I can only imagine how amazing this thing must have looked two thousand years ago on a sunny day. I can imagine it looks incredible in a sunny day today! If you have a chance to go here, you should do it. It's incredible from an engineering, history and general interest perspective!

Also called the Porte de Peyrou, it was completed in 1693 and depicts four separate events from Louis XIV's reign. The structure itself has panels and words on both sides of the arc. It's just a really beautiful landmark among a few others in the Jardin de Peyrou.

Every available wall, post and railing is covered in posters advertising the entertainment. The parade of performers on the first Thursday, when the Off opens, is a carnival all of itself. Performances of plays, opera, poetry, dance, comedy, jazz, etc are available all day every day, in a huge range of venues. Choose carefully, and a lack of good French need not impair your enjoyment. Book your hotel early.
