I was in the area absolutely starving -- like next-level hungry -- but I didn't want fast food or any big national chain. I drove into the center just to see what was there, and that's when I found Casera. The pictures in the window caught my eye, so I figured I'd stop in and try a few empanadas. The woman behind the counter told me they had three kinds that day: spinach and cheese, chicken, and beef. I ordered two of each and literally cleaned her out. From the moment I walked in, the place had such an authentic, family-run feel -- you can just tell when food is made with care. She asked if I wanted hot sauce, and I told her I love hot sauce. She handed me both a salsa verde and a salsa rojo, and man... after the very first bite (I started with the chicken), I completely lost my mind. I added the sauces and went to town. Before I knew it, I had eaten all six empanadas. I am ridiculously full right now, but they were so good I honestly couldn't stop myself. If I had ordered a dozen, I would've eaten a dozen. I enjoy a good Latin or South American dish and this place is mainly Peruvian & Colombian themed. I'm familiar with some Brazilian food and brands so I'm thrilled when I can come here for a Guaraná soda. I've had everything from their saltado dishes, empanadas of various kinds, an assortment of their pastries, and ready to go drinks. Everything has been good for the most part. Tho when I'm craving a dessert stop here I favor the guava pastry and the alfajores, & you have to special order the cheese Pastry/bread. I'm a huge fan of "pudim" that's how you say flan in Portuguese! Yet the flan is not my favorite here since the sugar caramelization it's usually cooked too much, causing a burnt flavor, and the consistency is too aerated rather than having a creamy and smooth consistency. I've tried it a few times and that seems to be their consistent style. We get cravings for this place and like that we're mainly serviced by the nice owners of this restaurant. came here during a weekday lunch for some latin food! i had my eye on the bean stuffed arepa, and was a little bit let down. they were not able to accommodate for vegan (filling is already pre made), which is fine, but then the actual dish itself was alright. i was pleasantly surprised by the tofu saltado!!! it was already vegan and was so crispy and yummy. love the flavors of the saltado and was surprised that the tofu was so good. tofu paired so well with the french fries, definitely a must order. also! they gave us salsas which were so good. green was too spicy for me, and the red was mild and added a great acidic/tomato-y flavor that enhanced each dish. in my party, we also got seafood ceviche and plantains. plantains were crunchy and delicious! inside there was lots of seating. decor was plentiful. we went at like 12 on a friday, and the place was buzzing with people by 1! will def stop by this place again read more

Well, I'm not going to lie I was a bit let down with my experience here. Coming from the East Coast my family and I adore Colombian food, so when my brother mentioned he found a spot nearby we all were so excited to try. We came by on Labor Day and it wasn't too busy whe. We first arrived, which we were happy about. To start off we were all VERY happy about the empanadas, user crispy, great balance to meat and potato on the inside. The buñuelos could have been better, they were hot but it didn't give freshly made..more like reheated. I ordered a coffee in the beginning to have as a pick me up before my food and didn't get it til right before we all left. Now when it comes to the main meal I ordered the bandeja paisa and so did most of us. My mom first thing noticed it didnt have the the small arepa, which none of our plates had it. My food was missing the avocado and the fried egg..I had to request it. None of the finished plates were cleared throughout our time there and it seemed like it was only 2 people working because the same guy taking our order was the same guy bringing our food and assisting everyone else who came in. Serving Peruvian and Columbian dishes this place is nestled in-between a row of businesses. Inside a busy strip mall. Plenty of parking available. The interior decor is worth taking a walk around to look at. I chose a Columbian dish; Bandeja Paisa. It includes; steak, chicharron (fried pork belly), chorizo, fried eggs, sweet plantains, arepa (flatbread), avocado and beans. You get to choose which type of rice you want. I really enjoyed my food. The plantains were my favorite. All of the meats were delicious (although the steak was a little bit dry) and paired well with the beans, rice, avocado and flatbread. It was enough for two meals for me! The nice lady that helped us was patient and answered all of our questions. I look forward to returning and trying out more latin dishes! A friend recommended that I try this Latin cuisine restaurant if I was ever in Oceanside. That happened recently after I visited another business in the area to participate in a Yelp promotion. Interestingly, there were at least three different Peruvian eateries on the same street across a three-mile stretch. I didn't think that this style of food would generate enough business in the neighborhood with this much competition. Casera Latin Kitchen and Bakery was located in the Rancho Del Oro Gateway Shopping Center. A different friend who lives nearby warned me that the parking lot had narrow spaces, and she was definitely right. The inside of the suite had an L-shaped dining area with around a dozen tables. Display cases at the service counter had prepackaged beverages, refrigerated desserts, baked goods, and pastries. The menu featured breakfast and lunch/dinner offerings from Colombia and Peru. The Tallarin Saltado was my first choice. This was a variation of the classic Lomo Saltado which I like to try at restaurants that serve this item. While the portion size was good, and the flavor of the sauce had the appropriate amount of acidity, the meat was much chewier than I had hoped. Normally, the beef strips are tender and flavorful, but mine was overcooked. The rest of the components were fine which were tomato, onions, and noodles (used instead of french fries and white rice). The other two products I chose were snacks in the form of an Empanada Frites Colombia and an Arepa Rellena de Chorizo. The first was a fried pastry versus baked which was the Peruvian style. The empanada was hot out of the fryer and had a good amount of savory chicken filling. The second was an open face dough stuffed with bits of pork. The seasoning and color on the meat closely resembled char siu which was familiar to my taste buds. For this visit, the appetizers outshined the entree. I hope that if I return to Casera Latin Kitchen and Bakery, the main dish I select will be executed on the same level as the products from the bakery. read more

I've been searching for empanadas like my mom bakes, and I found them at Casera. Who knew I could find delicious empanadas at such a great price, right on Oceanside Blvd in a small plaza (with parking available in the lot)? Casera's empanadas are a good size and just $3.50 each. I ordered the Beef, Chicken, and Spinach with Cheese Empanadas. The chicken and beef were packed with incredible flavor, and the breading on all of them was buttery, flavorful, and had that perfect soft crumb with a glazed outer crust I've been searching for. I even got full off just one empanada. I also tried the guava, cream cheese, and dulce de leche pastry, but I found the pastry to be a bit dry. Even so, I'm definitely coming back for more and more empanadas. I'm so happy I found this restaurant offering such great food at a great price. The Bandeja Paisa had so many different types of meat and the portion was huge! That could be a meal for 2 people. I noticed right away that this Peruvian place has a BAKERY area and I was excited Food that I ordered: *2 LOMO SALTADO *FRIED BEEF EMPANADA *BAKED BEEF EMPANADA *BANDEJA PAISA At first I only ordered the 1 LOMO SALTADO, 1 BADEJA PAISA, and a BEEF EMPANADA. They were so good that I ordered another LOMO SALTADO and BEEF EMPANADA. My goodness, after the first bite on my LOMO SALTADO I fell in love with it. I eat a lot of PERUVIAN food, but recently I can't get the perfect Tenderness of the meat on my Lomo Saltado and the Authentic Peruvian sauce on my Loma Saltado that I'm used to at the Peruvian restaurants in the area of SD. But here in CASERA wow, soooo TENDER MEATS, as in really soft. And the Sauce is savory and citrusy, it's really balance on my LOMO SALTADO. My Bandeja Paisa was delicious too, but thats not what I was focused on, I was more into my favorite, the Lomo Saltado. And I ordered 2 Different BEEF EMPANADAS: One was FRIED EMPANADAS and the other one was BAKED EMPANADAS. One of the EMPANADAS was a PERUVIAN EMPANDA and one was a COLUMBIA EMPANADA. Was staying in San Marcos for the weekend and decided to look for a new Peruvian place. I was really excited to find a Peruvian AND Colombian place! Where I grew up in NY, the neighborhood was sometimes called "little Colombia" i miss it! You DO NOT find a lot of Colombian places in California. We ordered their homemade chicha morada. I love when it's made in house. It wasn't very sweet but the flavor was great. We tried a bunch of things on the menu. We tried the Peruvian tamales, unfortunately, something in the reheating process seemed to mess up the texture of the masa, also the pork smelled off. We also wanted to try the chicharron but they didn't hear the order so we never got it. We ordered the lomito al jugo, which you don't see on Peruvian menus out here often. It's a beef dish with onions and tomatoes. Upon receiving the dish, in a flat plate, we were immediately disappointed by its lack of jugo (juice). There was not enough sauce and even if there had been, serving it on a flat plate wouldn't work. We asked for more sauce and the server just kinda shrugged us off. The flavors of the dish were right but the cut of meat was all wrong, so the beef was not tender at all. We also ordered the tallarin verde with the lomo saltado on the side. The plate was swimming in green water, none of which stuck to the pasta. Tallarin verde is usually a creamy pesto and this wasn't it. It was another disappointment. The lomo saltado had great flavor but again the beef was not the right cut and it was dry and not tender. We also orders the pescado ala macho, this wasn't delicious and creamy and had fish, shrimp and calamari. We enjoyed this dish. Only complaint was the yucca wasn't prepared correctly as there was strings of root fiber throughout. We also had the seco de carne with rice and beans. This was the best dish we had. The meat was tender, the flavor was right. The dish was perfect! The dish was so good that I could forgive the other dishes and want to come back to try more! I'll give them another try, maybe it was an off day. I'd like to try the aji de gallina and ceviche and the Colombian dishes. read more

This one didn't hit the mark for me. We came on a Wednesday evening around 5:15 and it wasn't busy yet. Tried the Pernil, Lomo Saltado, and a few empanadas. Pernil is a marinated pork leg and it was served with white rice and beans. The pork was mostly dry, with a few moist parts throughout. The parts that were moist, had good flavor and tenderness. The beans looked and tasted as if they were a day or two old, but the rice was pretty good. I had three empanadas total, two baked and one fried. The baked empanadas were served really hot and the fillings had pretty good flavor. The pastry to filling ratio was high, but that could be attributed to differences in type of empenada. The fries empenada was tasty, the beer had great flavor. Lomo Saltado was good, the beef had good flavor and wasn't over cooked. The veggies were tender and there was sufficient. Ours seemed to have few fries overall though. The biggest let down was that our food didn't look like the pictures other yelpers have provided. After a long day running errands, my son and I were famished and I remembered about wanting to try this restaurant (I call it a restaurant even though it looks like a small bakery, you can place your orders at the counter). As a Miami native with a deep appreciation for the diverse flavors of Latin America, I was thrilled to find such an authentic culinary haven in Oceanside. The menu was a tantalizing tapestry of Peruvian and Colombian delights, making it nearly impossible to choose, there was so much I wanted to try.. but we got Papa Rellenas, a Beef arepa and my son got the Bistec Encebollado. I had the most delicious baked beef empanada as an appetizer and selected the dish recommended by the hostess for my entree. And even though I don't know what the name of the dish was, I can tell you that the dish delivered great flavor and comfort food vibe. My plate included white rice and beans with beef chunks and pickled red onions on top. I've never had Peruvian or Colombian food before, and this is now one of my new favorite places. Additionally, the restaurant is very clean and well kept. They have 100 out of 100 on inspection. You can taste the love and time that goes into making this delicious food. This Latin restaurant & bakery is located conveniently on Oceanside Blvd & College intersection, in the Rancho Del Oro Gateway Shopping Center EAST of the traffic light. But it is a Very Busy plaza that is typically crowded and has tight-packed parking spaces. The interior is spacious with plenty of space for group seating or intimate dining for 2 in the back. Service is Super-Friendly and welcoming. There is a bakery-side that serves so many beloved pastries and cultural snacks and then there is the diner-side, which has the option for pre-prepped meals or food made-to-order. The owners know the value of making sure that customers have the best dining experiences and will even give you the historical background of food items to help you understand the dishes creation. There's an abundance to choose from and they also have some vegetarian & vegan options available. I personally love their empanadas, which are very flavorful and flaky. Their lomo saltado was also great and so was their fish dish. You can always customize your dishes, mixing & matching items and this makes the menu options very expansive and preferable. This is great to never get bored tasting! Overall, I love what Casera Latin Kitchen & Bakery brings to Oceanside's dining scene and the only "Con" I have experienced is the tight-parking scenario. Wow! What a treat. If you want to try something unique, then I recommend Casera Latin Kitchen. It is a simple bakery/restaurant that offers a wide variety of baked goods, drinks, and entrees. The entrees we ordered included Lomo Saltado & Bandeja Paisa. Both plates were humongous - enough food for 3-4 people. The Lomo Saltado was meaty, crispy, and salt while the Babdeja Paisa was interesting. It consisted of lots of different items that surprisingly paired well together - crispy pork belly, overeasy eggs, rice, plantains, arepa (sweet corn patty), and sausage. We were curious about other items so we tried the best thing ever - guava, cream cheese and caramel bread & cheese bread. The cheese bread was like a jumbo size Brazilian bread. My eyes became hearts like the emoji. The only thing that I was extremely disappointed in was the tres leches. I read so many reviews raving about it, but my share seemed to be extemely dry, which is the opposite of what tres leches is. I couldn't finish it because of how dry it was. Overall though, I would return to try more items. I figure the tres leches happened to be a bad batch. read more
