I had only been on a Vespa twice before so choosing the 50cc was the best choice for me and my friend. The scariest thing is not driving the machine but navigating it through traffic. And I only say scary to those that are hesitant drivers. Italiens have places to go and be so drive with the flow of traffic and make sure you know where you're going and GO! Originally,…read moreI thought their representations were "accidental" but they consistently have issues with (1) availability of the product you reserve - when you show up they tend to have less powerful models that do not have enough power to move with traffic in busy Rome; (2) their equipment is older and god knows they do not even disinfect their helmets so bring your own or don't rent from them in the Covid-19 age; and (3) when they say they will credit you for the issues, don;t count on it. They wouldn't honor it with me and Visa would not even address the issues because the company makes you sign their agreement which then negates the ability to contest charges with Visa. As an alternative another disgruntled customer let me know of another company that is right by the Termini station. i tried them and I like them a lot. They have a better selection and are reasonably forgiving if you are a few minutes late to return as it can sometimes be hard to meander your way around Rome's streets. Best part, they are only about 1/2 mile from "My Vespa". If you search scooter rentals termini you should find the other place.

How often do you get to ride around in an Italian city in a side car? We started and ended at the Palazzo Venezia. Of the three, the bike tour was the longest and the least mandatory, for lack of a better word. It was also one of the best things we did on our entire vacation. I picked this tour because it was highly rated on various travel sites and my husband Matt B. is an avid cyclist. It was a six-hour, 17-mile tour of Appian Way, the Catacombs of Saint Calixtus, and the Park of the Aqueducts, 9AM to 3PM with a stop for a casual lunch. I booked it for our one Sunday in Rome, when Appian Way would be closed to car traffic. We went to Top Bike on Sunday morning, which looked like a comprehensive bike rental joint in addition to a tour company. It was a big place, and there were a few small groups gathering, all us tourists getting assigned bikes and guides. We had the great luck of landing in Nima's group, with three other couples. He gave us a brief, informative orientation and we were on our way. I didn't really know what to expect from this tour (my fault/laziness, not theirs) and had been a bit apprehensive about the amount of biking involved. I'd never ridden an e-bike before, and if I had, I would not have been worried. I wouldn't even say we got exercise on that 17-mile ride. The only challenging part was the uneven terrain of Appian Way. I could see that being an issue for small children or frail seniors, but otherwise anyone who can pedal and balance can go on this tour. And they absolutely should. The tour was incredible. Nima was a wonderful guide, so warm and knowledgeable and conscientious. It can't be easy leading a bunch of bumbling tourists on e-bikes, many of them retirees, on a route that takes them through city streets. But he was great, responsible and watchful while we rode. He was equally impressive as a tour guide, imparting a wealth of knowledge at every stop. We stopped frequently, seeing, among other jaw-dropping sights we pedaled right past, the Basilica Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the Mausoleo di Cecilia, and the Chiesa di San Nicola a Capo di Bove. Nima told us about the gates and walls leading into Rome, and the Baths of Caracalla, which we waved at as we crossed the street a quarter-mile away. The three main attractions were as advertised, and we started with the catacombs tour, an optional add-on that I would definitely recommend. (You can book a four-hour version of the same tour that skips the catacombs, but hey, when in Rome.) Nima and Top Bike weren't involved in this leg, other than buying the tickets and getting us there, but it was fantastic, very worth our while. The catacombs were on Appian Way, which was apparently the place to be buried if you had money and status in ancient Rome. The heart of our tour took us along this road, over 2,000 years old and still in remarkable condition. We biked over stones marked with grooves from chariot wheels. We stopped for a casual lunch that was much better and less haphazard than I'd expected, at a pay-by-weight pizzeria called Pizza Gege. Then we went to the Park of the Aqueducts. I didn't know anything about Roman aqueducts, and when I booked this tour, I was only mildly curious why we'd be visiting a park devoted to them. Turns out aqueducts are a quintessential part of ancient Roman city planning and architecture. They're astonishing and beautiful, and I'll remember biking among them for the rest of my life. I know there's a lot to see in Rome, and a six-hour tour outside the city center might seem like a big commitment. But the Top Bike Rentals Appian Way tour is an A+++ excursion. I'd recommend it to anyone, visiting for any amount of time.

The other people on our tour were also devout Catholic. I believe the tour was done by Maria Lazara. We do not know her name because she did not bother to introduce herself, nor did she ask our names (aside from checking our family name off). We met at the statue and then without any introduction to our tour, nor introduction to the St John of Laterna Church, she marched off in front of us to the Church's portico. It was a bad start. That's the main complaint: she gave no introduction to the tour or any site, she gave no church or historic context on how things came to be or how they evolved. She gave no Catholic perspective. A tour guide needs to be a storyteller! And I expected a guide well-versed in church history, both religious and urban! Instead, it was a bunch of random historic facts. She primarily spent her time pointing out symbolism in the paintings and mosaics. Clearly, she majored in art history, and the history of Christianity was a boring sideline to her. She liked pointing out that Laterna was populated early, while most of Rome was countryside - but why? How did that change? Where did Catholics live and why did they move? Why were these churches chosen for their Holy Doors? Why only 4 doors? She told us the Laterna Holy Door was an original bronze and a couple more facts and then we marched through as it were nothing. Nothing about why it is special that they are open, how Catholics view this moment, etc. IT IS SPECIAL. In speaking about the Jubilee, the only thing she said was that the Pope first started it once every 100 years, and since the Roman townspeople made money on tourism from the incoming pilgrims, they moved it to every 33 years or when they wanted. That's it - Jubilees were about making tourism dollars. End of her story. None of our group of 3 heard that the Sacred Steps were brought from Jerusalem and why, and where they were placed originally. All she did was say "it is not a hard job to move stairs." THEY ARE SPECIAL. She just said: you can up if you want, I'll wait here on my phone. Again, her specialty seemed to be art history not Catholic traditions or history, and 75% of the time, she spoke about symbolism. The blue and yellow of Mary, the keys of St. Peter. That's fine but there was no narrative, no church history. The tour ended exactly at 12 p.m. Clearly, she was glad to be out of there. Another note - yes, her English vocabulary was good, but she spoke sing-song Italian style and it was hard to follow her. She does not have the cadence of an English speaker. Very disappointed in Eternity Tours' guide. Aside: I really enjoyed Eternity Tours newsletter mailings.

This tour was worth the money spent. First, you catch the train and meet with the tour guide. My tour guide was Max. He was super knowledgeable and had funny jokes throughout the tour. He's a local and has traveled to many countries outside of his town of Frascati. We take a little tour of the town and he gives some history and we went into some shops and the main church there. Next, we stopped into a bakery and sampled some cheap, house wine (as he calls it) that is saved for families to drink with some sweet cookies. We were instructed to dip the cookies in the wine. Delish! Prior to that we got a little same of roasted pork with the wine as a light snack. Then a taxi comes to pick us up and take the group to the vineyard. We tour the vineyard and take awesome pictures. There's an awesome view of Rome from the vineyard. We then went into the cellar where the wine is stored and got a very detailed tour of the underground and the winemaking process. Next, we enter the tasting room. We received 3 (1 white, q red , 1 dessert wine) quality Frascati wines paired with a white pizza, red sauce pizza and bread. Olive oil that they also make at the vineyard is on the table to sample. Throughout each wine tasting, Max teaches about the wine. Lastly! The taxi returned to take the group to have lunch at a local restaurant back in the town. We received an appetizer of arugula, sautéed zucchini, I think a sautéed mushroom and some meat. Then we got a small portion of a red sauce pasta and then a carbonara with bacon bits (they had pairings and lunch options for anyone who was vegetarian as well). I was just enough food to leave me satisfied. I really enjoyed this tour! The tour is from about 10:30am to 2pm (you can catch the 2:36pm train back to termini or stay and enjoy the town until about 9pm when the last train comes). The small group setting was great for a nice intimate tour, easy picture taking and getting all your questions in. There were 9 people in my group but the tour has a 15 person max. I booked this tour super last minute on my way from Spain and they were accommodating. My only con was email response was a bit slow. I just showed up in hopes I was confirmed. I'm so glad I went! I believe you can only pay in cash, so be mindful of that. Bottles of the red and white wines are 10€ and the dessert wine is 15€ (if I remember correctly). Wine purchases are in cash as well.
