Prepare to stay in line and queue up to buy some espadrilles or other spanish made sandals/shoes. They have the lowest prices around the area. They do take credit cards. Make sure to take note of the number of the style design of shoes you want to purchase. It will make things easier and the line move faster.

So many shoes. All made the same way they were made years ago

Calling anyone who likes espadrilles! this is the place for you!! The shop, is small, not far from Plaza Mayor has been there since the beginning of time (it seems). I swear, people from around the world flock to this location to get their shoes, which are being made the same way there were made since it opened. Every color possible almost every style possible. They custom make them to your foot. Fair warning, come during prime time, and expect to wait in a LONG line.

    Look at all the shoes!!!!

What an amazing store!!! I came here the morning of my flight back to New York to pick up last minute souvenirs and ended up with another pair for myself. I arrived right after the shop opened and I had their undivided attention. Their workers speak minimal English but you can definitely communicate with them. They are so attentive and willing to help that language was really not a barrier. The prices are phenomenal. For the basic espradrilles, it was only 7 eur!!! I paid 12 eur when I was in Barcelona. Boy, did I regret not waiting until Madrid to buy my shoes. They also had more sizes than La Manual Alpargatera in Barcelona as well. All the styles were definitely cheaper. SO shopping tip for everyone out there: if you're visiting both Madrid and Barcelona, come here for your espradrille needs.

Line was huge!!!!! We waited over an hour and a half. Thankfully we were there 2 hours before closing. But there was a huge line after us that were denied entrance since it was past closing time. They had waited over an hour too. If you are planning to go, expect to wait. And go at least three hours before closing or you won't make it in!

Shoes, glorious shoes! Casa Hernanz is a family-owned shoe store just outside the Plaza Mayor. As others have noted, a line builds up quickly once the store opens, so get there early. Shoes are comfortable, cute, and affordable--my two pairs cost me around $50 USD total. There are dozens of styles to choose from and a rainbow of colors. Casa Hernanz is not a tourist-oriented business, so the people who work here don't speak very much English. I recommend that you come in knowing how to say the following in Spanish: 1. Your European shoe size 2. One number bigger and one number smaller than that size, in case you need a different size 3. Some basic color words 4. Hello, please, thank you, and goodbye They do give you a yard stick so you can indicate which shoes you mean, but it makes the whole process more efficient if you can point to a style and say "In blue, size forty, please." Credit cards are accepted, but not American Express.

I researched and knew I had to stop here and at least look around this beautiful old shop especially after reading reviews first. I came in the morning and there was only one other rather needy lady there being helped. Which was fine my husband tried on some shoes and then I found the perfect pair. They are animal print and I am in love with them and they are handmade! For the price about 15 euro you cannot go wrong at all. Stop in if you are in Spain. They will even tolerate you if you have horrible Spanish.

When you are in Spain you should buy at least one pair of locally made shoes. Shoes in Spain are really good. There are a LOT of choices, good quality and low prices. I've read about Casa Hernanz on the internet and decided to pay them a visit. I was not disappointed. They have a lot of espadrillas to choose from. The store was not very crowded and the guy we talked to was very friendly and helpful. He seemed to only speak Spanish. I bought myself a pair of shoes for 24 euros only. I wore them a couple of times here in LA and they seem to be very comfy.

Once I knew I was going to Spain, I HAD to do research on where to buy espadrilles! This was one of the places that popped up in my search as one of the places that you must go to when in Madrid. The New York Times even wrote an article on this place and raved about it. We waited for about 45 minutes in line, but it was totally worth it! There are 3 windows full of shoes next to the front door, so you have lots of time to decide what you want to buy. When you walk in there's a long wooden counter and then one of the guys will ask you what you want. There's a wall of shoes inside and you point to which shoe you want with this wooden stick. I couldn't reach so I had them point for me. I've worn my espadrilles to work and they are not only super cute, but pretty comfy too! Also, the prices were very reasonable considering almost everything was handmade. I paid about 10 euros for flats with the cotton straps. If you find yourself in Madrid, you must come here!!!

Huge selection of alpargatas(espadrilles). Very affordable and great service. There's so many, it will be difficult to just buy one pair.

It's pretty famous... there's always a long line, despite the other espadrille shops. Plus they have so many choices.
