I am an unabashed chocoholic, and have consumed enough of the stuff to have possibly frittered away the equivalent of a small down payment on a house... but I have done so without remorse! These days I do however severely limit my intake as my father was diagnosed with adult onset diabetes a few years ago. Half of my family on my father's side are now deemed to be diabetic, and so I thought that I'd better start wising up to the issues of eating too much sugar before it was too late for me.
This is when I discovered the joy of Carob! It's considered to be a healthy chocolate substitute, and is widely available in health food shops these days. I personally don't think that it compares that favourably to Belgian chocolate, but I do like it for what it is regardless. The Plamil Orange bars are my favourite mass produced carob bars! They are deliscious!
So, imagine my excitement, which quickly turned into confusion, and then ultimately disappointment when I thought I'd discovered a local farm that produced Carob raw!?! The reality, of course, is that they don't produce Carob at all! But the silver lining is that they do produce some of the best fruit in this area! They are a small specialist grower of organic soft and top fruit that is without exception utterly deliscious! Best of all, everything is picked to order, so it is as fresh as if it were being picked from your own garden. It is available at various fruit and veg shops and farmers markets around these 'ere parts! read more
