We were told that many of the sellers in the street markets dont actually sell local good as many them source their nuts, pastas, from other countries where they can get the items cheaper and just pass it off as being local. We ended up finding all the items we need including panetone at a reasonable price. If your looking to bring shelf stable good back home like pistachio cream, jams, nuts, cookies, etc. or just looking to pick up some stuff to cook rather than eating out then this is the place to come to.

There aren't many larger supermarkets around, so this is the place to go if you want one-stop…read moreshopping. But, be advised: the staff here are not very nice. Even if you manage to get your message across in broken Italian, your request for a Carrefour store card in order to access the discounts may be denied (they told me I couldn't apply until next month) and they may scorn you if you hand over an ever-so-large 20 euro bill to pay for 4 euros worth of groceries. (I guess I should start expecting the ATM to dole out fivers instead of 20s.) Yep, both these things happened to me. Worse yet, after asking for the discount card and asking if there was another way to get the discounted prices, the staff member said the checkout clerk could just give me the price if I asked. But, when I asked, the girl said no (while a checkout clerk in another city said yes with a smile). In addition, there are enough places in Palermo to get cheap food that you really don't need to come here for more than drinking water. Bottom line: There are reasons Palermo isn't a tourist destination, and the scornful attitudes of these folks may beat the fact that there's dog poop everywhere on the streets. Am I proud of my Sicilian heritage? Not if I factor in my several scornful trips to this market! Walk on!
