Came here to shop a few times during our 8-night stay in town. We've known the shop from other…read morevisits before. It's a mid-sized shop with everything you might need. Good wine selection, fruits and veggies. Also fresh fish, seafood and meat counter. We bought some nice Bottarga, lots of canned tuna and anchovies. Seafood broth. Fresh chicken and beef. Veggies and salad. Some milk and soda. Also needed a cookie box - and found it here. Quality was good, prices are fair. You pay at the cashier (cash or card) or you can you the convenient self-checkout. Accepts even small coins or also cards. The shop might look a bit dark and dated inside, but it was a good shopping experience and we've found everything we've needed.

It's the one with the baby in the circle if you happen to be a water snob like me. It's a challenge to find decent tasting bottled water throughout Italy. So much of the bottled water tastes odd, even if the tap water is fine to drink. I was told by a reliable American that the best water thus far had been in Firenze, and the worst was in Venezia. At any rate, it's better than SoCal water which I won't touch. I can't help it that I was always spoiled with good water my whole life! Anyway, they had tons of my water here, all for--get this--30 cents for a big bottle. No wonder the Italians complain about the prices of our drinks! That's how they should be priced. I didn't even get a chance to check out the wine and cheese but I was happy. The self serve check out was faster than SoCal, too which is why this has to be a four!

While there were only a few whole olives atop the pizza, the rich olive flavor came through and blended well with the rest. As a cherry on top, it was only €2.70 for a large rectangular piece! Would highly recommend this cute little place. Other tips: only has one small 2-seater so not great to stay...more of a grab and go. Ended up buying some Amaretti, spice mix and some anchovies in oil with chili. Prices were a bit on the higher end, but hey, it's Portofino. Quality-wise all products were really nice, of course we got some for ourselves as well. Amaretti were nice, good flavour. The spice mix is very useful for cooking some good pasta and the anchovies are nice for some charcuterie plates. Good stuff if you're into anchovies like us. Enjoyed our shopping here and walked away happy.

The merengue in particular were stellar. These guys have been in business since 1911 and you can see why with every bite. While you can say this about many Italian bakeries; Canale is better than any typical US bakery, that's for sure. I hate being so deprived back home!
