It was exquisite and lovely. And once I got done admiring the craftsmanship of the LFL I realized how beautiful the home was and considered how much thought and care and effort the owners had put into it. It is bewilderingly beautiful. And this street with it's generous lawns and its stately, mature trees offering house-sized pools of breezy, cool shade all up and down the block, it is just stunning. So naturally a family that has made this lovely location their home can do no less, when offering a resource to the community, than to make it just as approachably elegant and enticingly excellent as the rest of this gorgeous street. They have succeeded handsomely. It is a pleasure just to stand in front of this remarkable home and to soak in the allure and the appeal. And after a long, satisfying several minutes there your realize that a book selection was entirely optional.

It seems that Lantern Tree Books did occupy a real brick and mortar location back in 2023, but that location has closed and they are now in the process of opening in a new location. I even checked their website and they provide no warning that the old store is closed and the new store has not yet open. At least we were able to visit the Friends of the Carpinteria library book store and then head over to Barts in Ojai.

There is a retro Airstream parked outside, and coffee & pastries are served through a partnership with beloved local coffee biz Dart Coffee Co. Service runs daily from 7am to 5pm, Monday through Sunday. You can absolutely grab a coffee, sit on the side patio, and enjoy the vibe without buying a book. Low pressure. Very appreciated. Inside, there are two floors to explore with a solid selection of books, art, and gifts. The children's section upstairs is especially sweet. The "blind date with a book" wall is a standout, and the staff pick recommendation cards are a thoughtful touch that makes browsing more fun. They also host private events, main stage conversations, workshops, and children's storytimes. It's co-owned by a former literary agent who runs in Oprah Winfrey circles, so yes, there is a little celebrity sparkle floating around. If you're lucky and into that kind of thing, celebrity sightings can happen even during a casual browse, not just at ticketed events. There is a Founder's Circle with a waitlist and a $250 per month price tag if you want exclusive events, early access, reservations, content, and café discounts. Not for everyone, but if that's your lane, it exists. Dog friendly, aesthetically pleasing, and clearly designed as a community space. The main complaint people seem to have is parking, which honestly feels like a very Summerland problem. Avoid parking in the hilly neighborhood streets. Neighbors hate it. Go for the ambiance, the books, and the coffee. Stay if you feel inspired.
