Linden Street looking towards the hills
    Debra R.

Carpinteria is the best little beach town around. When the Spanish arrived they found Chumash sitting on the beach building canoes and using the tar pits to seal them. The tar pits are still here but I rarely get tar on my feet when walking the wide sandy beach at the end of Linden Street. The perfect beach day for me includes lunch at Cabo grill with margaritas, or maybe trying out the new brew pub also on Carpinteria Avenue. I either walk or drive down Linden and park in the free parking lot at the end of the street. I leave my shoes in the car and stroll out on the soft sand and take a long beach walk. If I get here earlier I will take the walk first then park behind Crush Cakes and have a nice salad or burrito and some iced tea on their patio and then check out the antique stores and specialty shops on Linden. The city recently added a large playground area in the large park by the state beach. There are some nice sculptures around town and there's even a Vons in the middle of town to pick up a lunch so you can enjoy the several picnic areas down near the beach.

If you find yourself in the Southern California coastal town of Carpentaria, check out the…read moreWardholme Torrey Pine tree. It towers majestically dominating the 5100 block of Carpenteria Avenue. It's the largest Torrey Pine in the world. Come by and see it for yourself. It won't be around forever. This tree was planted in 1888, it was a seedling taken from nearby Santa Rosa Island. It's about 130 feet tall, spread of 130 feet, and trunk circumference of 20 inches. Glorious beauty. Wardholme is named after the first non native landowner, Judge Thomas Ward. where the seedling was planted. Before European settlement, the Torrey pines were a food source for the native Kumeyaay. The Kumeyaay ate the edible pine nuts. Another interesting fact about the Torrey pine trees is that they are native to only a small restrictive territory of coastal San Diego and portions of the Santa Rosa Island in California. Typically Torrey pine trees only live no more than 100 years and get about 30 feet tall. So with those data points, it makes this Torrey pine all that special. See it before it's no longer. So glad I did.

It's a short, easy walk (about a mile) from the charming downtown area, and it provides a much-needed bit of exercise after your lunch, dinner, or ice cream.

So I sauntered myself into the library. It's small in square footage but they sure do pack a lot into the space. Besides books, they have computer (laptops) for in library use by library card holders. There was a cozy children's book and activity area giving off homey vibes. The armchairs added to that vibe along with the architecture of the building. They even had a covered front porch with pub height tables and chairs. Comfy place to crack open your laptop to use the WiFi. Fun fact: the Carpinteria city library was established on November 10, 1910 and was the first county library in California. (Ohhh the 1st). That original building was on 892 Linden Ave. See I learned a new fact. I picked up that little nugget by reading the funky lettered carved wooden sign in the courtyard.

The smell of the…read morebooks, the sight of rows of orderly books and seeing a lady behind a large desk with cat glasses takes me back to lovely memories. I could spend a whole afternoon here (I wish there was an espresso bar). The library is small but has plenty book books in all topics. The helpful staff set us up with a library card and off we went with 7 books.
