I had been talking to one of the owners, Audrey, and managed to arrange to go over after the rain stopped yesterday. It turned out to be a stunning afternoon. The water was completely clear and almost flat. I took out a kayak first. Then went back and joined a small group for a stand-up paddle board lesson. The owners are very personable and knowledgeable. They give you life jackets, and a whistle, just in case. They also had a bunch of dog life jackets. It's $18 for an hour on the paddle board and $12 for an hour on the kayak. They have the $2 park parking passes there. Weather permitting they are normally open from 11am-6pm during the summer. If you have a group, you can also call ahead and arrange a time that works for you. They can also deliver the water toys. If you wanted to rent boards for a party or for a weekend that could probably be done as well. I'm kinda bummed my birthday is in March! As it is, I'll definitely be back.

All in all, a great experience. I can't take any of the credit, as my husband is the one who booked the boat and went to get it, and was our boat chauffeur for most of the day, but from what he's told me, and from the condition of the boat, it seemed like it was a smart choice to go with Finger Lakes Boat Rental. We passed the name along to the guy who we were renting the vacation house from, and he was excited, as many tenants don't know where to go to get a boat. Working with the company was very easy, and they were all so nice, and even knew my husband by name. They were very accomodating as well, as we were the only ones to rent a boat that day (we pretty much had the entire Cayuga Lake to ourselves). Actor explaining to her that most of us is just trying to maintain what we have and that she is very blessed but some of us have to use public transportation she could not understand that concept and advise me that she will only allow me to reschedule not knowing when I will have a car next. The staff was really friendly but also seemed overwhelmed at times. When we got on the boat we found none of the gauges worked, including the gas gauge and speedometer, which seem pretty important for driving a boat. The ladder is only two rungs and about 9 inch wide which makes getting back onto the boat very hard and painful at times. You really need to throw yourself back on the boat if you decide to go swimming. The motor also seemed under-powered and sputtered at times if you gave it too much gas. But the biggest joke is you are apparently not allowed in the lake which we were never told about from the start. I know, right? A boat is not allowed in another connected public waterway. If you are out there some rude kid on a green jet ski will ride out to you and yell at you. I asked them back at the shop if there is someone out there guarding the lake because it seemed ridiculous and we weren't sure if this guy was even affiliated with the shop. But they dejectedly said yeah it was probably the boss' son. I can only assume they don't want you on the lake because these boats could probably break down at any moment. When I told them about the broken gauges they just told me "yeah, they're all like that". Bottom line, if you are looking to save money and rent a boat that essentially just runs this is the place for you. If you want a better experience and be allowed to go into the public lake spend the extra money and go somewhere else.

And much bigger than I expected it to be…read more Situated along Owasco Lake, there are beach areas, a dog park, sizeable pavilions, a boat launch, and all sorts of spaces (the Merry-Go Round Playhouse Theater is also located in this park). My one complaint? There could certainly be more / better signage. When looking for the bathroom recently, the first closed one (over by Merry-Go Round) directed you to the large pavilion on the main (other) side of the park. When there, you were directed to actually use the bathrooms at the little league field (up near the entrance back on the other side of the park). Also, for newcomers who are trying to find the dog park or whatnot, some extra signage would be helpful (the dog park is kinda tucked away). TL;DR Very much enjoyed my recent visit here - I'll be back! :)

My son and I came up from Central Texas to try catching some NY Smallmouth. We're used to fishing…read morebass tournaments down here and so a guide with a trolling motor on the front and set up to actually cast vs. troll with downriggers was hard to find. My wife (who is from the region) came across Captain Jay. His smallmouth trip was just what we were looking for! His boat sets up perfectly for people used to casting to cover / fishing ledges. His rods and reels were just right for fighting smallmouth and were all in excellent working order (not always the case with some guides). He put us on the fish and we had an excellent morning/afternoon. When one spot cooled down, he wasn't afraid of burning some gas and try somewhere else. On top of all that - Jay is a HOOT!! Even if we weren't catching fish, I imagine time on the water of the beautiful Finger Lakes with Cap'n Jay would time well spent.
