I started calling around to places that weren't going to charge me my left kidney to help me file but everywhere I called only helped in DV situations. I finally found Ms. Montbach who handles uncontested divorces for low income households. Her fee at the time was $500 plus the court fee of $125. I personally had already paid $210 for an index number when I submitted my separation agreement to the courts else that fee would have been included too. I was able to work a payment plan out with her and upon receiving my first half she began the long process for me. It took over a year from start to finish but that is through no fault of her own. My ex-spouse took a while to sign the papers and then because I filed during covid-19 there were a backlog of cases so my case took forever and a day to reach before a judge. Today Ms.Montbach sent me the email I have been waiting for. I'm finally divorced! I imagine she has a lot of cases to handle so she does not really e-mail you updates unless there is something she needs from you but if you email her for an update she is very responsive! Thank you so much Ms.Monthbach for your help!

She didn't respond for 2-3 months and so after a year we found out that she made a very careless mistake of misspelling our name in the documents which invalidated the entire process. This led to us needing to file everything all over again and having to wait for over a year for this to be processed. She told us it would be around 3-6 months and she took half a year just getting the documents sorted out, and now its been over a year because of her careless mistakes and we are still waiting for it be reviewed. This entire experience could've been much faster and less stressful but she was extremely unprofessional and unresponsive.

Nicole Barnum is a blessing…read more She is diligent, motivated, and is able to see beyond her own perspective - and I believe that that was key to our successfully winning the custody battle in 2011. When I first met Nicole, I was emotionally broken, physically bruised and was terrified of loosing my child. My life and my child's future were in the hands of a judge that knew nothing about us. Nicole listened carefully to me and took notes. When I was done, she explained the custody law, and identified the best approach for my specific case, and told me what the entire process will entail. The next morning, as we walked the corridors of the family court for the first time, I could see how many people recognized Nicole. She knew those corridors well. What intrigued me, was seeing how other attorneys approached her with great respect - even those who had once stood against her in court. That says a lot about Nicole. She is a fighter, but she keeps it clean - and that has built her a great reputation with the lawyers for children and the judges. My custody case was very complex, and while it was easy to loose sight of the basics in the court room, Nicole successfully brought it all back to the key issue: the best interest of the child. We had several trials over several months, and each and every time, Nicole walked into the courtroom fully prepared. Her expertise and experience in articulating her arguments clearly, and always supported by the needed facts and research, appealed to the court. Nicole remembered every fact, every incident and every date. Nicole never gave me false promises, even when my emotional side desperately called for it. Her answers about what to expect were always straight and clear - and she got the expectations about what was probably going to happen next right every time. She knows the law, she knows the legal tactics and she knows the do's and don'ts in the family courtrooms. I would not be fair to Nicole, if I say that it was only her professionalism that helped us through those difficult times. Her conscientious, trustworthy and kind character is exemplary. If you are looking for a custody attorney in New York, and if you want peace of mind that you are doing all you can to win your custody battle, I highly recommend that you set-up a meeting to consult with Nicole Barnum.
