We went into our Carnival Sunshine cruise excited to spend time together as a family and make memories. There were some truly wonderful moments because of a few crew members who went above and beyond. Unfortunately, those positive experiences were overshadowed by issues with food, service, cleanliness, and the overall condition of the ship.
The highlights of our trip were the crew members who made a genuine effort to make our daughter's experience special.
Our day in Bimini was wonderful. Radio Beach was beautiful, the people of Bimini were kind and welcoming, and our shuttle driver was fantastic.
Jamal, our room steward, was one of the best parts of the cruise. He made towel animals for our daughter throughout the trip and even incorporated the stuffed animal she brought from home into the creations. By the end of the cruise, he had created a whole collection, and seeing how happy that made her was priceless.
The waitress near the Red Frog Pub also deserves recognition. She noticed our daughter was searching for hidden ducks around the ship and told us to come back at a certain time because she wanted to hide ducks from her own cabin for our daughter to find. That was such a thoughtful gesture, and we made sure to tip her extra.
Camp Ocean was another positive experience. The staff were always friendly and welcoming, and our daughter truly enjoyed her time there.
Unfortunately, many other parts of the cruise did not meet our expectations.
Celebration Key was one of the biggest disappointments. We rented a daybed expecting the advertised experience where guests would check in with the Cabana Concierge and be escorted to their private retreat. Instead, we were pointed toward the daybeds and told to find one that was available. Guests were left trying to figure out which beds were actually taken, which created unnecessary confusion.
Our daybed did not have an umbrella, the advertised pillows were missing, and there was no attendant service available to order drinks or refreshments. The Suncastle racing slides were also disappointing, with longer lines and slower slides than those on the ship. Overall, Celebration Key felt more like a large pool with expensive shops rather than the relaxing destination we expected.
Another major issue was the smoke smell throughout the ship. Many areas smelled strongly of cigarettes, cigars, or marijuana. The odor was so strong that our luggage and clothing smelled like smoke when we got home.
The food was one of the biggest disappointments. Buffet food was often cold, dry, overcooked, or lacking freshness. The scrambled eggs appeared to be made from a powdered mix, and the sausage was frequently cold in the middle. The dining room food was consistently bland, and the overall quality felt more like cafeteria food than a cruise dining experience.
The Guy Fieri Burger Joint had good burgers, but the wait was consistently 35 to 50 minutes.
Service also had many issues. The deli was especially frustrating. One employee was consistently rude to guests, rushing people with "next order" before they were finished speaking. When items were unavailable, she would not offer alternatives or explain, and guests were sometimes left with incomplete food. Several guests commented about her attitude while waiting in line, so this was not just our personal experience.
The dining room timing was also extremely frustrating. Dinner was often two to two and a half hours. There were times we waited nearly 20 minutes just to be greeted, waited long periods between courses, and then struggled to find our server when we were ready to leave. The slow service caused us to miss shows and limited our time to enjoy the ship.
The condition of the ship was disappointing as well. We noticed rust throughout the ship, dirty glass and rails that appeared unchanged for days, and a general lack of upkeep compared with other cruise lines we have sailed.
Our stateroom cleanliness was also concerning. The same pieces of hair weave remained on the carpet throughout the cruise. When we arrived, I wiped down the bathroom and high-touch areas with Lysol wipes, including areas where there appeared to be small drops of blood. The wipes came away gray and rust-colored after cleaning.
We did attempt to address concerns with Guest Services, but that experience was also disappointing. We waited on hold for almost 45 minutes before being disconnected. When we went downstairs and explained what happened, the response was simply, "OK." There was no apology or attempt to assist.
The crew members who went above and beyond truly made a difference, and we appreciate them. Jamal, Camp Ocean, the Bimini shuttle driver, and the waitress who helped with the hidden ducks are examples of the kindness that can make a vacation memorable.
However, the overall Carnival Sunshine experience fell short because of the food quality, long wait times, service issues, smoke odors, cleanliness concerns, and the condition of the ship. read more
