I really like the city of Dubuque. It's beautiful and it's next to a river. It's old and sleepy and reminds me of the city that time forgot. It has some pretty old buildings and the nice relaxed feel to it. Unfortunately there are a lot of homeless people and there is a drug problem here. It's noticeable in several areas close to downtown. The fact that they have an excellent Gyro in town and a lot of pretty scenery combines with the negative elements to equal four stars. Now I need to go to the library and borrow some buques.

There…read morewas a great banned book section and the saleslady showed us an interesting website that explains why (or at least the supposed reason) books were banned. They had a nice selection of books for all ages. A balance of best sellers, classics, and other books. To find such a gem in a small town in Iowa (without a big college) was a treat.

We brought son #3 here for a college visit, so I can only review that process. Some colleges have…read moredays with big open houses, but we scheduled our own visit. We went to the admissions office and there was a group of 3 other perspective students with parents waiting and then we started on our tour of the campus. The tour was very thorough and then we met with someone in the business department and their admissions department. Loras has the Lynch Learning Center which is a great resource if you have student with special needs which is our case. It's designed to give your student the extra help they need in the college setting. Not many schools have that at the level they do. The visit was very thorough and we enjoyed the drive from the Chicago area to Dubuque. At this point, it's another potential school on the list, so who knows if we will be visiting it much more in the future.
