The class comes with the Tombow dual pack pens (hard and soft brush), a personalized dot grid notebook and the beginner's guide to modern calligraphy that you can take home and practice after class. She also includes a drink ticket which can be redeemed for booze or non-alcoholic drinks. Kimberly was super detailed in explaining some of the jargon used in modern calligraphy. She made it simple and easy to understand. She went they the 10 basic strokes step by step and had us practice while we followed along. After we got some of the basics down, she taught us the lower-case alphabet. The class is great - lots of examples and hands-on practice. She also goes around and helps adjust the angles of your brush and hand and gives out pointers. The Location: The Newton (inside the Changing Hand's book store) One of the first things that Kimberly said in class was that she doesn't pick locations that don't serve booze. Some times you need a little liquid courage to numb that "perfectionist" mentality. Loved the location. It had a parking lot (free) and restrooms right around the corner. It's on the other side of the bar inside the Changjng Hand's bookstore - which serve coffees, teas and booze. I highly recommend this class to anyone's that's interested in learning. Kimberly is high energy and is super positive! She never makes you feel bad and is a great instructor.

They seemed to be running around like they were understaffed, but I am not sure. Our class was scheduled to start at 7:30, but it didn't get started until right after 8pm. I'm all for giving people a few extra minutes to come in and get settled, but 30 plus minutes is a bit much for a scheduled class. We were rushed the entire time and had 30 minutes less to complete our paintings. Overall I enjoyed myself because I like painting, but I'm not sure I would go back if the experience would end up being similar. I sat next to a drunk couple and did not get to finish my painting fully. The drunk couple sucked, but I understand we can't control how others act when drinking, but we can definitely control when the class starts and being set up better.

As someone with a disability who is also a creative, there's no question I resonate with ArtMix's…read moremission to transform the lives of people with and without disabilities through the creation of art. ArtMix is an Indianapolis-based non-profit organization that has been in existence since I was a kid in school, though it began life as Very Special Arts. They have four core programs, a variety of special projects, and quite a few opportunities to support them ranging from visiting their art gallery to joining them for First Fridays and others. As they note on their website, in the early days of public education for those with disabilities it was uncommon for us to be integrated into regular classrooms. An organization like this was used to fill in that gap. While I was often discouraged from creativity, this was an organization that encouraged it. The fact that I'm now a published writer, film critic, producer, and occasional actor is proof positive of how positive their influence can be. It should be noted that shopping in their gallery is by appointment only. Like a lot of non-profits, they have a small staff. The core programs for ArtMix include urban artisans, entrepreneur artisans, community classes, and artists-in-residence. In terms of accessibility, despite being in a challenging building they do well with ramps at the back entrance (and free parking in the back lot). The building itself is locked - there's a call box that you'll use (again, they request appointments). First Friday events are cool, the gallery is wonderful (and does support artists with disabilities. Yay.). I'm very pleased with this organization. It's only gotten better over the years. While I'm no longer that student sitting in a classroom, ArtMix reaches out even more these days and is truly a community organization. If you've never checked them out, I definitely recommend it.

I went for the second year to their holiday open house to do my yearly ornament shopping for family and friends. There are beautiful, one-of-a-kind ornaments, plates, bowls, and other ceramic pieces. All of the pieces are carefully made by the artists, fired on-site, and then made available in their gallery. I have been thrilled by the items I've purchased and the recipients love them!

When we arrived the instructor had set up everything for us and it was all ready to go. Our class was at Pivot Bar and Balcony at Hyatt Place (downtown ). As we painted we enjoyed some drinks. It was step-by-step class and was easy to follow. Instructor was so kind and helped us a lot too. Definitely a fun activity and I recommend it to everyone. Class lasted about 2.5 hours.

Yesterday's class featured a mug and plate making class where kids get to try their hand on the wheel and decorate their pottery with designs and paint. We hope they continue the series and we'd love to try other mediums through the JCC location down the road. I've noticed that Ripple Mobile Arts also offers private and adult group classes. Aside from the extreme heat required to sculpt and blow glass, my experience here was amazing! Lauren (I'm not sure if that is how she spells her name) lead our class and she was a great teacher. She smiled the entire time and didn't mind repeating the instructions for each and every student in the class as she lead us through the process of making our very own, uniquely designed, glass paperweight. I can't wait to see how ours turned out when I pick them up in two days. I'm already looking forward to taking another class, for glass blowing this time. Hopefully, Lauren will be there again. She had great energy, which made the process feel less intimidating and very fun.

We got to tour the facility, watch Emily make an entire vase live, and even created our own little Indiana shaped ornaments The space is really, really cool, filled with tons of amazing pieces. After watching a live glass blowing demonstration, I have a new appreciation for the skill and effort it takes to make glass. Apparently they also teach lots of classes, so you can learn to blow glass too! During the event we got to mingle with the staff and owners. Greg and Cynthia are super sweet people who made us feel warm and welcome I really can't say enough good things about this place. If you're interested in glass art or even just appreciate art in general, you won't be disappointed by what you find at GRT.
