Earlier this week we bought a Mazda SUV from CarMax. I think my hubs paid $125.00 to have it shipped/driven to the Huntsville store. He had been working with "Johnny" and needed me to insure the yet unseen car, in order to show the CM people both the insurance car and an insurance "binder." I've never had to show an insurance binder in my life. To take a check, we were supposed to show them our bank balance on my phone. I get that, because it was a Saturday and they likely could not verify the funds were available in our account, otherwise. Hubs said this was part of the "express" purchase process and would speed up the transactions and save time. There's nothing express about their "Express" experience. We arrived 3 minutes prior to our appointment and then waited 30 minutes with only the main guy in the front room greeting us and pointing to the waiting area. If I were Johnny, the sales guy, I would have greeted us personally and ensured we were comfortable and pointed that the car was in the heated bay, with a giant yellow (why yellow at Christmas time, I don't know) bow on the hood and made myself available for questions. Also, Johnny likes to text. That's fine; however, some issues are quickly rectified by talking with someone. I tried to call him the day before to understand his insurance requirements and he doesn't answer his phone. This is frustrating. The entire time we were waiting, our car was sitting right there in the bay. We were able to get in and look at and in the car, prior to getting a key. I wanted to ensure we had everything needed to change the tires and a passerby employee helped me with that, and he was very kind. I also wanted to see the spare tire and see if it was a donut or a full size and it was a donut and appeared to have some wear on it. I brought this to the ladies who checked us out and one assured me the repair team would call me Monday about the spare. Of course, no one did. I was disappointed to only get one key fob, also. I also had heartburn with the $499 CarMax processing fee (not required by law), which is fairly prominently displayed on signage on the wall. What exactly does this "fee" pay for? I saw numerous guys and gals sitting around on their cell phones. It would be a great place for the DOGE to implement some cutbacks. On the plus side, the ladies who checked us out were kind, polite and thorough. And, CarMax gives you a 10-day period in which you may return the vehicle. read more

We drove 50 miles to our appointment only for them to cut the offer by over 3,000 dollars due to odometer discrepancy-they apparently counted the miles we drove. I am 77 years old and don't appreciate someone thinking they could take advantage of me especially since,the round trip was aboutm100 miles. read more

In January 2023 I purchased a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek for my daughter to use in Philadelphia at college. After a month the car started not starting and or shut off after sputtering. We had it towed on 4 occasions to 2 different garages. The starter was replaced but it still had issues. Finally we had to get Subaru cooperate involved and a master technician with a Subaru dealership. Turns out the previous owner had a remote start, antitheft device installed and removed by, we can only assume CarMax, before they sold it to us. The wiring harness was spliced several times incorrectly resulting in it needing to be completely replaced. I would steer clear of this CarMax, or any CarMax if this is how they conduct business. If I could start a legal case against them I would because our repairs will cost over $3k for an entire wiring harness and labor. read more

Let me tell you the story of how my "iconic" experience crashed and burned. I'm not one to write any kind of bad review unless my experience is truly horrible so take that into consideration. I'll start with this. The sales person was absolutely awesome. He was patient and absolutely cared about getting me into the right vehicle. Sadly this is where my iconic experience crashed and burned. I went in and purchased a vehicle with Carmax and traded in my old one. Fast forward something like 28 days and I get hit with the car payment. No not for the new vehicle, the old one. The vehicle Carmax purchased from me. After being lied to by the associate over the phone at the business office, jerked around by the assistant business manager and getting the run around when asking to speak with the store's location GM I've all but given up. The negligence on the part of Carmax has cost me 2 car payments this month and it has absolutely shot me in the foot. I love the new vehicle don't get me wrong but I'd never go back to Huntsville Carmax ever again. If you can't afford to make 2 car payments then shop elsewhere. This is not the iconic experience at all. We kept in touch through texts. My husband & I came to test drive & trade in our other car. Michael had the jeep clean, out front so we could test drive it right away. Just purchased a 2024 Camry XLE from Carmax which was a pleasant experience compared to dealing with other dealers in the area who had more gimmicks to confuse the buyer such as significant sales price advertised but only to find out they made up the difference in an array of addons and/or increased dealer fees. Thus Carmax dealer fee of $499 was found to be the most reasonable if not the cheapest. Some dealers advertise an impressive sales price apparently to just get you on the lot...only to find out the good deal was no longer available....but they had replacement vehicles at a significantly price increase. Carmax also has a good warranty and will let you return the car if you don't like after a few days. Overall good buying experience from Carmax who deals in quality vehicles for sale. read more

So in the past, I've purchased two of my vehicles from CarMax, because I would stop by after work and walk around the lot and window shop. So now that I'm in the market for a new vehicle, I planned my normal routine of stopping by the lot after work. However, this time I was met with loud alarm, and a voice over the intercom scolding me and instructed me to get off the lot. Wow!! Really?! At first I thought to myself that times have changed, and one can't stroll through the car lots in the evening to avoid being hounded by sales reps. I was shopping for a new (2024) truck and planning to trade in my 2019 Lexus ES 350 Luxury with 29,000 miles on it. The Ford dealership where I was purchasing the new truck offered me $26,000 for my trade-in. Based on internet searches and KBB.com value, I decided that was too low. I went on-line and got an offer from Carvana of $29,000. I tried CarMax based on a friend's suggestion. CarMax offered $30,000. They were selling a pretty much identical vehicle advertised at $31,990 so offering $30,000 seemed fair. after taking my vehicle in, they inspected it and determined it was as I had described, they paid me the $30,000. No issues at all, no haggling. It was one of the best experiences I've had with an automobile dealer. read more

I paid to have a car transferred to Huntsville, AL and they wrecked it in route. The sales manager said they could expedite another car to their branch to make up for the error. 3 weeks later and no car has shown up and they stopped returning my calls. When I call they say they will check the status and call me back and every time they do not. All I wanted to know is if the car even existed and if they could locate it. They are terribly unresponsive and do not deserve your business. Who ever is running the Huntsville Branch needs to be fired as this used to be our one stop shop for vehicles. read more

I'm giving a 1 star review, because ZERO stars isn't an option. I have a pristine, low mileage, sports car. I went online to see what it was worth and at the end of filling out all info, was directed to Carmax with an initial offer of $20,500. I knew the car was worth more, and their business model is to buy at a price they can mark up for profit. But to avoid HASSLE I set an apointment to go in to have the offer adjusted. I had a number in mind, that if they hit, I'd sell it to them. Take a half day off work to drive the 45 minutes to their facility, only to be told they would not do business with me because I refused to wear a mask. At NO POINT in the very long process to get to this point was I notified that I'd be required to wear a mask. I don't believe in them, personally, so I don't wear them. There is currently NO mask mandate in Alabama. The employee actually SHOOK an open box of masks at me and said if I refused to wear a mask then they would not do business with me. That's fine. No problem. I wonder if they realize without people selling them their used cars that they HAVE no business. Ceases to exist. Called their corporate office to see if there was a work around, and was placed by Customer Service on hold for 30 minutes waiting on a supervisor. I'll just sell it to an individual for the amount they would have made as profit. Heck with these truly dumb companies who think virtue signaling is more important than money. read more

I just bought a nice 2004 BMW M3 which I believe was "re-conditioned" by this store. They did a great job on the cosmetics and did beautiful detailing work. The touch up seat dye job was somewhat lacking and came off as soon as I conditioned the seats (which the previous owner never did). Put no faith in the "125 point inspection." Like all other self-inspections, it's an inherent conflict of interest. The mechanical work was minimal. Basically all they did was change the oil and the rear differential fluid. It still needed: 1) oil leak diagnosis 2) cabin air filter 3) engine air filter 4) fuel filter 5) change dirty brake fluid 6) change old coolant 7) drive belt 8) AC belt 9) manual transmission fluid ("lifetime," my ass!) 10) parking brake adjustment...how do you miss that? There's also almost zero chance that they put in the correct $13 per liter oil that this car requires, so that also needs to come out ASAP. What I will say is that they saved both keys and the main owner's manual, but the case and the support manuals were gone. They also got the car on the truck and shipped it in a timely manner. Since you have a free 5 day return policy, my advice on a CarMax vehicle is not to buy it until you have an appointment set up with an independent mechanic that specializes in the brand of vehicle that you're considering. On the next day, take it in for a full inspection, which will cost you about $200. Insist that they document all of the defects that they encountered and take this list (like my list above) to CarMax . Once they have performed this work for free, you'll basically be getting your $200 back, plus serious peace of mind. read more

I recently purchased a vehicle from CarMax. I had never purchased a vehicle before. My two previous cars were gifts from my wonderful parents. But, after a year of searching I finally found that perfect car at that perfect price. CarMax was the one who had it. A beautiful and difficult-to-find 2011 Mustang GT California Special was sitting on a lot in Dayton, OH, just waiting for me. Dayton, OH? What? Yeah. Freakin' Ohio! I mean, who goes there? Not me. Luckily CarMax has a great little system worked out where you can transfer a car from another dealer for a reasonable fee depending on the distance between the dealerships. For me it was $249 to transfer my attainable dream car to Huntsville. Book it! Now, read this part because this is the local info. If you call up CarMax and a woman named LaToya answers the phone, hang up and call back later! LaToya was my salesperson and she was not stellar. In her defense, she is part-time. She's not there everyday and isn't there the full day when she is there. Having said that, I still felt she was a bit flaky and just seemed undedicated to the sale. She was frequently unplugged from what was happening with my transfer. Frequently I was told things like "I don't know what is taking so long," or "It will be here on Friday." It arrived on a Monday and she had no idea why it wasn't there on Friday, she wasn't even in the office on that Friday it was supposed to arrive. Really? In the end I got the car and I am thrilled with it, but the 14-day maximum possible transfer time turned out to be 21 days! When you're waiting for your attainable dream car, an extra week is a long, painful wait especially when you question the ability and dedication of person responsible for you attaining that dream. Her redeeming quality is she's a friendly person. She was easy to work with once I was able to get in touch with her, it was just getting in touch with her that was difficult. When the day finally arrived, I was in and out with my new car in under two hours. There are no hidden fees, just a simple CarMax fee and you're out the door. My final tip? They can remove that ugly CarMax decal and will if you ask them to. So if you don't want to advertise the dealership (and why would you?) ask them to remove it. 4 stars for CarMax the company, 2 stars for LaToya the local salesperson = 3 stars for CarMax Huntsville. read more

After waiting over a month to get my vehicle because of shipping error on Carmax's part, I arrived on a Saturday morning to purchase my car with a mix of financing and credit card. I disclosed to the salesman prior that I would be using my credit card to put a down payment down, with no qualms. After receiving my financing check, I went down to pay for my car and they stated they wouldn't accept a credit card for a down payment and suggested I come up with $1900 on the spot. They stated a credit card could not be used as "a loan cannot be used to cover a loan", which is crap. In reality CARMAX is simply being cheap and not wanting to pay for credit card fees. I came to test drive a transfer vehicle and didn't have insurance on me but never got the option to even look at the vehicle. I called to express my concerns and was told there was no manager on duty and they would call me back. CarMax of Huntsville needs to follow through. Put a van on hold to be transferred. Shalisa told me they would call to schedule the transfer and they never called. I made it a point to call 2 hours after they didn't. I talked to Ricky and he started the transfer for me and was told that another call would take place after 12:30 to pay for the transfer. I never received the call. Finally called myself at 6:00 and was then told that because I didn't pay for it on the first phone call (where I wasn't told to pay for it but was told someone else would call me) that someone else had bought it and it was no longer available. After searching for a couple months through various online and local dealership sites for the exact vehicle that I wanted, CarMax had what I was looking for in North Carolina and shipped the vehicle to Huntsville in about a week. When I arrived at the CarMax to view and test drive the vehicle, I was quickly greeted and within just under two hours, was already on my way home with the vehicle. CarMax made the car buying process exceptionally easy and fast, and given that the car was exactly what I wanted, I was willing to accept that CarMax charges a little more than other dealers do, since I got the car I wanted in the right condition and it was shipped here as opposed to having to drive 3 hours or more. I also appreciate the ease with which the finance team made dropping off a check from my bank and changing out the loan paperwork since my bank happened to have a slightly better rate than what CarMax could offer. I've never had a more hassle-free car buying experience. The only thing I don't like is that CarMax wouldn't allow me to take the vehicle to get a pre-purchase inspection elsewhere - they rely on their 7-day return policy to allow customers to do that. I did take the vehicle elsewhere after buying and the vehicle was found to be pristine. read more

We purchased a vehicle a couple years ago from the Huntsville lot, the deal was good, but we have bought a 2020 model, and traded the vehicle from CarMax in, when the dealer ran a Carfax on it, we discovered that the Carmax vehicle had been wrecked and we were not advised of this during the purchase, so it cost me several thousand dollars because of this. I traded a well taken vehicle in, all the bells and whistles. I bought a 2016 rouge. I have problems from the beginning and still a year and a half later trying to get them fixed. We bought the best extended warranty they offer. Carmax is a money pit. Found out the car was wrecked and Carmax repaired it and left handprints in the buffing after the paint job that started showing up. I have purchased 4 cars from the local Huntsville CarMax in the last three years. My wife and I went in to purchase a new truck that we had transferred down from Georgia. The entire experience has changed from very positive and efficient into one where it feels very adversarial and anti-customer friendly. The sales rep we used was new and unfamiliar with processes and was very sexist. He refused to listen when I constantly told him that my wife wanted to test drive the truck and was also co-signing the loan. He only answered questions to me, even when my wife asked direct questions. At one point, he asked to see our loan amount. He insisted we log into our bank and show him on our phone. When we stated we didn't want to use that method because it also shows all our bank account info, he got a manager, who was very rude, defensive, etc.. He insisted we could only proceed if we showed him our information on our phone and even folded over a document that stated at least two other methods they could use to get this information directly from the bank. He instead tried to hide those methods from us and put all the pressure on us, rather than take the approach where he could call and get that info. himself. We eventually got the truck after many hours of waiting. I will honestly never buy another vehicle from Carmax given the experience we had. They've basically become the "used car sales" dealer that represents the worst of the industry. Treating everyone as adversaries rather than customers, sacrificing customer service for laziness and treating people like they can't afford the vehicles they're trying to buy. Just bought a Ford Escape. Everything was going fine until we went to pay. We were able to get an interest rate at our own bank for half what they said was their lowest, so definitely shop around for better. Then they said there was a lien on our trade in and could not buy it. We spent two days and a lot of cussing at our old lender to finally get a new title sent. When we go to check out, they see the original title we had and then said "oh that one will work". Really?! Two days later we hear noise from the from left brake. I look at the rotors (I know I should have done this first, stupid me for trusting their "certification process") and they are severely grooved. Didn't have to touch them, you could see the entire surface grooved out something awful. My wife takes it in this morning and they say that in their certification process they measure the thickness of the rotor and if in spec, they call it good, but the massive grooves were ok. My wife calls me and I advise her to go back. They then say they will turn the rotors and replace them if after the resurfacing they were out of spec. I really think the guy that told my wife that they were ok was taking advantage. Come on man, grooved rotors are not "normal" and if you think so, you should not be a mechanic. They said they would replace the pads too. Well of course you will, they'll be grooved too! Very frustrated so far. I will update with the outcome to be fair, but at this point I cannot trust anything at all that they say. Hopefully they can make this right. Edit: BTW Cam, our salesperson was awesome. They are replacing the rotors, pads and checking alignment. Yeah, the ones they said were fine. read more

She had the vehicle transferred to Huntsville at no charge, but alas it was not what I needed upon inspection. Still she maintained a great attitude and provided top shelf service through out. My experience with CarMax was definitely an experience indeed. After I viewed various vehicles on the lot, I finally decided on "the one." I then proceeded to obtain a bill of sale in which I needed to provide for my bank in order to purchase the car. I had the money in hand as I was on my way to purchase the vehicle when suddenly, I received a call that the vehicle was no longer available. It was a huge bummer and the news came to me as a total shock. Although I was a bit frustrated, I will say that the management team at CarMax in Huntsville worked tirelessly to provide me with the same vehicle, even if it was at a different CarMax location. Then suddenly, what seemed like by the grace of God, the car became available again. I immediately purchased the car and I've been ecstatic about my purchase ever since! Although this was a huge mishap, my family and I appreciate the CarMax team (more specifically Jimmy and Pattie) for their professionalism and accommodating efforts. Don't let them check their options, they are all ridiculously high, and it just dings your credit rating. I financed through a credit union for a very low rate. The 2013 Lexus we bought on Jan. 30 is the third car we have purchased through Carmax. We saved around $17,000 by getting a used vehicle as opposed to a new version of the same.
