This is the kind of restaurant one wants to find while travelling. We've been on a Road Trip…read morethrough Spain and Portugal for several weeks. And this place here is one that we will remember for a long long time. It's a fantastic restaurant with a big list of wonderful items. Also daily specials like Paella or Lobster. As well as many small plates. Since there's wasn't any Paella on the menu that day we decided to go for the fresh Lobster in rice. And what a great choice that was. Simply the best Lobster we've ever had....and we quite had some. It was similar to a Paella. A whole Lobster cooked in amazing seafood broth and rice. At first the dish is more soup-like, until the hot pan thickens the broth and it becomes more like a Paella. Cooking lobster seems easy, but it's hard to cook it to perfection. But that's what it was here: Perfection. Fresh as well too....you can see them alive and swimming inside the restaurant. We were so thrilled with that dish that we ordered it again on our third night here. But on the second night we ordered a bunch of small plates: - Razor Clams (fresh, great oil and herbs) - grilled/salter peppers (right balance between spicy and salty) - Scallops (nice sized) - Two whole Crabs (juicy, tender, fresh) - Anchovies in oil (good quality, oil as well) - Fries with cheese on top (can't go wrong with cheesy fries) Always a bottle of wine with. Including ice cooler. This place here is really outstanding all around. Treated us like family, always a warm welcome, even though most customers were locals, which was very nice. Friendly folks, lots of regulars that came every night. Our dog was welcome here as well, which was nice. Prices fair, never paid more than 50 Euros for everything. Lobster with rice (feeds two) only 35 Euros. Freshness is key....and everything here was perfectly fresh and perfectly cooked. One of the really great meals we've had this year.

This was a major pleasant surprise for us. We just had great snacks and drinks, but someone said,…read morenow is the time for real food. The local reviews were great, so we wandered in search of La Mulata (it's named after a kind of crab). It is quite far from the main waterfront and it is in an unlikely spot inside a collection of stores. When you enter, you think that you are just in a seafood market as there are chairs and the bounty of Santander is right there for you to see. But then you are escorted to the back and there is this wonderful private spot with white table clothes. We had no idea what to expect as this is a truly local spot, there weren't any English menus as far as the eye could see. Still, we were put in the good hands of the place and she rattled off a host of things and we just nodded and said yes. Boy, are we glad that we did. The prices are incredibly reasonable (like the rest of Santander compared with the tourist prices of say San Sebastian), but the quality is incredible. This place prides itself on great fish and plenty of it. We started with a great appetizer of shrimp and then we had some terrific stew that was so rich and wonderful. The best thing was the whole seabass though. We each had a portion and they were delicious and flavorful. So if you are in Santander and have an appetite this is the perfect place.
