We had my mother's COL there in September. They make it very easy to book the hall. I was told we could set up at a certain time but got a call in the morning that we could come anytime (a couple of hours earlier than planned) which was so helpful in setting up. Stress-free and the bartender (I forget his name) was super nice and helpful. read more

I've been a member of Post 34 for a couple of years now and there have been significant improvements and upgrades made in the last year especially. Management has made great efforts to address previous issues, changed personnel, upgrade furniture and more to make it a great place to hang out with friends, or rent a clean affordable space for your larger gatherings. Ok since everyone obviously didn't understand my previous review. I ended up giving the legion 4 stars for many reasons and it has nothing to do with people or vets or whoever, I don't remember that being a part of the original. I came to the legion not for their hospitality but to celebrate a private family event and this review is solely a review of MY own experience. 1. Cheap drinks. $3 for a tall vodka tonic is unheard of. Barlady was great, friendly and greeted me with "this is the american legion we ain't got nothing fancy" to which i responded "do i look fancy? The cheaper the better, I like it to burn!" - True story 2. The interior was dark and dreary, not what I would expect from seeing it from the outside, just more run down that I would have thought. Really, I wouldn't expect anything fancy, especially from my family who needed a place for a large amount of people, are we ok so far? I mean.. 4 stars! 3. While its said that this is a private post, apparently it is not since breakfast is served on Sunday's, plus the post was reserved for a few family/friend events who where the ONLY people that I really came in contact with, if I am reviewing people, that means i am reviewing my family...but Im not..remember Im still a fan! 4. I have been to 2 other legions, for a total of 3, again for private functions. I was surprised that this one was "less maintained' as the others. I have lived in Plaistow for 20 years and would not expect that of my town, yes...the town I grew up in. 5. I was shocked to see smoking, not because it is a 'private' establishment, but because last time I ate in NH restaurant I was asked "smoking or non" and frankly that doesn't happen in Boston. Now, while I am honored to have a photo of myself hanging throughout, I do find it a little creepy and stalkerish, all I can do is hope and thank goodness that I no longer have to deal with people like this anymore. read more

OVERBOOKED THE VENUE. EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED!! Over a month ago I set up an event through one of the bartenders that works at this Legion. I was renting the hall a month in advance for my boyfriend's 30th surprise birthday. The woman I spoke with told me it was a $250 deposit for non members to rent the hall. Fine. I dropped off the money the next day to the bartender. He took my money and I went on my way. This past month I had been calling off and on just with different questions about the venue (if they had an oven, what time I could come set up, etc). I get to the venue yesterday to set up at 12pm for a 6pm party and they already had ANOTHER party setting up in the event center that I rented. I was visibly upset so after 20 minutes on the phone with the manager of the Legion they were going to allow me to use the downstairs in the member section and set up there, in the smokey dingy bar area. As I'm standing around debating whether to stay or try my luck finding a non occupied hall for the night the bartender received a call from the manager taking back what was previously stated that I could use the entire down stairs and that I could no longer do that and i could only use a small sectioned off area which looked like it was used for poker table storage on the backside of the bar because they had a raffle going on at 4pm. I took my money back and got lucky finding another hall within that same hour. Do not book with this Legion. It is run down inside and the management of this venue is CLEARLY not happening. read more

My daughter's baby shower was booked from months, 3 days before the shower my daughter's boyfriend gets a call they gave the room to a "member" and he was being moved to the bar. The bar was filthy, old and rundown. It smelled like cigarettes.and was generally disgusting. My husband had to ask member at the bar to not smoke during the shower. Yes there were members sitting at the bar during the baby shower. There was not enough seating for the 75+ people that attended. Many of the young guys stood the entire time. Unbelievable! I believe that man moved the event booked by my daughter's boyfriend, a young black man. out of disrespect and prejudice. He wasn't offered a refund until he asked and it was miniscule. I was so pissed when I got to the hall. They were rude and very indifferent to my daughter's boyfriend. I hated it. I can not adequately express my outrage. I will NEVER have any event in that vile place. It's been three years since the event, I still fume about it when it comes up in discussion. read more
