The food was delicious, the chicken salad on petite croissants was excellent. Then she had two other finger sandwiches of egg salad on marbled pumpernickel and Ricotta and cucumber on wheat that were also excellent. We had penne pasta salad with roasted tomatoes, asparagus and artichokes with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and a chopped Romain salad with blueberries, grapes and goat cheese with a lemon vinaigrette that was soooo yummy. We had a reservation, and we showed up about 5 minutes early, but then 2 other parties of 2 who arrived after us were seated before us even though one of them was a walk in. They were both seated at 4 tops, so I was thinking maybe that's why we didn't get those tables, but when we were finally seated we also got a 4-top. We waited about 20 minutes before I finally asked the host, and then they seated us at the next table that was bussed. Our table was a little tucked away around a corner where you couldn't see it from the entrance. Now, growing up as a person of color, I'm more inclined to notice when I'm the only person of color in a space than most white people I've met are. So, I noticed almost immediately that all the white people who arrived after us were sat before us in very visible tables and then I (the lone brown person) was sat around the corner away from the entry. Now, I don't know these people, so I have absolutely no reason to think that this was intentional, but I need them to realize how it might look. You have to be cognizant of things like that. Even if they just forgot to seat us and the hidden table happened to be the next available, it looked very bad. Now, the server who was assigned to us was awesome. We told her we were in town for Rockville and we all talked about music. She was super nice and attentive. For food, I got the catch of the day grilled with grits and mashed potatoes. When I ordered this, I don't think I imagined how unappetizing it would look. Nevertheless, the fish was well cooked, but I found myself wishing that the grits were a little cheesier, the potatoes were a little smoother, and the fish had a sauce. It was a very drab plate both visually and from a flavor perspective. My companion got the francaise with scallops. It was good, but not enough to fill him up (which we would've expected from the price). So would I go back here? Probably not. I think that this place is kind of overrated, possible because there aren't a lot of nicer options in Daytona. Prices are either competitive or high, but to be fair, the quality of the meat is definitely there and they make their own sausages and grind their own ground beef in house. In a corner, kind of obscured by shadows is their deli where you can get your cold cuts or have a sandwich made for you. They also have pre-made dinners for you to bring home. They also offer sauces and spices. Some of the spices also bear the name of Ray's Quality Meats. They either make them themselves (or just private label them). I also commend them on their longevity especially considering they ate on Route 1 in a part of Ormond Beach where many of the businesses stay closed with the exception of Bike Week and Biketoberfest. The rest of the year it is more akin to a ghost town than a community. Fifty years is a long time to be in business. But with a quality product served in a friendly and professional manner, it is not only easy to see why Ray's Quality Meats has been around so long, but you find yourself cheering for them to last another fifty years or better.
