I joined the ladies team when I first moved to Cardiff and was a bit nervous about joining a team when I didn't know anyone and wasn't very fit. As it happened I was made to feel very welcome and there were people of mixed abilities so I didn't feel out of my league. They also have a good social life and mix with the other members and hold lost of events. Good way of getting to know people and lots of fun to be had.

Varsity is the sports tournament held between Cardiff University and Swansea Univeristy. It…read morecomprises of many many different sports but the main match, the one that everyone wants a ticket to see, is the rugby match. Swansea have dominated this event in the past (though I hear that Cardiff have consistently one the tournament overall; a little piece of information that isn't bandied around Swansea's support pages on Facebook) but Cardiff have been victorious for the last two years. This year, though, it's taking place in Swansea after two years in Cardiff. It normally alternates and I don't know why it stuck in Cardiff twice in a row. Can Cardiff continue their winning streak as they play away? I'm going to be specifically writing about the rugby match at Cardiff Arms Park. The whole event is incredible. If you've ever seen a rugby match in the stadium, you'll know what I mean. The swearing, the passion, the anger, but also the friendliness, the joshing. No one really gets violent even though alcohol is flowing VERY freely. At half time the cheerleaders from each side perform for about 2 minutes each - hopefully to the cries of amazement from the crowd! fingers crossed for this year... - and then it's back to the rugby. The atmosphere is intense and exciting and you will most definitely scream yourself hoarse. But there's nothing like it for making you feel close and involved with your university. P.S. Let's go, Cardiff, let's go!

I have been to this and the day normally consists of a lot of drinking, putting on the relevant team t-shirt and painting your face up so that you look a bit like a div. It is all very enjoyable though, even if you don't enjoy rugby. The atmosphere is immense, packing out the stadium with students cheering on their teams. Tickets are about £8, well worth it I say. This year it is rumoured that Varsity will be taking place in the Millennium stadium, definitely a step up from Cardiff Arms park, but I do fear how empty it might be seeming as this is a large venue for a student game....

Softball is a great summer sport that is perfectly aimed at those who like to be active and…read moresocialise at the same time! The Cardiff league has been running now since 2006 and is made up of 8 teams that play from April through to August at Llandaff fields and Pontanna Fields. The league plays the co-ed slowpitch version of the game, teams are equally mixed between male and female players and the ball is pitched under arm. While at first glance the game my seem complicated, it is very easy to start playing and before long become addicted! I have been playing for many years and when the clocks change to BST (British Softball Time) I know it is time to get the glove out for Spring training. The league is a very friendly bunch of people, they always welcome new player to the league.
