Our family did a 30-minute session at Oneloa Beach on Maui and had a great experience. My family of 6 wanted to get family photos when we were staying in West Maui. Looked around for places, and Capture Aloha was: - Well-reviewed - Well-priced - Willing to provide us with digital-only pictures. I filled out the form on the website to request a quote, and engaged in an email dialog with Becky, who was super helpful. She helped us to pick a date, time, and location (we wanted sunset beach photos and booked a one-hour sunset session). After paying a small deposit we received a more-detailed confirmation with a map to the photo location and the name and phone number of our photographer, as well as an exact meeting time. Well, the day came, and the weather was iffy midday. Our photographer contacted us and suggested we push it by a day based on the wind and the height of the surf (Maui weather reports are somewhat unreliable). We agreed, and appreciated this level of care - helping us to get the best conditions possible for our family photos (and I'm so glad this happened, because the next day was the best sunset of all the days we were on Maui). We arrived at Kapalua Beach at the agreed-upon date and time and met our photographer, Jelena. Jelena was FANTASTIC. Her demeanor, her vibe, the way she worked with all of us and kept us smiling and laughing, suggesting excellent poses... our family photo session was actually very fun and memorable. Jelena, if you read this, you are great at what you do, and we appreciate you very much. Once the session was finished, we paid the balance right there on a Square reader (along with a well-deserved tip), and we were all done with a promise of delivery within 10 days after basic editing and cleanup. We got them delivered via email 9 days after the session. Since photographer reviews really come down to the pictures, let's talk about them. They are incredible. The Maui sunset from behind combined with a camera flash from the front combine to create this surreal lighting that's downright magical. Jelena was so fun and got us posing great poses and smiling great smiles, and the location is beautiful beyond words. These are great pictures. Looking at them instantly sparks memories of our awesome vacation. They're already on all our desktop backgrounds and phones (and the kids are instagramming them). Do not book Jelena! No dependable. She cancelled our session less than one hour before it was to begin saying she had been sick all day even though she had been texting with me earlier in the day about the location!! I had booked Jelena for a family photo shoot during our time in Maui. We planned our day around the shoot in the evening because I have a 6yr old, 4yr old and a 2 month old. We left the beach early, I got a blow out for my curly frizzy hair, and we made the kids rest in the late afternoon so they wouldn't be too tired. Jelena texted with me int he afternoon about our location so I thought we were all set. Then less than an hour before our session, after we were all basically dressed and getting ready to go, she texts me saying she hasn't been feeling well all day and cancelled! When I asked if she has a back up or another photographer she can send, she told me is the only photographer on the island! I wanted to write this review to point out how not only do they have great photographers but, their customer service goes above and beyond. My computer recently crashed and I lost all of the photos from our session. I emailed Becky with not much hope of being able to get another copy of our session. You will be working with a company that hires 2-3 photographers. That means the work you like on here is not a good indication of the work of your assigned photographer. Strongly dislike that. I have worked with photographers to get family photos taken in Honolulu, Rome, London, Paris..etc and have always been able to make my choice based on the photographer's entire portfolio. I had to hunt down the work of the photographers on their blog and it's just not enough photos to give me a comprehensive review. To respond to the owner's comments below - There was no overcast that day. The photos taken at the very end were the backdrop I liked, I realized afterwards there were too few shots taken in that setting. The email correspondence is also another pain point. Replying to me rudely on emails like "your requested images were already in the folder the day you asked" when they didn't update me they were there and made me wait for a few days while being radio silent. Unacceptable and unnecessary attitude. They were the first photographer to just assign me a location to meet up without engaging in any discussion on my preference of setting. Pretty crazy what they said here in Yelp comments. You know how you can find out how to better my experience? You could've actually asked me that in our direct email correspondence. I went to Hawaii with my girlfriend and her family for our annual summer vacation.
