Several groups who walked in nearly right after us were turned away. We wanted to try the local dish alcatra and were told this was the place to do it! WHAT. AN. EXPERIENCE…read more Fresh, high-quality food, a warm and genuinely homey atmosphere, and some of the most attentive service we experienced in the Azores. This family-style restaurant is easily one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The experience starts the moment you walk in. On the way to your table, you stop by the wine wall and choose what you'd like to drink. There's no traditional menu and only a limited selection of dishes, but that's part of what makes this place so special. Everything is focused on what's fresh and available that day. We were a group of 10, which worked perfectly because we were able to order and share practically everything they had. We had **fresh-caught fried swordfish with potatoes**, beautifully crisp on the outside while remaining tender and delicate inside. The **grilled octopus with vegetables** was another standout--simple, fresh, and cooked exactly right. We also tried the **fresh tuna**, a **ribeye with French fries and a fried egg on top**, and **duck with potatoes**. Every dish felt comforting and unpretentious, but the quality of the ingredients really spoke for itself. And after all that food, we finished with coffee--exactly the way you should end a long, leisurely Portuguese meal. What I loved most was that this didn't feel like a restaurant trying to impress you. It felt like being welcomed into someone's home and being fed incredibly well. No unnecessary frills, no complicated menu--just great ingredients, generous portions, family-style hospitality, and food made with care. Taberna Roberto deserves every bit of recognition it gets. If you're visiting São Miguel, this is one place I would absolutely make the trip for. One of those meals you remember long after the trip is over.

I don't know what I can say about Beira Mar... it is an absolute seafood lover's dream come true…read more Everything is caught that day from the lampas to the fish, ready to be prepared as you find suitable or let the chef and staff season it traditionally. The seafood soup/chowder/bisque bread bowl is a MUST, as it is foolishly cheap for what can be a whole meal for a person. Bread is baked fresh that day, in house. The fish can be done a few different ways, but best split and grilled (per our server's suggestion). There will be butter, there will be herbs, there will BE GARLIC!!! It's basically heaven from the wood or charcoal fired grills delivered straight to your table... after you have finished your soup/chowder and lampas of course (think mussels meet escargot). Reservations are almost a must here, as the locals love it as much as tourists do and even in the off-season we almost go turned away because we hadn't made a reservation. Buuuuuuuut, the staff and owner were sympathetic (we had just arrived and probably looked in rare form) so they sat us and we loved every bite of everything we got. Let the server guide you, once they know what you like they will put together an unforgettable meal for you. I wish we had been there when not raining and during the day so we could see the ocean and the open doors/windows of the patio and beyond. I dream of Beira still to this day... months later... as there are very few places like this in the states, which is just a damn shame tbh. If you are on the island this is 1 of 2 MUST visit places in my opinion. However, it is the ONE must when you figure in price-value proposition into ranking. Keep doing what you are doing, Beira Mar - you've set a ridiculously high bar for the Azores!

It's probably the best steak I've ever had. Frank, the spirited owner who REALLY has fun joking around with everyone, delivers you a cut of meat so tall and trim you'll think you're looking at a runway model. But unlike Gigi Hadid, this steak is served to you uncooked on a 500°F brick of volcanic stone. This steak is grilled for you, and mostly BY you, on the superhot slab right there at your table! Frank gets the cooking started for you, but you basically slice each bite onto the smoldering brick and hold it on there for a bit to cook it. It is such perfect beef that you can't mess it up. I also got the simple appetizer spread with two kinds of fresh bread, some cheese, olives, and cute little sausage bites. All of those were exceptionally good, except that the olives are the same kind you get at every restaurant on this island. Seriously, though, what an awesome dinner experience this was. Unless tender red meat is not your scene, you need to try this at least once if you're visiting the island.

Personally, the lax service was more my speed but may not be for everyone. I ordered the Bife à Canadinha and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this steak in cream sauce. The wine is cheap and flowing! All the options are well-priced by the bottle. An important note - we wanted to try wines from the island but Terceira mostly produces white wines, so ask about their reds if you're looking to pair it with your steak. Overall, delicious food, great vibe, and friendly people. It's worth a visit!
