They picked me up from the Alaskan ferry, about four miles out of town and brought me to the ferry when I was leaving the next day.

You know that Nicholas Sparks story where a guy and a girl meet at a bed and breakfast and fall in…read morelove... well, yeah me neither. That didn't happen but this is a beautiful historic home overlooking the ocean. A bed and breakfast is an interesting concept- like a hotel but more intimate (and hopefully you have good downstairs neighbors). Upon arrival, there was a handwritten note that listed breakfast time for the next day and instructions for room keys, which I thought was a little odd at first. The music coming from the house next door was a little much and kept a baby in the house awake well past 11:15. The room was a little different than the website had shown, as I was picturing an ocean view from my room but instead got someone's backyard and a dirt road. (One other thing that might've been helpful would be having a mirror in the bathroom instead of outside the bathroom door- for those of us that can't see without our contacts lol) Ali is just the sweetest inkeeper. Day one breakfast consisted of a shakshouka-like dish (with poached eggs in diced tomatoes), sugared blueberries on top of yogurt, grapefruit, orange juice and tea, kielbasa sausage, pastries, and toast. Day 2 was an egg bell pepper frittata with kielbasa and roasted tomatoes on the side, pastries, raspberry coffee cake, yogurt, and sliced melons. The third day was bacon and egg muffins (aka breakfast in a cup) and toast arranged with a nice garnish of green onion top, a patriotic yogurt with blueberries and strawberries, grapefuit- probably my most favorite breakfast and the recipe easy to replicate. It was also helpful to have a refrigerator and microwave available for use. The porch is great for sharing a cup of tea and a conversation. Breakfast guests were friendly and chatty and came from Germany and all sorts of different places. It helps to get a different perspective on things

We stayed at the House No. 1 B&B in Haynes, Alaska. The B&B is a historic home on a slight hill…read moreoverlooking the breathtaking harbor. The area where the B&B is located is very picturesque and probably the best place to stay in Haynes. The owner purchased the home last year and has been renovating it. The home is quite beautiful with high ceilings, large windows and beautiful hardwood floors. We met both the owner and innkeeper. Both were welcoming and helpful with suggestions about where to eat and making sure that all of our needs were met. I was traveling with my 20-year old son, and my 23 and 27-year-old daughters. We stayed in the two guest rooms on the first floor which have a shared bath. The bedrooms are quite large, one extremely large. The beds were very comfortable with crisp clean linens. The bathroom is recently renovated and spacious. Towels were plentiful. For breakfast, which is included in the rate, we had a choice of a continental breakfast and/or hot breakfast, which on this date consisted of egg frittata, wonderful breakfast sausages and bacon, as well as toast, Danish, yogurt with fruit, juice and coffee. The table was set beautifully by the way. All of this was prepared by the innkeeper. We were very pleased with everything about the B&B and would definitely stay there again.

But then management changed and the money came down, though the red-velvet bordello swing remains, up there by the balcony that overlooks the dance floor. Said floor is something like a well in its narrowness and depth, which has the effect (necessary to Haines, which does well to scrounge up a couple of dozen revelers on even the most momentous of occasions) of making seven or ten dancers seem like an enthusiastic crowd. But in fact, while the crowd may be an illusion, the enthusiasm is not, and it's more than the local brews dispensed from the bar crowded oddly up into the ceiling that maintains that joyful energy. Perhaps the cold rain that seems from the perspective of Fort Seward to be drenching the entire world is absorbed into the hearts of residents and springs forth, transmuted.

This place has really went downhill. The prices however have went up. We used to stay here all the…read moretime and up until last year it was fine. Where to start on this horrible stay. Well first of all the caretakers son could not check us in using their system involving an ipad and paypal. Seemed a bit sketchy right off the bat. Secondly the shower leaked water all over the shower house because the cement has shifted and the drain is now the high point. That is when you can get to the shower house as it is often blocked by the caretakers nasty looking dog. On the topic of the dog the caretakers advice was even though he is snarling and has his hair standing up just say his name and offer your arm as a sacrifice and you should be ok. Cabin beds were terrible and seem to have been infested as I sit here scratching. The kids are scratching too so I guess we now need to add a trip to the pharmacy to our vacation experience. And to top off this terrible stay I just recieved a snotty email accusing me of leaving a mess in the kitchen (which my wife cleaned spotlessly while I paced and fumed) and leaving a mess in the cabin. The mess in the cabin consisted of 3 empty beer bottles set on the counter (no recycling bin in the cabin) and the bedding rolled up and placed on the end of the bed so they could pretend to wash it as I went on a hunt for what was biting us. If you have to choose between this place and your car choose your car, or under a tree, or in a cardboard box. Can I select negative stars? We will never stay here again. Ever.
