Most of life I have been a reader but not so much the past few years. I always have at least one…read morestack of books that I want/intend to read but they haven't been moving much, the stack just gathers dust sadly. Recently a friend told me about the library's Libby app that is FREE where I can borrow audible books. I was excited about the prospect of "reading" in this new (for me) way. I tried to get things set up on my phone but was having some issues so I stopped in the the Ferndale Library. The staff there is over the top amazing. I wish I had gotten the name of the lady who helped me that day. Not only did she get me all set up on the Libby app, she anticipated my future questions and needs and I learned a lot! It took all of five minutes! Not only is the staff here awesome, Ferndale Library has got a great parking lot, is very inviting and there are so many new things to discover for example lots of other online resources! I'm the past few weeks I have "read" more books than I have in the past few years on the Libby app! So handy while walking dogs or even driving or doing chores! If you haven't been to the library in awhile, you might want to stop in and see what's new!!!

Driving to a small pull-off north of the Cattle Point Lighthouse on my way to Cattle Point I…read moreencountered a baby red fox in a ditch on the side of the road. I pulled over and rolled my window down and took a few pictures and a video. It tilted its head when I talked to it and it ran off when another vehicle drove by. Cattle Point is managed thru the Bureau of Land Management and is one of the features constituting the San Juan Islands National Monument. Some information about the area can be found on the San Juan Islands National Monument website in their Monument Site Catalog. The land abuts the Cattle Point Natural Resources Conservation Area run by the Department of Natural Resources. To the south is the Strait of Juan De Fuca. To the north is private land. I parked in the small pull-out by the trail leading to lighthouse. There are a few signs along the trail to the lighthouse with information about Cattle Point and its history and wildlife. I encountered four deer while I was here. Three grazing that made their way north and one grazer that made its way east and into the brush. The views are breathtaking and reminded me a bit of some of the views in the Outer Isles of Scotland. The cloudy sky made the walk enjoyable and I liked the backdrop of grey. Peaceful place to explore.

It would be wonderful if the library could also offer a weekly or daily story time for children, and it would be so helpful to keep longer hours, but I'm pleased for what we can get in this northern part of the city.

Super convenient location with plenty of parking and friendly staff. Be sure to check the hours as they are different from the main library and limited on certain days. Their friends of the library shop was well-stocked with good variety and labeling of different genres et. al. You pay via an honor box, change is available at the checkout/reference desk. A couple got engaged while I was there, and there was family and stealth photography. It was a bit distracting, but also charming. I read enough other times, so I was just mindlessly sketching some of the holiday decorations after gathering my haul from the friends of the library area.

What a gem! The San…read moreJuan Island Library way surpassed my hopes and expectations for a small rural library. Staff are friendly and helpful, there's a small fundraising area of used books where you can almost always find something interesting for a buck, parking is usually decent, the book selection is extensive and current, and there's a lot of community offerings like art classes, tai chi classes, a seed bank, and a walking group! Island residents are very lucky to have such a great resource.

Every tiny island should have a tiny little library. This one isn't as tiny as you would suspect,…read morebut it's just oozing with charm. I think my favorite part, truthfully, is the grounds. There's a flower-filled park and walkway from the road to the west, and a delightfully landscaped upper area surrounding the library itself. They also have a magazine dropoff so you can get rid of your old magazines here, which is kinda handy as well. It looks like there's a really good kid's section of books and plenty of books to fill the needs of the island, and I rather like the architecture of the building. Note that COVID has caused quite the commotion in the world of libraries, so you should probably call ahead to see if they have reopened, and what the protocol might be to get a book if you want one. I also am not sure about the requirements to check out books and get a membership.

They also sell blue Orcas Island Library mugs which are handmade exclusively for the library and are microwave and dishwasher safe. I own three.
