As far as liquor stores go, i think it's safe to say as long as they have the essentials and it's clean you pretty much have your bases covered. What made this one stand out to me though is that it had exactly what I was looking for. I had been searching for a specific rum all over CT now that not even total wine had (and they have everything) so I was pleasantly surprised when i found it. Even more so by how friendly the guy behind the counter was, he said if there was anything I ever wanted all I had to do was ask and he could get it for me, and that is exactly the type of customer service you can expect at this place. The layout itself is really nice, very well kept and clean, if you need cash theres an atm, and theres a bag policy too so make sure not to bring in a big bag unless you want to leave it at the counter. First and foremost, this store is very nice and I'll have to take pictures the next time I'm there since there aren't many on here! I've visited Capital Spirits a couple of times since they're pretty much the only liquor store Downtown (jazz fest, Pratt events, etc). Last night I was on Pratt to watch the Yard Goats game and we decided to go inside. The staff was super friendly and helpful, even when there was some indecisive minds in my group. I was able to find some pretty affordable sake, and the cashier even suggested some new and popular wines that they have, which I thought was nice. read more

I ordered a case of Pinot Noir wine from Capital Spirits for $30/bottle. They immediately charged my card, though didn't ship the case until a week later. When it arrived I found that they'd sent 12 bottles of grape juice. I ordered through Vivino. I opened a ticket at Vivino last week, but still haven't heard. If I don't get a refund by the end of this week, then I'll call my credit card company and reverse the charge. read more

Five stars from me, and four paws up from the Beloved Goldendoodle! We had just checked in at the Residence Inn around the corner, needed a little walk, and I had already read the reviews about them having some cool craft beers. I needed a beer - any cool beer! - from Wisconsin to make a beer cheese soup, and a terrific guy (wish I knew his name) led me right to a gigantic bottle of WI beer that is a collaboration with a Belgian brewery. OK, close enough, and I figured my boyfriend would also love it, so hybrid beer it is! I was blown away by this small place. Yes, it's very small, but they have an awesome selection of craft beer. Tons of local, FRESH IPAs, some of the better not as local ones as well (Lawson's, Industrial Arts). Good amount of sours, and others. Prices were all fair. Bourbon selection also good. My go to spot when I lived downtown, really the only pitfall is parking on Pratt street (almost never is any) but nonetheless was a convenient space with occasional tastings you could enjoy some spirits while shopping too. Always stocked with the latest releases of local beer too. read more

I just moved into Hartford from Terre Haute and was looking to restock on alcohol for the new pantry. My experience with liquor stores before this was one of a guarded but cordial experience with little conversation. I often just bought liquor at CVS or other non-specialist stores. When at the local CVS (which doesn't sell alcohol) I was recommended Capital Spirits by the clerk. A specialized liquor store, especially in the downtown of a big city and accessible by foot conjures images of a seedy back alley, unclean, with at least one alcoholic begging for change for "insert story here" outside. I was delighted to find that this was not the case. I walked into Capital Spirits early on a Friday morning, and took a little while walking around looking at the selection. The store was beautiful and the selections were easily browsed. When I asked for something specific, I was immediately led to it. I picked up some Laird's Applejack and started up really lovely conversation with the owner about what ways to prepare the drink for someone who hasn't had it before. This conversation then turned to beer; personally, I have been trying mostly in vain to get into drinking beer, as I'd like to share my husband's passion for it. Immediately I was guided through a selection of beers while asked questions about what flavors I liked in other food and drinks. After looking into several beers, I was recommended an Anderson Valley Cherry Gose. When I got around to pouring myself the Gose I found it immensely enjoyable, and I believe this is the first drink I was *happy* to continue drinking instead of slowly tolerating. Without this shops cordial, knowledgeable service, I would have never found this beer and I am quite excited to branch out and try new things from here. This is my new location of choice in Downtown Hartford, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area. read more

Total gamechanger. Porter21 is the only alcohol delivery service in Hartford County (soon expanding into New Haven!) and offers the perfect balance of convenience and a great selection. I had a few friends over after work on Friday and we decided to give Porter21 a try, ending up with two bottles of wine (JLohr chardonnay and cabernet, which I love) and Lawson's Sip Of Sunshine IPA, which hasn't been the easiest to find lately! So, instead of driving or calling around to different liquor stores, I literally clicked around on the site and had the beer delivered to my door in less than an hour. Open as of May 2015, the guys at Capital Spirits make shopping shopping for spirits, wines and beer in the heart of downtown Hartford a breeze. With so very few options to look towards when it comes to buying alcohol, I'm very excited for this new addition on Pratt St. On the smaller side, Capital Spirits has a decent selection in local and hard-to-find beers and really caters to a more personal shopping experience. You can build your own 6-pack too and prices are very reasonable. I was able to try some Ballast Point Sculpin and even find some Sip of Sunshine before it flew off the shelves With plans to hold tastings (beer/wine/bourbon) in the near future, follow their facebook page for updates. Good beer selection as well as other liquor , but the liquor is definitely on the expensive side here. Grey goose $63, you can get it elsewhere anytime for $57 all day everyday. Other liquids same thing. The beer is ok priced but I bought some and it was near expiration, so seems like not a lot of turnover of inventory!! I give them 3 stars for convenience and location as well as selection but negatives on price and inventory monitoring for freshness. Also, the front entrance could be a little refreshed. Capital Spirits has a really good selection, and I like the mixed 6 pack option, as I was able to try many different beers. My only qualm (and to me it's a pretty big one) was that I walked in, wasn't greeted, and I clearly looked lost and got no help. After looking around for a bit, I gave up and just asked for assistance, and they did help, but with three people behind the counter, someone should've said something when I walked through the door. I came out of my way to support a small business and to shop local, but probably would try a different shop before visiting Capital Spirits again. read more
