OMG, where do I start? The people, the people and the people. We all have our weird days, but the…read morestaff is always welcoming even on challenging days. The building and the facilities are seeing some aging, but the staff and the people care so much for this heart-beating community, they tend to it with TLC. The asset for this place are the people who truly care. Care enough to keep Seniors fit like you wouldn't believe. They have a cult following - such as the spinning classes - they FILL to the brim, very popular and starting early - 6am. Sign up if you want a spot, because they fill. Gym culture people, so expect everything you'd find in any gym - the groupies, the clicks, the jocks, the jokers, the primadonnas, the newbies, the really yelly-vocal-singing/dancy ones (moi for starters!), the "lost and found" folks, the "I'm the teachers pet" - the whole gamma. But with a twist - community and humanity - open arms (may not seem like that but they are a caring bunch of fit maniacs!). Same applies to the instructors who put SAFETY and FORM first (even if stubborn "old timers" don't like to be guided, SAFETY is #1 at EVERY YMCA!), with a good dose of great music, smiles and sweat. You'll find the drill sergeants, the prima donnas, the one who can squat to maloo more than ANYONE and will SHOW it, the motherly, the fatherly, the hyper, the serious, the joker, the singer, the actor, the zen master, the funky monkey, the cheerleader - all caring, well trained and prepared and they are happy you are here. Pool is a premium commodity so follow the rules and definitely book in advance. Plan your visit accordingly. YES equipment is old, and in process of replacement. Yet clean, well lit and welcoming. WIFI stinks... LOL! EVERYONE knows it, so don't get too frustrated. It's a tough location for wifi. The daycare is clean, open to view by the front desk, so you know there are loving eyes on the lil tykes continuously. And ALL YMCA staff worldwide go through EXTENSIVE training for their protection, safety and your peace-of-mind. The staff is caring, attentive and take great care of people. I should know! They impressed me so much that I asked to "work" there as a Zumba instructor. Granniehudson here, forever #granniehudsoneatsout is testing her toes in the Cape waters and hopefully will integrate within the community. But I don't speak as a new instructor trying to start over (MAN DO I MISS MY BOYLSTON AND WEST BOYLSTON SENIOR CENTER RENEGADES!), I would join anyway (I was in the process of joining when I just ASKED!). I speak as a client who's hub was so impressed he joined too (and he doesn't work out!). It's clean, and it's a community. I dance there at 7am on Tuesdays and Thursdays (for now, since the class JUST started - so come and see us!). If you belong to other YMCA's they will take you. So swing in for a visit. And say HI if I'm there! I'd love to YELP with you! Get your dance on (modify as you wish) before you hit the beach (and of course after your first cuppa joe).

Athletic staff seems ok, childcare is great, but front desk staff is consistently rude and…read moreunpleasant. On top of that, but family pool seems like it's always closed. They don't even apologize or really explain why they can't figure it out. If there were other options on Cape I'd definitely go there!

I didn't know much about this organization until I happened to be looking at different places. For…read moreinstance, I traveled in March to San Ignacio Lagoon and found out they were one of the organizations that was key to creating a sanctuary to protect gray whales which visit every year with their young. Then I kept finding more locations where they have been involved not just in protecting wild animals, but all kinds of other work. I've added them to the list of organizations I'll be contributing to on a yearly basis. They are also very responsive to emails.

IFAW started as a pressure group to expose the brutality of the seal hunts in Canada. Although…read morelimited seal hunting is still legal there--and they still beat baby seals over the head with sticks--IFAW's campaign not only brought world attention to the brutality of the hunting methods but also popularized a tactic for halting or altering other disgusting practices. It's easy; take pictures of brutality, and people can no longer deny it exists. People are notoriously forgetful and greedy, though; so action campaigns, especially those that deal with animals we don't see often, must often repeat themselves and reeducate new generations about the many ways we either intentionally or neglectfully destroy other species. Remember when the anti-fur campaigns of the '80s actually caused mink stoles to be less popular? Well, all you needed was Beyonce to wear fur a few years ago, and sales went way up. And then there were the fur-lined parkas that everyone started wearing a couple of years ago. Problem was, a bunch of that fur was dog fur. But like I said, people are forgetful and greedy. Their website is really informative, from both a political and scientific perspective. Their action campaigns are focused and specific and easy to understand.
