THIS IS WHAT KEYS LIVING IS ALL ABOUT…read more I've decided to post a couple outer sandbar Keys frequented by the locals, as it seems to be a recurring question that pops up by visitors. MARVIN KEY Longitude: -81.6445331 Latitude: 24.7115303 If you're wondering where all the locals disappear to on weekends, chances are if they know someone with a motor boat, they are at Marvin Key. This is a popular locals island and sandbar in the outback area off the lower Florida Keys. The only way to get here is by boat. Having had the opportunity to go here a few times already, it is absolute paradise. The sandbars are quite large around the island for walking, kayaking or just wading in the water with your beach chair and a beverage. You can also stroll along the shore with picture opportunities at every turn. Make sure you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, your noodles and even an umbrella if you plan on spending the day. It is not uncommon for waders to visit from boat to boat, so you just may meet some new friends along the way. The age range for visitors at Marvin Key is around 35 and up. The 35 and younger single crowd tend to migrate to Snipes Key which is in the general vicinity. Just like many of the other outback islands and sandbars around the Keys, knowing the area and navigation is crucial to avoid running aground, getting stuck, and most importantly, preventing damage to our reefs and ecosystem. If you choose to venture to this location, be sure to bring a local guide that knows the waters. We booked the half day snorkeling excursion for the two of us and our four children (14, 12, 8, and 7) and it was a picture perfect day in the water. Both our guides were friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable, not to mention incredibly patient as they fitted each of us up and made sure that the youngest were safe and able to enjoy the snorkeling as much as the older ones. Sweet Marla even snorkeled alongside our daughter and gave her the confidence to go out a second time alone. Great company, great boat, great snacks, great sea life! We can't wait to come back soon and do it again!

It's a park; not an overly impressive park, but a park nonetheless…read more At first glance all is okay here with amenities like: Tennis courts, bocce ball courts, sand volleyball court, basketball court, playground and plenty of open green area with benches and bbq grills ISSUES WITH THE PARK: --- Great park to bring your dog for a run or walk but hardly anyone picks up after their dogs. So if you want to play catch, frisbi or a good 'ol game of tag, you better watch your step in this mine-field of feces. --- Then again you don't really have to watch yourself while running around... because you are not allowed to "run" here. Apparently, the park has a "no running" rule. --- Bocce balls courts are in desperate need of repair. They're poorly built and in lieu of aggregate or alternate compacted base, they utilize cheap artificial turf (mini-golf putting green material) over plywood. The plywood is warped making the field of play all cocked and tilted. PARK RULES (as posted): --- PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES --- Do not use the playground during wet weather --- No ball playing --- No throwing sand --- No glass containers --- No running pushing or shoving --- Do not use the equipment when wet --- Use equipment properly First, "wet" concerns are noted two times (kinda redundant) Second, "NO BALL PLAYING" at a park? no ball playing, even though there is a bocce ball court, basketball court, tennis courts, volleyball court and all that open field. Thirdly, I can understand no sand throwing, pushing, shoving but NO RUNNING? No running... in a park? I just want to know how much the "rule makers" drank the night the rules were agreed upon. *** side note: this park is in Saddlebunch Key (mile marker 15) and not in Key West (Yelp does not recognize Saddlebunch Key, it automatically changes to Key West)

Without making a novel sized post, some of the myriad issues we faced included: -One of the heads (bathrooms) was backed up and they did not have the piece needed to fix it. *It smelled for all 4 days* and we could not use that half of the boat due to the smell. That means we went from everyone having plenty of space and 4 bedrooms and bathrooms, to cramming into 2 bedrooms on the other side of the boat. -There was no propane in the tank to use the kitchen oven and stove, and the backup canister was empty too. The grill had enough gas to get about halfway through cooking some chicken before it gave out. They didn't have tanks available to replace them so we couldn't use the kitchen or cook the groceries we bought. -We never got clear instructions on where to find the boat. We had to wander around the marina with all our luggage and groceries for 20 minutes before finding it ourselves. Eventually we were met by the guy checking us in, who was very friendly, but that doesn't help the fact that we were left without any useful instructions or guidance. The boat wasn't even in the slip that was indicated on our contract, we just happened to notice the name as we were passing it by. -The contract is long, convoluted and poorly written, including fees left and right for every little thing out of your control (even $50 per half hour you check in after 5pm - flight delayed? That'll cost you!). On top of that, it includes an image release stating they can use pictures of you in perpetuity in any form of advertisement they like. When I objected I was told they have used that contract for 10 years - as if the length you use a bad contract makes it as good contract. They did eventually assent to me making cross offs, but not until we were actually at the airport boarding our flight, wondering if we would have somewhere to stay. We alerted them to each of these issues as they arose, plus the fact that one of our party fell on the slippery stairs, which do not have a handrail, as they happened. I followed up with them after we departed and never got any type of response beyond that they were 'talking with the owner about it' and it was 'out of my [hands]' (on separate occasions). Finally, the $1000 deposit that they charged (via ACH, not a credit card hold) was not returned within the timeline I was promised. When I followed up I was told it had been returned 2 weeks prior and to follow up with my bank - it was probably "delayed because of the holidays". Well, my bank has no record of it (surprise!). ACH doesn't take 2 weeks to hit, even "during the holidays". I hope to update this with some good news eventually. For now, we've gotten none.
