Campbell Covered Bridge from the direction of parking lot path
    Callie T.

Though I've heard or seen photos of this Campbell's Covered Bridge, I had never visited this place before. It's part of Greenville County Rec. It's on the north end of Greer and is an ideal place to unplug from electronics, especially during this COVID-19 time with being on Zoom calls all-the-time. There's a gravel parking lot that you can immediately start on a 1/2 mile loop trail that takes you into the woods. On this hot, bright summer day, entering the canopy of trees allowed me to enjoy it's shade and feel the slight breeze, hear the chirping of birds and my own steps. The trail periodically brings you out into the open expanse, and if you need a break, there are benches to sit on. Following the trail, the sounds of water welcomes even more tranquility. I was the only one on this trail yet there were plenty of families in the water near the bridge. Sounds of laughter and screams from occasional slips most likely. There are benches along one side's upper bank and I chose to retrieve my packed snack of chilled cut-up watermelon and enjoy reading the Good Book and eating on one bench. Summer refreshing! I saw couples, both young and old walking or with their dog from the other side of Covered Bridge Road. I didn't go in that direction but good to know for future visit. One thing to note, there are no restrooms so plan accordingly, especially if you come with kids or have a tiny bladder like me. It's nothing fancy but the history behind this very last covered bridge and the fact the bridge shields the summer sunlight to the people below, a nice trail which has some seats periodically, free parking are reasons to visit. You can return for each season and take a photo with the iconic background.

I didn't realize until today that this is one of Greenville County's parks. Such a lovely place for photo ops, picnics, hiking, wading in the shallow water, or just relaxing. Some tables, grassy space, and benches are available for picnicking or resting after a hike. Definitely one of Greenville's historical treasures! Off the beaten path in north Greenville, but worth the drive.

The covered bridge from parking area. Just beautiful!

Gorgeous setting for this little slice of history! Pleasant drive out into the country ends in a surprisingly well maintained park! Plenty of parking in the lot above, where you can view the setting. Walk down a gently sloping paved path to the bridge, picnic tables and gentle stream. We so enjoyed our time here!

The last of its kind in South Carolina. The Campbell's Covered Bridge is a relic that is worth preserving and upkept through generations for its timeless mill history and local culture.

Everyone has their THING. Some yelpers really love writing about froyo shops, brunch spots, BBQ or yummy places for desserts. Others enjoy libraries and parks, while still other love all things Disney. As for me, I have a huge thing for bridges, particularly covered bridges and old railroad bridges. I may have missed my calling in life because there is something about these structures that just resonates with my soul. It's really a combination of two things that I hold in high regard - civil engineering and history. I can't begin to tell you just how much I daydream when I'm in the presence of old structures such as these from bygone eras. The stories each one of these bridges holds is likely an amazing glimpse back in time. Many have seen war, heard secret conversations and plots, couples sharing a kiss and even criminal activity, as thieves often hid in the rafters of covered bridges to rob unsuspecting travelers. I wonder to myself what famous historic people have crossed over their planks. Maybe presidents, famous writers, aristocrats, and perhaps even runaway slaves? The stories they could tell would be more fascinating than any blockbuster movie I've seen in my lifetime. *************** A STORY I WANT TO SHARE Here is a story that this particular bridge would hold. In 2010, we allowed my wife's high school friend to come stay with us. She was having a difficult time and needed a place to lay her head for a few weeks. During that time her situation escalated and a few weeks turned into a year. Oh, did I mention she had 4 children (three boys and a girl) ranging in ages from 8 to 13? Well we've always been a traveling family, even when our personal economy was under stress. So instead of 2-week long vacations, we paired our trips down to affordable weekend getaways. One weekend while this family stayed with us, we traveled to South Carolina to explore the fall colors in the mountains for a few days. When we returned they all gathered around to see our photos and I noticed sadness on the kids' faces after we'd finished discussing all the cool things we saw on the road. I just didn't think about how this family may be feeling as they were struggling to even survive. So I made up in my mind right then I was going to take those kids on a weekend adventure of their own. The following weekend I set off on another adventure with my oldest son and the three oldest children from my wife's friend. We labeled it "Guys Weekend" and even made a sign for the back window of our car. I wanted it to be a big deal to them. We explored many areas in the Carolina Mountains, including a brief visit here to Campbell's Bridge. The scene is picturesque. Surrounded by mountains and farmland is this little oasis of trees along the banks of a small river. The setting includes a mock well, picnic area and lots of large boulders for the boys to jump and play. I took a ton of pictures during our trip and it was here I sat down with the boys and talked a little about life, forgiveness and being grateful for the simple things in life. It was a magical day and a magical trip, one I hope will bring a smile to their faces for a lifetime. We saw waterfalls, mountaintops, ate great foods & visited some of the coolest parts of nature in the South. The mountains of the Carolina's are filled with awe and wonder for those who love the great outdoors. Campbell's bridge is truly awesome. Also nearby is Poinsett Bridge, a stone bridge that was once part of the main road between Greenville, SC and Asheville, NC. *************** BRIDGE STATS The ONLY surviving covered bridge in the entire state of SC Year completed: 1909 35 feet long by 12 feet wide Large gravel parking area Tiered stone picnic area Stone well FINAL THOUGHTS If there was one thing I would encourage everyone to do, it is to pay life forward. If you've never thought about being a blessing to a family in turmoil, please use this review as a source of encouragement. Give them a gift of a wonderful weekend, even if it's just a day trip. Make plans to show them something or someplace they might otherwise have not had the opportunity to see. Honestly, it blessed my family far more than it blessed theirs! It truly does my heart some good seeing this beautiful part of our history go untouched by vandalism and shenanigans. I am sorry to say I don't know who handles the upkeep here but they do a wonderful job. Parking is free and spacious, it's located far enough off the road you don't hear much traffic. Great back drop for pictures. I heard a rumor parts of a movie was filmed here. True beauty

Great place to take the family. Just be leary in the latter evening as there seems to be some not so nice people come to visit.

Jump Off Rock--located about 15 minutes from Hendersonville, NC--is a scenic overlook of Western North Carolina with three easy hiking trails, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a sunny day. There is complimentary parking, easy-to-follow trails that are hiker-friendly for all ages, benches to enjoy the scenic outlook, and wheelchair accessibility. Once my family arrived, we enjoyed the magnificent view of the Western North Carolina mountain range, taking photos of the scenery and personal selfies together. There is a drawing of the mountain range that identifies which mountains you are looking at. I found this very helpful since I could finally put names to the mountains in front of my eyes. After admiring the amazing view, we took the three hikes Jump Off Rock offers. The trails are fairly easy, ranging from 0.25 to 1 mile. They are easy to access, located on the left and right sides of the parking lot. The paths are simple to follow and not too dangerous for occasional hikers and their furry friends. While we were there, my family and I saw two deer on the path, which was really cool. Altogether, the three trails took us around 30 minutes at an average pace. Just a quick note--there are no restrooms or portable toilets at Jump Off Rock. I recommend stopping in Hendersonville or at a gas station before making your journey. If it's a nice day or you just want to get out of the house, I highly recommend visiting Jump Off Rock to enjoy the scenic overlook of the Western North Carolina mountain range and reconnect with nature.

This little community center seems to have a lot to offer: - The playground is a lot of fun- both our kids, ages 4 & 7, loved it! A well-kept wooden playground with swings (3 regular & 1 baby swing), a seesaw, a tire swing, and a big plastic sea monster for climbing. - Short paved walking loop with some benches, picnic tables and grill, and 1 of those little exercise stops and a creek flowing by (great for kids to splash around in!) - Large grassy field - Basketball court (half court) - Community garden - Large picnic table area with covered pavilion - Leashed dogs allowed (please pick up after them - there are poop bags along the sidewalk) The community center appears to be closed right now and I haven't checked out the website yet but there's a board with some info by the playground. It seems like they offer yoga classes (Free maybe? Says "donations accepted"), there's an ad for reiki healing, and a whole calendar of events for children and adults. This center definitely seems to run on donations and volunteers. We were happy to contribute to the painted metal donation post by the playground. Peaceful, safe, beautiful park areas like this are hard to find these days. We're passing through, as we're just frequent vacationers to the area, but I hope the community keeps up this little local gem!

This is my favorite Buncombe County River Park. Even though there are no restroom facilities here,…read morethe beauty and serenity of the location more than make up for it. In addition to the various natural dams and rocks in the River, someone has created a little kiddie pool to keep the little ones from floating downstream to Marshall. The river splits with part of it going down a channel to the right, forming walnut island. That little section of the river is just absolutely gorgeous, and the county maintains an easily traversed path the Full length of the island. It could be the perfect location for a small informal wedding, with the bride coming down the path from around the bend, a natural canopy complete with beautiful gurgling sounds of the river flowing over the rocks. The park is equipped with barbecue grills and picnic tables, although the tables look pretty uncomfortable. I suggest bringing your own canvas or folding chairs & blanket if you're going to be here for a while. There is plenty of gorgeous grass, and the park seems to be pretty well maintained. This morning, I saw two people fly fishing, in their waders, as well as a couple more people fishing from a small boat on the river. Really, an idyllic scene. No one else was in the park for the entire 30 minutes we were there, so if you want a little privacy and a gorgeous spot, Walnut Island River Park is the place to go. At least until it gets discovered by the masses.

We went to Little Bradley Falls, located in Saluda, North Carolina. Due to a wildfire that happened a couple of years back some of the trials are restricted for hikers. However, you are still able to see Little Bradley Falls and explore the surrounding area. The trail is pet and kid friendly, with designated paths, so you do not have to worry about getting lost. The parking lot is more of "pull of the side of the road" style parking. It was tight, but I was able to park my SUV. Although the majority of Little Bradley Falls trail was closed, the rest of the trail was well kept, and you could visibly see the park staff was working on reopening the damaged trail. The waterfall was beautiful, there is an observation area where you can see the majestic waterfall, perfect for photos. Although the trail was well cleared, one dangerous part is you have to climb over rocks in the river to get to the other side of the trail. It wasn't that difficult, but should be considered when planning your hike to Little Bradley Falls. If you are in the Saldua North Carolina area, or want to take an easy hike with the family, I would definitely recommend taking a look into Little Bradley Falls.
