A friend of mine and I got in a discussion about the merits of empty space. She lives in Fitzroy, where every space has a purpose. Someone is living in it, putting art in it, playing music in it, eating in it, drinking in it... Everything is used. I live in the suburbs, and just around the corner from my house is a wasteland from a primary school that got knocked down. I like it when space is just let be. Possibly one of the cleverer examples of a reclaimed or multipurpose space that one can find around Melbourne, and one even I can appreciate is the subway under Flinders St from the station to Degraves.
There are a variety of shops there, all interesting and worth a look - proper "independent" stores with indie designers. There's even a zine shop. Point of the mention, though, is the art. At the end of the subway the walls are lined with unassuming glass cases. They look like the ones you might have seen housing "what we've been up to" displays when you were at school, but they are so much more.
Like many of the free art spaces, it's oft changing. Sometimes you'll see a few words, a picture, and sometimes you'll see a person inside as part of a live artmaking installation. Pretty cool. read more
