This marker is at a slight pullout on the south side of Cummings Highway (also known as Lee Highway and US Highway 41) and points out history that predates the Civil War.
The marker reads, "To the east, at the mouth of Chattanooga Creek, was this supply base for Tennessee troops during the Creek War of 1812-13. The river here forms Moccasin Bend in its efforts to break through the mountains." The marker was installed by the Tennessee Historical Commission and is number 2A 5.
During the Creek Indian War with the Red Stick group of the Creek tribes, Camp Ross was used to support Tennessee forces. The Red Sticks were defeated by Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, which led to the Treaty of Fort Jackson (1814), that put an end to the war. Around 1813, the fort was abandoned.
