Campsites are well equipped with fire pit, picnic table, flat spot for a tent and pole hooks to hang belongings outside
Sarah Y.

We really enjoyed our "not too far from home" camping jaunt here. While the perimeters aren't too far off from main Lake Cook Road (and you could easily order in a pizza), the site itself and the surrounding 73 acres of forest and wetland preserves gives it a semi-secluded feeling. Yes the campgrounds are kept very well and there are several communal buildings that house a 24 hr office with electricity, AC, and clean bathrooms, amenities for purchase like firestarters and firewood, and friendly staff that gives it a no doubt glamping feeling. There are drinking fountains for water, and paved walkpaths. The trailheads are all close to the campsite and you can easily go on a 5.4 mi hike through the forest preserve or take an easier 3 mi hike on paved paths of the public park that the locals use. As others have said, there are definitely mosquitos around. DEET it up immediately and I was fine but for the 5 min I didn't have OFF! on, I had several bites. Each site comes with a fire pit and grate, picnic table, poles and hooks to hang valuables outside, and a sizable area to pitch the tent. The campsites are spaced very close together, and some sites, like ours (site 9) had direct sunlight with little shade during the day. There were lots of families with young kids and also a few larger rowdier parties. Being so close together, it's the luck of the draw whether you get quiet or rowdy neighbors. We drank beers discretely and didn't have any trouble and I think the no alcohol policy only applies if you're camping with a youth group. Would go again for a mini getaway to nature that is still close to home and a comfortable experience. You can reserve a site head of time on their website for $35/night on the weekends. If you are an avid outdoors person, you may find this site akin to wading in the kiddie pool though.

What else are you going to do in 70 plus degrees on a Saturday in March? Yes, go for a 3 mile walk!…read more My wife and I have been itching to go for a walk since we go here every Saturday from Spring to late Fall. The entrance we go to is off Dundee road and i had plenty of parking! The trails are well kept and the trees look great in the summer and even more beautiful in the fall. There are gravel trails and paved trails. We typically use the paved trails. People are very courteous when running or riding bikes. They call out that they are passing which it great for safety reasons. The different birds and sometimes we see deer grazing and it's beautiful to see. Along the path there is a radio controlled area where people can fly their gas powered airplane. It is pretty to cook to see and they are very skilled! It has a runway which looks cool, like it is a mini airport. I highly recommend coming here during the summer for hiking, biking, roller blading, picnics, etc. I'll update pictures for each of the seasons!!!!

I must say this place Busse Woods is large, sprawling, neat, clean, and impressive (it's 3558 acres in fact). I think I knew that it was sprawling driving along Higgins Rd, but pulling in, you can see how well laid out and maintained the premises are.  It would be quite nice to revisit during winter and the change of fall colors also. Grove 5 in particular is an extra nice picnic grove in that it has a shelter and is near (540' to be exact per the website!) a nice and accessible restroom building.  The shelter is pretty large with a capacity of 100 people.  It's located in a section called Busse Forest-South and which comprises Groves 5 - 16.  Of those 12 groves, 4 have shelters, but only Grove 5 is close to an accessible restroom.  So, our family member apparently picked out the best grove, good job!  Busse Woods has 11 sections like Busse Forest-South, so it's massive with a lot of picnic location and other leisure activity options.  Anyway, go to their website for more info, but I was pretty impressed.  Busse Woods includes a Busse Lake as well as a 7 mile trail.  Big thumbs up for this Cook County Forest Preserve!

Sometimes the bathrooms are open, other times sorry it's porta potties for you. Plenty of garbage cans around so don't litter in nature! The 7+ mile trail is paved. My understanding was we were allowed to stay for one hour, and it was well worth the nominal admission fee! It had all the best components of a park, with lots of attention being focused on exploration and discovery. I did not see any swings, but there was plenty to climb on and signs posted everywhere encouraging the parents to not be helicopter parents... to let their child explore and try to problems solve on their own. There was a man-made creek running through one edge of the park and half the children were in bathing suits and had shovels and buckets with them. My grandkids declared it the best park they've ever visited! The playground is attached to a large piece of land that has tons of walking paths and picnic areas along with nice bathrooms and an educational nature center! It would be very easy to spend the better part of a day here!
