The Food Bank has benefits the different communities nearby, like Newark and Wilmington, with items being donated to help those in need. I have helped with different groups throughout my time in Delaware and have always been a big advocate of trying to support local non-profits whenever I get a chance. This sometimes has a delicious reward with money spent at the Discovery Cafe supporting the cause while enjoying some yummy curry chicken salad wrap for lunch on my day off. The Cafe has some indoor and outdoor seating along with some fresh produce for some homecooked meals at home. This is a review of the CSA farm share. While the idea of supporting the property is nice, we found…read morethe size of the share given out each week to be very small and lacked variety. They were very enthusiastic about offering unusual produce at the beginning of the season, but really did not come through with anything too unusual. The pick your own section was extremely limited and consisted of mostly flowers and a few herbs. When they were short, they would include a bunch of herbs for the share from the pick your own selection. And they had a huge fenced in garden area with irrigation with large sections unplanted the entire growing season since they were trying a new growing method which was based on keeping a large portion of the usable planting area weeds. And the few other perks like the cooking classes had such a limited availability, it was taken up by the same regulars every week, so was more like a private social group for long time members who had first choice of future classes. And everything else offered for sale from local farmers like cheese and honey was fairly expensive. It seems they could have used more volunteer farm workers helping in the fields or at least purchased bulk produce more often when they were short. And while the volunteers were friendly, some of the policies were a bit strict. Like if you didn't like one kind of produce, they didn't want to let you take twice as much of something else. So when I have an abundance of my own tomatoes to have to take shares of tomatoes every week for half the summer it made the small shares even less worth it. The produce overall was tasty and good quality, just small quantity. It was something nice to try for a season, but for the cost, I don't think we will be back this year.

Torn how to rate this. On one hand over the years it's been a wonderful gallery that's been…read moresupportive of local artists and has nice receptions once a month and community based art opportunities. However... since the people doing the supporting has changed, the kindness and vibe has changed completely. The people that run it are downright rude, snobbish and elitist, none of which supports the arts and its patrons! As of 2023, we visited JP Henry's art reception July 23 and that was a joy and wonderful. However the serious grump of a woman with the German accent behind the counter was unabashedly and shockingly downright rude, obnoxious and bullying to the patrons! I found out she SITS ON THE BOARD of this organisation! It was the first time I felt uncomfortable visiting an otherwise joyous occasion. Disgraceful to not only the showing artist but anyone in attendance! I witnessed board member of CCAC give a young man a hard time from the moment he entered the gallery saying "Oh no, you better not start trouble!" ?!?!? And when he, like other patrons went to get something to eat she YELLED at him telling him it something to the effect that it was a "snack" and he wasn't welcome there for dinner? Way to drive people AWAY in droves! Now I was pleasantly surprised when we visited main street for a holiday theme thing and we went into CCAC and they did have an amazing set up of a wide variety of artists selling for the holiday season at great prices, which is how I accidentally discovered them a couple years back and have been to events and receptions and they were all wonderful but honestly if this lady has anything to do with the org, I will think twice before coming. What a downer!

I gave a second star because the people I dealt with in my two visits there were generally…read morepleasant. Otherwise, it would have been one. Timing and treatment of donors appear to be major problems at the Christiana center. At each visit, I had to wait much longer in the reception area (after filling out the electronic questionnaire) than I ever have at other donation centers. That wasn't the worst of it, though. Each time, once I had done the in-person interview and had my vitals and blood iron level checked, I was taken to lie down in a chair in the donation area. On my first visit, I lay there for about 15 minutes, without anyone even acknowledging my presence, before the phlebotomist finally arrived to take my blood. I'm used to getting hooked up immediately at my usual donation center, so that long delay was frustrating. I heard someone say they were short-staffed that day, so I decided to give the location one more try. The next time I was scheduled to donate, I returned to Christiana. I told my interviewer about the previous delay; she said something reassuring, then took me to the chair. This time, I lay there for more than 20 minutes, without a word from anyone -- no "Sorry for the delay" or "Someone will be with you shortly" or anything. I was feeling not just unappreciated but invisible. And I was worried I'd be late getting somewhere after my appointment. So, for my first time ever (after 50+ blood donations), I simply got up and left, telling the receptionist I couldn't wait any longer. From now on, I'll be donating my blood elsewhere.
