If you want a church with the loudest rock you've EVER heard and with lots of strobe lights and a female singer who sounds like a sick animal, then this is the place for you. They manage to fit in a short sermon from the famous minister. You will NEVER meet the minister because he is too well known to mingle with ordinary church goers. They had a beautiful women's bible study going and about 300 plus women attended in the large chapel. The pastor's wife stopped the meetings and said that 'we want to focus on the younger people.' I felt it was an incredible loss for me, and I'm sure it was for many others. Turns out they wanted to give their golden slippers to their son, who is a want to be pastor of poor quality. I was so shocked when the pastors wife didn't give a rip about all the women who'd been attending. There was no option. The women's bible study was DONE and you could go to Corrales or some other location to try to continue a home based bible study. No more using the Cavary location for women's bible studies. Needless to say, I left the church and still find it painful. I had finally found a women's bible study at a church location that felt great to me. The woman ended it without a look back. SO cold and calculated --'we'll focus on the young people now.' I had been attending and tithing there for two years. I had to use ear plugs to enter, but the women's studies was worth it to me. I found out that the church was delivering groceries to the richest members of the church. I am elderly but I sure didn't count as RICH!! After the pastor's wife evicted all of us from the women's bible study, I was contacted 9 months later with an offer to 'pray for me.' Talk about unresponsive. I regret EVER going to Calvary - it encourages the rich and really only wants the YOUNG in their congregation. It isfake and phoney --- their care goes about as far as your dollars go. If living and learning about being a Christian is for you, then I believe this is a place for you to consider as your future home of worship. Why is Calvary of Albuquerque a good place? I can think of three reasons. First Skip Heitzig [http://skipheitzig.com/teachings.asp] is wise, and he shares so much life experiences with his Bible based studies. Second, the campus is welcoming for many types of people, for the campus [http://www.calvaryabq.org/pdf/CalvaryCampusMap.pdf] includes a nursing mother's room and a family room great for kids. Third, there are many ways for you to be involved from tuning in on the radio to being a present and active Christian every day. Sundays are not always the same at Calvary. A Sunday Bible study series can be placed on hold to hear a guest speaker promote a new book, or a guest lecturer can come in and share some Bible based stories. This is true with the Wednesday lessons, for the teachings can be paused to welcome a guest pastor who may teach any subject matter. I have heard excellent guest pastors as well as the "Meh. I've learned from better." The Wednesday sessions are a good variety; sometimes they include specific prayer requests with small groups all around you, or I have even attended an all music gospel based on more on the non-traditional rock genre. Variety is key. It's needed to keep the quickly disengaged somewhat more interested. There are televisions around the campus that helps you listen to the speaker. I wish the television in Solomon's Porch would always be turned on and tuned live to the speaker. On Wednesdays that television is usually on, so you may sip on your tea or coffee while listening to the lecturer. Otherwise, the hallways outside the main sanctuary has televisions that you may chose to sit on the floor and watch. Sometimes this is not a choice because once the doors close, you are not allowed in the main sanctuary in order to preserve the mood, so I have seen people sit in the hallway. I prefer not to sit on the floor, so at that point I'll go into the family room because people are free to move about. I do have to mention why Calvary lost a star from my original review; this is not something I have experienced, but I believe my sister when she says that there are mean Christians at Calvary. We know rude Christians exist, and too bad those followers come to Calvary acting like they know everything while treating people less than human. My sister thinks it is due to racism, but whatever "ism" it is, it is apparent by the way she and her family are sometimes treated by these self-proclaimed followers of Jesus. Here is what they need to do: actually read and UNDERSTAND the entire Bible. I shouldn't be shocked, but I am whenever she confides in me the different times people are weird to her over there. I guess I'm lucky because I have not experienced any of those actions she is complaining about. I'm going to pray about all of this. Will you as well? read more

This church has such a great adult, middle school, and high school service, and a wonderful young children development. The teachers work very hard on getting ready and take great care of the children. The middle school service is very well taught and very friendly. There is always a paster to talk to no matter what you need to talk about. Great place for middle schoolers to progress in there relationship with Christ. They as we'll have a coffee shop and bookstore. The coffee shop has great coffee and bakery products. The bookstore has a great selection of music and books. Check it out some time. You won't regret it. Are you sitting at home doing nothing on a Friday night? Go to the mix Gameroom and skatepark. Don't skate? Don't worry!! You can go and play wii, Xbox, ping pong, pool table, and buy snacks. It has a great skater pro shop that also carries longboard products. Great staff. Go check it out! It felt like the pastor was trying to sell me a ticket to get in line to buy a ticket for heaven. The whole thing felt commercialized and politicized and some disturbing questions have been raised. Why does a church have a gift shop? God and Christianity are not businesses. Charity is something to be encouraged, but the recipients of said charity are not the ones who should be dictating terms or placing price tags. Why does Skip Heitzig's presence or absence affect attendance? Why should it? People should be there for the message, not for the host/speaker. One of the most important virtues is humility. The exalted shall be humbled, and the humble shall be exalted, right? Then why does the chapel look like a mall or an office building? There might as well be a sign that reads "God, Inc." or "Calvary, LLC." The place is a Power Point presentation away from becoming another Enron! read more

Since moving back I have frequented the Wednesday night services here and I have to say the people and the music make for a phenomenal experience! First you typically start with worship which consists of a dope band sing along, awesome light projections, and concert style quality show! I love seeing the people get into worship too, hands held high to the sky and singing at your best as if in your shower! Skip the main man usually does an excellent sermon/bible study where you get in depth knowledge and feedback on the scriptures of the Bible! I never find myself gazing or glossing over either, always engaging information. Everyone is warm and welcoming as well. Sweet friendly christian crowd all with the same purpose of loving GOD and worshipping a higher power of being. If you can't make it to a service you can also stream the live version from any internet enabled device...so no excuses peeps! Lol This church is also one of the prettiest campuses I've ever seen! Rude security. After me wearing a fanny pack I was stopped at the doors. They said they search all men who have bags. Not true. They have stopped my wife and I am number of times but never anyone else. We do you understand why. We dress appropriately. We have never given any reason for them to target us. They are rude when approaching us. Then after I told them no its my personal belongings we had 8 - 12 security follow us around outside. I understand they want to protect however this has gone to far. As I do conceal my firearm in my fanny pack. They will make you feel unwelcome if you conceal. Expect to be watched and followed. For those who say if you are not hiding anything then what's the big deal. I carry my firearm. For those who don't know, it's completely legal to have your firearm in church. Calvary has no signs posted saying no firearms. With that said After I said no I have my firearm concealed. Wow you should see how quick they are to surround me. Unprofessional. Rude. And if you ask me. . They protect the celebrity Skip. The told me there is no need to bring a firearm as they have there own Security. Well that's nice and all but unless they are sitting around me and my family there is no way I will trust someone else to protect my family. read more

Long ago a friend went to this chapel expectant to find support and care during trying times. Going up for prayer after the service, a supposed minister arrogantly felt the need to be seen rather than bind the wounds of a broken soul. That being said, a recent visit to the Chapel was revisited in hopes they had moved far beyond celebrity status, and truly moved in the ministry of the saints filling the pews. Packed and overflowing to the grounds, one would think Jesus was there. Sitting down near the front, one lady turned to me saying she had waited months for the announced band to play. Seemed odd that the band took precedence in her mind. Music started playing from the regular team of singers, rather loudly and with much fanfare and lights. Looking around it dawned on me that perhaps it was a concert, not a Sunday Worship service. Skips son came out announcing the "BAND" the woman next to me had so dearly wanted to see. Very commercialized worship I might add. At this point everything in me wanted to run out the doors. I'm not so sure the ushers would have let me out, for it was rumored once the doors closed all were captive until the end. Rather than run, I waited to hear Skip teach. Aye, he is indeed one of the best biblical teachers around; smooth while witty and truly knows the word. Were it not for the teaching, this church visit would have been only ONE STEEPLE star rather than two. Calvary Chapel with Skip Hetzig would not be church without him. The sheeple seem dazed and confused. I am not sure about the inner workings of Calvary - perhaps its a great place. As for Sabbath worship, its apparent the music is king and worship leaders get the glory. This church may be cool, but it made me wonder where Jesus fits in despite all the talk about him. Therefore, Calvary Chapel gets only TWO STEEPLES. read more

I urge you to really study a church against scripture before becoming a member. After attending for 6 years, it became very obvious for me to leave. Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque has become a big business, and constantly tries to justify their corruption. First: They have practiced simony, which is the selling of the communion bread and juice. This was for sale in their book store. They later claimed the money was donated for some better cause. It doesn't matter what the money is used for, simony is absolutely wrong, and was considered heresy in the Middle Ages. Second: People hold the leadership in too high of regard. Skip is the head pastor at Calvary, and from my experience people focus on his greatness more than the message he preaches. This is a corruption that stems from Calvary's Distinctives--a book that all Calvary leadership abides by. It emphasizes the "Moses model" which basically means the leader of the people is given a more-than-mere-human "special revelation" from God. What this really translates to is a power-trip. This was also very evident when I attended a Calvary Chapel in California. Another effect is that if the head of a church does something wrong, they're only accountable to God. There was already a huge scandal that occurred around 2007 which revealed the corruption of leadership, and yet there was no disciplinary action taken to the church leader (Skip Heitzig). Here's an interesting observation: When Skip isn't going to be teaching, the attendance reduces considerably. Is the congregation there to listen to the message or listen to Skip? Third: The messages themselves are often taken out of context. They're topical, which means they use Bible verses to support their main topic instead of really teaching God's Word. Anyone can make the Bible say anything if they take a verse here and a verse there. Calvary tries to come up with topics that "sell." In fact, they will place huge banners outside of their church and elsewhere with attention-grabbing titles to draw in the crowd. I was disgusted to see one outside of the church that had the word SEX in huge print. It's obvious they're no different than television advertisements that try to draw in consumers. My opinion is that if they're trying to entertain people rather than preach the Word properly, I might as well be entertained by secular media--they do a better job at it anyway. Forth: Calvary of Albuquerque spends their money recklessly on worthless things. They have different themes throughout the week, and they will buy expensive, worthless decorations to support their theme. One time during Christmas, I counted over 10 Christmas trees on their stage. Is that what they spend their money on? Even if they claim that some is donated, they should urge the donors to send to those who are really in need. The church "campus" they have built up is full of luxuries, including a game room for the youth, and a skate park--because God's Word apparently isn't enough to draw people in. Fifth: Calvary Chapel members have experienced abuse worldwide. Take at the Rick Ross Institute website (Which reports on Controversial groups) and you will find many grievances against Calvary Chapel. There are also many accounts scattered throughout the internet. As Galatians 5:9 states "A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough." The little corruption that has gone undisciplined since Calvary Chapel has begun has spread into a large irresponsible business that uses the Word of God to justify anything they want to do. read more

i read a lot of reviews of people looking at the "church" instead of looking at themselves. they trying to blame people for their own downfalls. we need to stop trying to find fault in other people, don't focus on them, focus why you are going there. for jesus, not the person you sitting next to or behind you or in front of you. if you are going and looking at other people you will never ever learn anything, and always be a doom sayer. i have some sad news people like this. those people in church's are just as broken and hurting as you are. as far skip is concerned, i met him once and only once, and he was pleasant. i am hard hearing and i went up to him and just put my phone in front of him and asked him to clarify for me what he said. well i was a new christian and that wasn't the smartest thing to do. but he was gracious and understanding. so people saying he is stuck up, most pastors of a huge church like that would probably just called security. he did not. he read it and explained what he meant. it was only a minute or two. i use my phone to read what people are saying . i have voice translator app on my smart phone. and it doesn't always get what people are saying. so i am not sure if skip is stuck up, he certianly wasn't with me and he never had met me before that. i understand everyone wants his attention, and as a human being he just as flawed and broken as the rest of us. we as a church expect pastors to be "super christians" when in reality they just like you and me, broken, hurting and faults, it is the communitie's fault for putting him on a high pedestal that he can never live up to. i see people say "i tithe alot " so what if you tithe, if you are tithing and wanting something back, that is not the heart of jesus. you tithe because you love jesus, not skip or anything else. broadcasting that you "tithe alot" why are you saying that, because it makes you think you deserve something in return. let me tell you something, god doesn't need your money and he certianly doesn't want your money when you have a heart like that. just keep your money, because it sounds like you trying to buy influence instead of really giving to the lord. calvary puts their financials open to anyone who wants to see it, i don't see them hiding their financials as i see so many church's do. you have to remember this is a huge church, skip just can't meet with every single person, he is only one person, so he has leadership to help him. just because you go to calvary, you expect him to say hello to you. if he said hello to every single person there, he would never have time for his family or himself. when people start going to church for the right reason "jesus" not skip, your heart will change. you are going to see a false image you have in your head to see skip, not meet jesus. and i am sure if skip was asked, that would break his heart that you are going there for him instead of jesus. i don't know if he would, i never asked him that, but i think he would truly be heart broken you going to calvary because of him instead of jesus. all these leaders at calvary like every church on the planet are people with faults, defects, that need jesus as much as the person sitting next to you, and need jesus just as much as you do. you need jesus so do they. instead of critizing them, why don't you get on your knees and pray for them, pray for their heart and yours. you be amazed just how much prayer changes things, we need to stop looking at other people and look at our own sin first, get right with god, and jesus then walk along with others to show them that same love and grace and mercy that christ has shown you. no i don't go to calvary because i have a service dog and they don't allow them. but i have listen to enough teachings from all calvary church's that i don't believe for one moment they are false. they go thru the bible book by book and to me that is what needed. instead of getting on your high horse and mocking a church or a pastor, get on your knees humble yourself and pray for them, love them, because hate only causes division. and if they really are doing wrong, trust me if you are humbling yourself before god the father and jesus, and praying for them all the time, prayer changes things, and faith even as small as a mustard seed will toss down a mountain, and if that little of a faith can do that, and you biblically humble yourself before the lord and pray for them and yourself, do you really think calvary is big enough to stand against the lord himself, no they are not. so if they really are doing wrong things, then those that are humble before the lord and pray constantly for them, that will be exposed and will be brought down, if they are doing something wrong, for who can stand against the lord of host. so pray, love, and serve them go to church seeking jesus, not skip, not your neighbor, for love covers a multitude of sins read more

Love this echurch! Love that they are promoting the connect groups! The Heitzig family is blessed in teaching. Negative responses needs to be taken with grain of salt. No one is perfect and all that is preached can be confirmed by the word. I have a study bible by another great minister of God's word and what is preached at Calvary lines up. Be careful tearing down those who preach Gods word when there is no proof! . Skip and family are regular people, to hold them to higher standard is not the smartest thing to do, all of us are imperfect except for our precious Jesus! read more

Best bible teaching church in the city. The core of this church is the verse by verse teaching of the bible. The worship is energetic and contemporary, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. They have a fantastic coffee shop with a full service espresso bar and Clover machine as well as the largest Christian bookstore in the state. Make sure to rsvp for the VIP experience. read more

Unfortunately, I agree with the negative reviews below. They have left their first love, JESUS! I have been a part of and associated with this church for nearly 20 years. The teaching was formerly "line by line", with an emphasis on living holy lives and taking the Bible seriously. They have been on a slow drift for years. They are now unrecognizable as they church that they once were. Last year's Christmas service was truly shameful, I felt as though I was in a club in Vegas rather than a sanctuary. I feel sad writing this review. I pray that Skip and the head Pastor's return to their former priorities. I can no longer attend, everything is a joke, or intended to "entertain", it is distracting from the Word. One last thing...children are strictly prohibited from being in the sanctuary with their parents. I never see children separated from their parents in "children's ministry" in the Bible. Jesus said, "Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these". I do understand that they have a separate "family room" but it is disconnected from the main sanctuary and is isolating. The church has become one big business and looks identical to other "mega churches" across the country. I never thought that I would see that from CAlvary ABQ. Sad. read more

I went to Calvary for 3-4 years, and began noticing, it seems staged. They don't show where the tithing money goes. They are more into the themes and decorating the stage every Sunday. The teachings from Skip doesn't seem genuine. Also, I ran into Skip outside of church in a restaurant and talked with him a little. I don't know a nicer word for stuck up. But that's what he was, the complete opposite from what he projects himself to be at church. Never again going back to Calvary it's all a business. read more

I visit albuquerque alot and when Im there I make sure to go to saturday night services here its my favorite church the childrens church is fun for my daughter and pastor skip is a excellent preacher/teacher he makes sure to break down every part of the bible he reads and helps us understand the verses better the song service is always excellent and very annointed and alot of services has a live broadcast of batisms which is also a fun experiance I love this church when Im away from albuquerque I miss it if you are in the area come check it out if your not in the area tune in online on radio or podcast check their website for info on how to hear them other ways if you dont live near by read more

This is truly not your parents church. It is a contemporary, dynamic church with in depth bible based teaching. I learn something each week, even on topics I have heard presented my entire life. Giving / requests for funds is low key- usually mentioned once per service and no bucket is passed. I believe most giving is done on line, although there are wooden boxes you can drop a donation or prayer request in. The contemporary music is very good (although we do hear the same 20- 25 songs a bit too often) and you will even have an old hymn thrown in occasionally, which people sing with relish. Kids have their own programs during the service- separate from the adults- which allows parents (and the rest of us) a chance to actually concentrate on the service & teaching. Christmas / Easter is not aimed at regular attenders, but at those who only come 1-2 times a year. I think the idea is to get people in the door and hopefully they will come back for a bit of bible teaching. The church stresses that you should consider joining a small group as you can get lost in a church this size. We haven't actually joined a small group as we live a bit farther away than most members and there isn't a group in our area. If you are searching for a potential church home / family, it's easy to recommend Calvary for the above reasons. Calvary is not your grandmother's church, and I mean this in the best way possible. I was raised going to very traditional catholic church as well as spending half my time at a very traditional small Baptist church. I hate to say that I never felt "moved" or inspired by attending these churches. 4 years ago I had my first encounter with Calvary, (unfortunately it was for my cousins funeral). I am recently returning to Calvary having a strong positive feeling toward this church, I can feel god leading me here. I attended the service with guest Speaker Levi Lusko on Saturday evening. My husband and I felt so moved and inspired. We love the music, we loved the people. We rededicated ourselves to Jesus during an alter call and were left in happy tears at the end of the evening. What an amazing feeling to do this with so many other people. I feel more at peace within my soul, and my husband I will be attending on a more regular basis.
