I initially went there because as a professional photographer I like supporting real camera shops. I like the idea of great service and a knowledgable staff, and for the prices they charge I would expect that. However, I haven't found that to be the case.
I always have to wait about 15 minutes to talk to anyone even though there are always at least three people working there. When you do get someone it is sort of hit or miss as to how your experience will go. I've had guys who were friendly and helpful, and I've had guys who acted like they had better things to do even though you were spending over £1,000 on lights or lenses.
They have a decent in-store selection, but for some reason I almost always have to order what I want to buy from them because it's never in stock. Then, I have to pick it up in store a couple days later or pay extra to have it delivered at home. At that point it becomes both more expensive and less convenient than simply ordering from Amazon.
Finally, they offer a seven day price match guarantee on items, but for some reason it doesn't apply to their own deals. I recently bought a £700+ lens from them, and 2 days later there was a deal on it, but they said that they couldn't apply it to the stuff I bought from them already. In the end, it only cost me £30, but it was the final nail in the coffin for me and them at that point. I would think that a loyal repeat customer who spends around £1,000/year there would get the benefit of the doubt, but they just acted indifferent.
Calumet typically has equal or higher prices than Amazon, and even places like Curry's and John Lewis, but they don't offer any extra level of service, warranty, or convenience. I really wanted to like shopping there because it was so close and they are an actual dedicated camera shop, but there really isn't any reason to shop there in my opinion. read more
