I can say this was one of the more memorable shops I surveyed in the ol' Madrid strip, I really liked some of the work, and thought it reasonably priced, which tends to be the case with most boutiques in the area. Anticipate what you've seen in folk art museums, lots of unique and creative approaches to upcycling that incorporate an old tin can or antique lampshade. I was particularly caught staring at the work of Levi Koenen and Angela Rossi, the former merges license plates from around the country into neat wall hangings, the latter adds a post-modern twist to chinaware. The owner was nice, too, even if her 14 year-old dog had beef with our super chihuahua. As she mentioned, he was probably too blind to know what he was barking at.

I love this universal truth about small towns: virtually all civic and public resources have literal titles. Thus, Sprit In Art, while located in Gypsy Plaza, is situated along Firehouse Lane because, well, it's the road where the old Firehouse was and, just so happens, now helms the new Firehouse. It's run by volunteers because, well, of course it is. But anyway, Spirit in Art. First, the vibe and bright light streaming in this space is radically different than the Gypsy neighbors. The small studio mainly features clay sculpture from resident artist Liz Paterson, and her work is really fantastic; she throws gorgeous, smooth pots and plates, and designs characters that look like locals (not Madrid locals, Native real-deal locals), and recently her work has teetered political. We admired what we saw, Liz was really sweet with our kiddo, and she had some work that she said was imperfect which she gave away, free. We settled on a nice sage/meditation dish that was "smoked" and definitely fit my lady's spiritual den, that's her thing. Anyway, well worth a visit.

Driving towards Madrid, from the Albuquerque airport, we spotted this place with an eccentric…read moredecoration on the road. At first it looks like someone's house but all the colored glass bottles, décor and a sign saying "come in" suggested otherwise. So we stopped, parked right outside and started "studying" the outside, slowly moving inside. There we found more eccentric things like a sand dog, a mini golf area, a psychiatrist couch, a cantina, a tattooed tree and so much more, all created by the one and only Leroy. Who is Leroy, we asked ourselves the same question, when he appeared out of nowhere and started introducing himself and showing us around. At first it was a bit scary, being in the middle of nowhere with this man telling us to go into the closed cantina (we all looked at each other but went in anyway, making sure one of us stood by the door just in case). But after a few moments we realized this was just all fun, and he really enjoys having people over and giving them the tour of his place. A place he created for himself and for anyone that wants to enjoy a bit of his imagination. The tour is as short or as long as you want it to be. Leroy will show you around, tell you about each station or piece of art. He will tell you stories, make you laugh, and also will allow you to touch, play and stay as long as you want. He'll answer questions, and loves receiving photos and/ or notes of the people that have visited (he keeps all these in the cantina), and has a guest book at the entrance to be signed on the way out. Needless to say this was a really cute and fun stop on our trip and one we will never forget.

We were driving by this place last year and it was near dark, so we didn't stop in. This year when visiting Madrid we were driving by in the afternoon when the glint of sun light from the beer bottles laced atop the entry caught our eye. we pulled spontaneously to check out what this place was. We stepped a couple feet in, noting all the colorful things taking up the place. But before we could figure out what was going on, the proprietor seemed to appear out of know where. "Hello, Hello, Hello, I'm Leroy", he declared. In front of us what a older guy with a wild beard, a handful of Chiclet teeth in his mouth, which happened to be grinning ear to ear. He said the tour is starting. I didn't recall us agreeing to any tour, but we were all game. How showed us his "Cantina", "Flower", "Psychologist Couch" and more exhibits of his own making. They were all found art pieces in his front yard area. The entire visit may have only been 30 minutes or maybe it was more. Time wasn't flowing smoothly while we were there. I was glad for the spontaneous stop, and we were happy to sign the journal and make a donation. I'm sure you would not regret the stop either.

Very nice gallery in Madrid, they do sell a bit of everything, sculptures, paintings, various…read moreartists and styles. The decor is nice, they even have a cool display outside, the whole facade is renovated in great taste. The customer service is good, the lady working here was very welcoming, prices are high, but it's a great place to check out some art, take a break, cool off it's hot outside. Indigo Gallery is in the middle of downtown, you won't miss it!

A great gallery featuring works by Jill Schwaiko as well as other artists from New Mexico…read more Beautiful pieces. The originals paintings by Ms Schwaiko are all expensive (for us) but the prints are much more reasonable and reachable. The person we were visiting in NM had a print and it is stunning. I loved the sculptures the most. Small as well as some quite large ones displayed in the back garden. We picked up a small sculpture that we could not resist. Jane Cassidy, an artist whose work is displayed in the gallery as well, was very gracious and friendly to us. She showed us around the gallery and spoke about Jill's work extensively. We did not know she was one of the artists having a work displayed there until I mentioned how much I liked a piece in the window on the way out of the gallery, LOL. A piece that was very tempting as well. Madrid is well worth a visit if you are in NM, and the Indigo gallery should definitely be visited.
