Maybe, but hear me out before you jump to that conclusion. I've written it before, and I'll write it again, sometimes eateries that you stumble upon turn out to be so much more rewarding than those you set out for. We were looking for a different restaurant and couldn't find it. So, when standing on one side and looking across the Naab River, in the the quaint little town of Kallmünz, we saw a small patio filled with people drinking and dining. So off we walked across the small walking bridge that was built in 1752 (BTW, this little town needs its own praise). It had been lightly raining, so some tables on the patio were tucked in under the cover, while others were left to the elements a bit. They were at full capacity inside, so out in the elements we sat. We wouldn't have it any other way as it was just beautiful! The rain let up, and the ambiance was just so inviting. The staff (Waitress and I believe the owner based on the fact he was drinking beer while working) couldn't have been more accommodating. I believe we were the only Americans (or any English speaking people) there, so they pulled out the English menus and took it upon themselves to go ahead and precut our pizza for us. Note to new European travelers: pizzas are not precut. Most folk will use a knife and fork to eat their pizza, so if you want it a la American, ask them in advance to cut it for you. Not to belabor the point, but that view was so special. They had a gate for entrance right onto the patio. The river was literally no more than say 10 feet from the edge of the patio, which played host to an array of wildlife. While waiting for our food to arrive my daughter and wife strolled out and about to pass the time away. Speaking of food, yup, it's time to whip out those superlative adjectives again. Ok, for context, just two weeks prior we were in Rome. Obviously we dined out every night and I'm tellin' ya, hands down, the food at this little German Pizzeria beat the pants off of everything we tried in Rome. In my book, that speaks volumes! We shared a pizza, I had tortellini, so did my wife, but with a different sauce. My daughter had rigatoni and obviously we all dug into each other's dish a bit. Individually baked in their own dishes, of course. Very cheesy, great sauce, just awesome. The pizza was spot on as well! Good beer selection and all at an amazingly low price. Trust me, we've been traveling and eating out for the past straight month and by far, this has been the best value to date. Three main entrees, one pizza, three beers and one soda all for 40 Euros. Yes, you read that correctly! Fantastic meal, fantastic ambiance, good service, and a fantastic price! We are so going back, and if you haven't yet, you need to go there. If you have, you know! And you know you'll be going back too. Cheers!

Since we just arrived at our holiday destination, we checked the reviews of the restaurants in the neighborhood. Am Platzl scored well and had an interesting menu on the website. A few minutes later and one phone call, we had a reservation. So far so good. In the evening we arrived at the restaurant and were welcomed. We were asked to choose between modern en traditional. Since I like the "Gemütlichkeit" of traditional, the choice was easy. The interior is in any case of high quality and shows some upperclass style. Strange however that there are continuously guests walking in to pick-up their take-away pizza's. It is bit like not making a choice between being a classy restaurant or a pizzeria with take-away service. The menu is reasonable priced and shows a combination of traditional Austrian and Italian dishes (including pizza's). Next to the menu there are also a few dished of the day. The menu was for me very appealing and I had difficulties choosing. You never know to road not travelled. The waiter was fast and efficient, but didn't give a welcoming feeling. The waitress that didn't take care of us, sounded more friendly. The waiters attitude was even more expressed when we asked for kids menu options or dished with smaller portions (as you sometimes see for senior guests). There was actually none. For our six year old daughter we could order a normal adult plate or a starter. The latter would have been strange, who orders carpaccio, vitello tonato or steak tartare for a six year old daughter. A regular main dish remained the only option. Fortunately they had the pizza's and asked whether they could make a small pizza. Again the answer of the waiter was no. In the end we ordered a 10 euro pizza for our 6 year old daughter knowing that it would be way too much #foodwaste. This doesn't feel right and not very hospitable. Proactive thinking on what could be possible would have been appreciated; this would have been truly welcoming and hospitable. The food itself is above any doubt. Fresh ingredients, well prepared and very tasteful. I enjoyed the Zwiebelrostbraten, especially the sauce was divine. The salad (extra) was well sized and had a good vinaigrette. My wife had the spinach Knödel (three) and was delighted by taste, but size wise relatively small. The oversized pizza for my daughter was at par. My conclusion: The food is excellent (would have been 5 out of 5), but the hospitality ruins the experience. Final score 3 out of 5.

We were completely disappointed. The service was awful and we can't recomment this restaurant at…read moreall.
