Closer to California than to…read morePortland, Whaleshead is part of the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor and it's not terribly well-marked so you have to keep a lookout for the turn-offs off of Highway 101 to get here. This is not a swimming beach, like the other beaches along Oregon and Northern California, the water is way too cold and turbulent and there are probably sharks in the area (since they like cold water). This is more of a walking and exploring kind of beach. Both times I came, I basically had the entire beach to myself except for some seagulls and the odd turkey-vulture that showed up on my path. You can walk, and walk and walk and not see another soul. Along with the setting sun against the sea haystacks, the photo ops and atmosphere here cannot be beat. With forested pines running along a cliff behind you, few beaches are as wild as this one, without a development in sight anywhere. Let's hope it stays that way because the natural beauty here is truly pristine and overwhelming.

It's not just a lighthouse, it's actually a California Historical Landmark with so much character and history. You can only access it during low tide, which makes it even more magical (and a bit adventurous!). There are signs warning people not to cross during high tide and seriously, don't do it. The ocean can get wild out there! I went on a Saturday evening after 5 p.m., and the tide was already too high, so I played it safe and came back Sunday morning. Totally worth it. We had our coffees up there, and it honestly felt like being in a romantic movie scene. The weather was perfect, the ocean breeze was fresh, and the view was absolutely stunning. The lighthouse itself has such a cute, storybook charm. It even survived the 1964 Alaska earthquake and tsunami, which adds this incredible layer of resilience and history to the place. I didn't get to see any whales this time (though I heard you can spot them sometimes!), but there were plenty of seabirds flying around, adding to the coastal vibe. There's a park nearby with parking, so it's super convenient. And fun fact, according to their website, you can actually have your wedding there! How unbelievably romantic is that? If you're ever in Crescent City, take the time to visit Battery Point Lighthouse. Go early, bring a coffee, and just soak it all in, it's one of those places that makes you fall in love with the California coast all over again.

It's very short, about .5 miles and there's virtually no elevation. Parking is right off the highway. Some hike deeper into the forest and actually make their way on top of the bridges. Unfortunately some have also died doing so. Know your limits. There is a trail beyond the paved path and at some point it gets very steep and sketchy. This is where you should stop and turn around. It's best to enjoy these bridges from a distance and find much safer hikes to take which there are many of in this area. Happy hiking!

Day 1 - Jedediah Smith State Park & Stout Memorial Grove, and Day 2 - Mill Creek Trails & Grove of Titans. Mill Creek Trails & Grove of Titans was the best experience of the the trip as he walked and hiked through through the Trails surrounded by the dense forest all around us. The entire area was a beautiful site as we got to experience all of the enormous Giant Redwoods all around us. And the Grove of Giants was an absolute sight to see. Overall: Definitely a must see when in the local area, to experience an amazingly preserved part of California's coast and forest beauty.

In fact, you may not even realize you're on a bridge until you see the 'Oregon's tallest bridge" sign. This bridge lacks the fancy top, and it's a little devoid in interesting architecture. The Patterson Bridge carries U.S. Route 101 across the Rogue River, near the point where the river empties into the Pacific Ocean, and connects the towns of Gold Beach and Wedderburn. Driving along Highway 101 between Medford and Grant's Pass, it is difficult not to cast an admiring glance towards the majestic bridge build in 1932 and incorporating a strong Art Deco influence. Park at the Port of Gold Beach near the Mary D. Hume shipwreck & walk the path along the river's edge. This will give you a great vantage point of the bridge and good camera angles too. Here you can drink in the beauty of the bridge up close and see swallows building their nests under the bridge; sea lions swimming by; birds diving for fish and salmon fisherman hoping to get lucky. Due to the elements, the Rogue River Bridge has required much preventive maintenance. The bridge needs consistent mitigation due to deterioration from the location's salt air. A $20 million rehabilitation ran from 2001 to 2004. A previous project in 1976 mitigated scouring problems at pier 2. Here's hoping this transport's beauty never fades. 5 YELP STARS.

The parking lot is large, with space for plenty of cars and tour buses. There are multiple buildings on the property, with a very large gift shop (ended up buying some souvenirs here, including salt and pepper shakers made from redwood), a shop that sells homemade fudge, and a private shop that sells more high end artistic crafts and artifacts. The restrooms are in a separate building to the side. Today wasn't the right time to take the gondola ride (1,500 foot high over the forest floor) and trail hike ($30 per adult), so will need to try it some other time when we have more time and ability to hike.

My parents met the man who created all of this back in the 70s and always said he was the nicest and most interesting man. I think his family still owns and runs it. It's outside of Gold Beach so we hit it up anytime we're doing the PNW area. It's very affordable and kids find it magical. The parking is ample and the bathrooms are clean. The gift shop is really fun- esp when my son was younger and going through a years-long dinosaur obsession. My grown daughter, the kids dad and I all still think it's amazing. It's a really chill, nice place to stop. The person working is always really nice and they give you a fun map to walk around with.
