I was going to write a good review for this place after our initial experience, however then I noticed that they charged our credit card twice for MORE than the two receipts showed. Illegal. When I called to have this corrected, the "manager" Alberto disconnected 5 times, each time blaming his phone! He did call me back a 6th time but wanted not just every detail for each receipt but also said I had to RETURN TO THE LOCATION to have this corrected. Taco Tuesday $1.99/per taco! I came here to get some tacos on Tuesday and was pleased with my order. They never disappoint and I've been here several times now in the past years! They provide great service especially the drive-thru service and they don't skimp on salsa, even the pickled vegetables they give you. The only thing I'd like to ask them is to lessen the strong cleaning supply smell- I smelled it mostly on the pickled vegetables. The chicken was ok but had an orange looking color to it. This summer and fall I decided to partake in California Burrito's Taco Tuesday offerings as it was convenient for me to stop in at this location. With the experience shared in my last review, I paid cash. No mess-ups there. And the indoor dining is open (unsure when they reopened it but for a long time during rona you could only order at the outside window and no salsa bar). The food was solid. The chip, salsa and condiment bar was back open after rona. I love that you can grab a flap top baggie to grab your pickled zanahorias (carrots), jalapenos and onions and fresh radishes. The white sauce is delicious. The tomatillo sauce is solid. The pico de gallo is a must have. The red sauce is hot. The chips are okay but I'll forego because there isn't any woman alive over age 30 that needs that kind of carbs. The price was still solid at like $2-2.50/each taco. Traditional taqueria taco with 2 corn tortillas, onions and cilantro. Delicious! As always, parking here is tight but normal size vehicles should find a spot to park. I recently got hungry at 2 o'clock in the morning, and wanted to try a different different place than I usually go to. So, I came here. Overall, I was very happy. The person at the drive-through was friendly, and I got my food in a timely manner. I ordered the chicken taquitos, a fish taco, and an order of Carnitas fries. When I got home, I saw that they also gave me a small bag of chips on the side. Crispy, not greasy, very delicious. The Carnitas fries were amazing. A huge order, the Carnitas were tender, and they had such a great flavor. The order also came with guacamole, sour cream, and salsa. They were like nachos, only with fries instead of chips. I also liked the fish taco. it was a very good size. They didn't overdo it with the lettuce, and I liked the tartar sauce. It had a nice tang to it. The fish was not greasy, and it was a very large piece. The taquitos were OK. They tasted like your standard store-bought taquitos, but that must be standard for your drive-through Mexican place. I get the same type elsewhere. Not worth knocking down a star over. I had them with guacamole and cheese, the guacamole was delicious with a very decent sized portion, and the cheese was also a decent sized portion with a great flavor. We had California Burrito catered for Christmas Eve, and it was very good. Super flavorful food, and good value for the money. Got the steak, chicken, rice, refried beans, corn and flour tortillas, and red and green salsa. Was enough food for ~35 people easily with some to spare. Chips left more to be desired and chicken could use a bit more seasoning. Other than that, no complaints! We paid over $40 for two plates and one birria taco from this place. I'll start with the Birria taco. it was mush like it had been cooked hours before it was given to me and just sat there soaking up the juice and the tortilla was so mushy. I couldn't even pick it up. When I opened my box to eat my cheese enchilada and my crispy shredded beef taco, I was disappointed to find that my cheese enchilada was not even cooked and my shredded beef taco was actually a burrito of some sort with dried out beef and raw vegetables in it with no sauce or cheese or anything else. See the attached pictures for this monstrosity of dinner that cost way too much and I wasn't even able to eat. I paid for a combo meal that was $20 they forgot the side of rice I went back and tried to get the side of rice and the woman told me that I have to come back in the morning but unfortunately I wasn't available and she said that that wasn't her problem. I paid for the meal and I only wanted the sides I paid for nothing more but she said I needed to buy some or leave so we left and now they are refusing a refund all together. Weird I have been a customer at this restaurant for many years and the last time I came I ordered a chili relleno plate. I love the chili Rellenos or at least used to chili relleno was fine but the beans were bad when I called to let them know their beans were bad, the person denied that I was ever there. She didn't believe that I had been there. She said I don't remember you coming in. She said " I'm going to have to look at camera footage". It was a very bizarre experience. The end of a long work day calls for picking up dinner instead of cooking. Lol, I driven past this little shack for several weeks now and have become very curious. Especially since it's down the street from Adalberto's. I thought I'd give them a try, but that was my mistake. The burritos are smaller in comparison to Adalberto's. I had their super carne asada burrito, which came with all the fixings; rice, refried beans, meat, guac, cheese and pico. The carne asada was super dry. If it weren't for the huge amount of refried beans I probably would've choked at some point. Which brings another point, waaaay too many beans. I felt like I was eating a bean burrito with guac honestly. My boyfriend had the California burrito and he stated that the meat was also dry. I asked for lots of their spiciest salsa and was given 4 small cups. I'm not sure if I was actually handed the spiciest salsa because it was mild at the most and super liquify. Well, I don't like giving places 1 star ratings, but without exaggeration, this was the worst burrito I've ever had. I was driving to work when I made a spontaneous decision to stop and grab a burrito. I've passed California Burrito many times over the years, and figured this would be the day to finally try it. My receipt says this was at 5:09PM on 4/18/23. I pulled up to the speaker and ordered a "Super Burrito with Everything" and a side of rice. This cost me $16.65 after taxes. It took a few minutes and then I was handed my bag of food and told to have a good one. Cool, no problems so far. I pulled into the parking lot of my work and was ready to eat this food before clocking in. I quickly realized that I wasn't handed any salsas, napkins, or a fork. Usually most places that have a drive-thru have napkins they give. No worries, I keep extras in my car. I wasn't handed a fork for the rice, but no worries I keep extras in my car. I wasn't given any salsas, like most places offer, but unfortunately I don't keep salsa in my car. Maybe I had to ask for all of these myself? Oh well, salsas aren't necessary when the food is already good. This was not the case however. Starting with the rice, it was horrible. I took a couple bites before I realized I was going to have to throw it away. It had no flavor except for what tasted like chemicals. I threw it away. Moving on to the super burrito with everything. It consists of a choice of meat, rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese. I took a bite and got a mouth full of beans and tortilla. This was one of the worst rolled burritos I've ever had. The entire top half was only beans. The bottom half was rice, sour cream, chicken, and cheese. They forgot to add the guacamole which comes on it. I know this because I unrolled my burrito to make sure it wasn't entirely beans. The beans part was ok, but the bottom half of the burrito with the rice, sour cream, chicken and cheese was nasty. It had that same chemical-tasting rice, and very sour cream. I know that it's supposed to be a bit sour, as it's in the name, but I think it was out for too long and started to turn? It tasted like that type of sour. The chicken tasted like it was fine, but the rice and sour cream made in impossible to truly tell. I threw it away. I spent over $16 on food I had to throw away. I hate wasting food and usually will eat my meals even if I don't like it, because I don't want to waste the food and money spent. I've never thrown away a burrito due to it's taste before. Their juice is completely fresh and so good! I've had the pineapple and orange, but they also have beet, carrot, and cucumber juice that I haven't tried yet. Today I dined in with my boyfriend and toddler and tried their Horchata for the first time and it was beyond amazing, very creamy like a dessert and perfect amount of cinnamon mm! My toddler had some too and wanted to steal it all ha ha! On Wednesdays they have a $5.00 California Burrito special we took advantage of, I split mine with my toddler since they're huge and we both thought it tasted fine, other than next time I'll see if they can substitute for pork instead, since the steak wasn't as flavorful today. I liked the avocado salsa from their free chips and salsa bar they offer inside and it tasted yummy with my burrito! The chips are fresh as well and have a nice crunch to them! The whole restaurant was decorated for December, it felt very Christmasy, I loved it from the decked out tree, tinsel, amazing painted windows and cheery attitudes from the staff! I would recommend trying out this restaurant, they have a diverse menu from breakfast, lunch to dinner and you'll leaved full and happy! For people that travel up and down Fair Oaks Blvd. & Manzanita Ave. in the Carmichael area, this place is not easy to miss at all. Reason being is because it is a tiny restaurant that is smack dab in the middle of a busy intersection. They are however, conveniently open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This place is none other than "California Burrito". I have been here on a few occasions but only through their drive-thru (which is recommended). On the evening when my lady and I came, we decided to dine-in. Keep in mind that this place has VERY limited parking outside; only 3-4 parking spots if that. And if all the spots are filled up, you may have to park across the street where Rite Aid & Safeway are located. Fortunately we were able to park in the one and only available space. They do offer limited seating on the outside with just a few tables on the inside. You will also find a nice little salsa bar complete with piping hot tortilla chips and other condiments to complete your experience. One nice thing that California Burrito offers are their daily specials. This includes $1.25 "Crispy Tacos" (on Sunday), $7.99 "Wet Burritos" (on Monday), $1.50 "Mini Street Tacos" (on Tuesday), and $5.00 "California Burritos" (on Wednesday). Since we came on a Wednesday evening, we decided on splitting the California Burrito while sharing a side of beans as well as complimentary chips & salsa and an iced cold Horchata beverage to drink. Considering how busy the drive-thru was outside, we still received all of food in less than five minutes on the inside. The burrito itself was much like what you'll get at other Mexican establishments in this price range; seasoned meat, potatoes, and cheese. The beans though were absolutely delicious; salty and creamy with the 3-cheese blend sprinkled on top. Overall, "California Burrito" was a decent above average Mexican restaurant. Very decent prices and excellent customer service as the manager let us have a refill of Horchata for free. And if you decide on eating your food at 3pm or 3am, they will always be open day or night! I generally really like this spot. The service is excellent and I have only had great food experiences at this location. When it is open it is better than just drive thru. Chips, salsa, napkins, all make inside better. I've noticed prices pushing up because of Covid but now I feel it has pushed past the Covid excuse. I just had a Chicken Fajita burrito and it is just chicken and peppers. If you want to add anything else it adds to the price. Without the credit card fee it would have been $12.12. It is a solid burrito but for $12 with a drink it should be awesome! This Resturant is in an awkward location and parking can be a challenge. It would be best to drive thru and take food home. They have indoor seating and outdoor sitting as well. We had the beef taco with a cheese enchilada and rice and beans. The cheese on the inside of the enchilada was not even hot... But the rice and beans were very warm very good. The beef taco was pretty good for a Mexican restaurant. They have a salsa bar where you can choose your sauces and put them on your food and free chips. I've been having Mexican Food cravings lately (I blame the hormones). I ordered the Shrimp Super Burrito. It was pretty good, and it was huge! Definitely cheaper than Chipotle. I wish it had a little more sauce that came with it, because I like my food with more flavor. My breakfast chorizo burrito was very bland. Did they forget that Mexican food is supposed to have flavor? I could have fixed that, if they didn't try to pass off watery hot sauce as salsa. You can see in older photos, that they had thick salsa. Now it's almost entirely liquid and they give you tiny cups of it. I placed an order for the aforementioned grilled chicken salad minus the cheese and a half pint of pico de gallo. The beans sounded good too so I also added a half pint of pinto beans without cheese. My total was 10.79. They also included heavy duty plasticwear, green salsa upon request and a 2 little dressings for the salad. Way more consistent than any other drive thru Mexican food place in the area. (that includes the local chain that starts with 'A') Food is hot, tasty, and made perfect everytime. Today's experience though was 5+ stars so I had to leave a review. I got the chili Relleno burrito, add potatoes. My wife got the steak & egg breakfast burrito. My son got the carne asada quesadilla with a small side of the Birria consumé for dipping. It was all so delicious! Potatoes in my burrito were fried to a lightly crisp golden brown, chili relleno was cooked perfectly (so cheesy), the spicy enchilada sauce ties it all together. This is the only local place that makes basic yummy refried beans and rice. A lot of places around me can't even get beans and rice right so this is a big deal for a rice lover. I don't know where the weak reviews come from but my guess it's the ones that lack pigment. read more
