Ferry (you can drive your car) I considered taking the bullet train but you must plan this well in advance or pull pay a lot per person. The train can get you from Lille, France to Kings Cross, London in 90 minutes!! King's Cross is also home to platform 9 3/4 for you Harry Potter fans. The ferry takes 2.5hrs but you also have to arrive 1hr before departure. This was the cheapest method. Le Shuttle was the next best option for me! I'm glad I took this route crossing the English Channel because it was VERY unique and the cheapest and fastest! PROCESS: Buy your ticket online, select your vehicle type, arrive to the port at your scheduled time. Before you enter the tunnel there's a small area with restaurants and bathrooms. You enter like you're going through a toll booth. Enter your reservation code and the machine prints out a tag to hang on your mirror there's plenty of employees to direct you to the right area. Then there's a small wait to board the train cart. YES, you drive yourself into a Train. Once inside, someone is guiding you where to stop. When you're parked an announcement comes on and gives you all the instructions you need. The train (with you sitting in your car) goes underwater. 35 minutes later you're across the English Channel!! Super fast and easy! NOTE: There is a passport check on both sides for France and the UK before you board the train cart.

For me the romance of the train was still there, I liked waking up in the morning to such changed scenery and found sleeping on the couchette fairly comfortable. There's still a bit of adventure to traveling this way compared to flying. But it is not a cheap option and only viable if there are several people and you will need a car for quite a while as it's around 500 or so each way. The terminal at Calais was hard to find. Disappointingly there was no dining car so we bought the picnic bags from the station which sounded a nice idea but the food was horrible, so be prepared and bring food along. We wished we'd realised beforehand that the top box would have to be removed-we'd have packed it better, all the stuff had to be dumped into the car and then put back at the other end. I would use the motorail again if the occasion was right but the high cost is an issue.

The boat's themselves are very nice but we found the on board entertainment is lacking somewhat. We also found the food to be overpriced and quite inedible. However they do occasionally do cheap crossings and these can work out very good value for money, especially if you are holidaying in France.

The ferries are fairly luxurious with plenty of room to move around. The facilities on board are good, and not ridiculously over priced if you choose carefully, although i did get caught out with £1.60 for a bottle of coke.. The toilets on board were remarkably clean, but ladies take your own loo roll! There is an on-board shop and and money exchange but the rates aren't that great unless you are desperate to get your money back into sterling. If you sign up to the seafrance email, they send you special offer discounts where you can make really good savings on short breaks including offers like free nights or 50% off hotels.

But I simply cannot believe what happened to an entire busload of ferry passengers the other evening. After the last ferry with walk-on arrived late--past the shuttle's end time of 1900-the company simply dropped us at the terminal at Calais. There were no taxis running, no Uber and no shuttle. Nearly three dozen passengers were stuck at the terminal with no way to get into town and the P&O staff was utterly indifferent to the fact that included elderly people and children, all with large bags from their travels. Eventually, we all had to walk the two miles to the train station in what was still a very hot day during the heat wave. I love France and feel the reputation of its people as being rude or standoffish is way off the mark, but the people of P&O were some of the most thoughtless, uncaring employees I've ever had the misfortune of encountering.
